Sylvania pulled the laptop back onto her lap and leaned in. Her eyes narrowed as she returned to what she had been searching before; the Business Gala guest list. She scrolled past a few names, most of them familiar to anyone who had ever followed New Haven’s business world.

But then one name made her pause.

Anna Holland.

Her eyes widened just a little, it wasn’t just a name; it was the city’s most respected female mogul when it came to business.

She clicked on it, and a long profile opened. There was a photo that showed a tall woman in a cream jacket. Her arms were crossed, and she stood in front of a glass tower. She looked proud, and her lips were curved in a small smile, the kind that said “I built this.”

Sylvania scrolled further and the profile stretched.

Russell felt like he had stopped breathing. “What?”Charlotte raised an eyebrow, and she sounded serious. “You’re already replacing her? And it has only been weeks, you brought in another one?”“It’s not what you think,” Russell said quickly, taking a step forward. “Charlotte, listen…this isn’t what it looks like.”Charlotte shook her head, blinking severe, trying to hold back her tears. “She’s out there somewhere, probably crying her heart out. And you… you’re here laughing with another woman?”Russell ran a hand down his face. “Natasha is just helping me. That’s all.”Natasha stayed quiet, and she lowered her eyes as she felt uncomfortable.Charlotte looked at Natasha, then back at Russell. “You don’t get it, do you?” she said, her voice trembled a little. “Sylvania didn’t leave because she was weak. She left because she was tired.”Russell looked away. For a moment, the room was silent. Then Charlotte picked up her bag from the coffee table. “I’ll leave you two to your brainstormin

She stepped aside and held the door open.“Please, come in,” she said quietly.Officers Wallen and Mathews walked in, their boots padded softly against the floor. She led them to the small living room, where a soft cream couch and two wooden chairs made up a welcoming sitting area. The room smelled like lavender, and on the wall were framed photos of Sylvania and Coco.“Would you like some water?” Sylvania offered, trying to keep her voice calm.“Yes, thank you,” Officer Wallen replied, giving her a polite nod.She disappeared into the kitchen and returned with two clear glasses of cold water, placing them on the small coffee table. Then she sat across from them, her hands resting on her lap.The younger officer, Mathews, cleared his throat and looked at her gently.“Miss Scarlet,” he began, “we understand that your leaving home isn’t really our business… but your husband filed a missing person report last week. He seemed worried.”Sylvania looked down for a moment, her fingers gently

The next morning, sunlight filtered through the soft white curtains in Charlotte’s room. It was a very quiet morning, with only the sound of birds chirping outside, and a light wind that entered through the open window. Charlotte’s eyes fluttered open, and for the first time in weeks, she woke up smiling. She stretched, yawned, and tossed her blanket aside with a tired sigh. She pulled on a simple blue dress and slipped her feet into white flats. As she walked out of her room, she began humming a happy little tune, one she’d made up herself. Her steps were light, almost like she was floating. In the kitchen, Monica, her mother, was standing at the counter peeling sweet potatoes. The pot on the stove let out soft bubbles, and the smell of fresh garlic filled the air. She glanced over her shoulder and raised her eyebrows, watching her daughter move across the room with unusual happiness.“Well, someone woke up on the right side of the bed,” Monica said, wiping her hands on a kitchen tow

Then she said softly, “No… she hasn’t come in for the past days.”Russell’s heart skipped a beat as he stared at her.Tashil leaned back in her seat, her fingers brushing over a folder on her desk. “She didn’t come in today,” she said, then paused. “Actually… I let her go. Three days ago.”Russell wrinkled his forehead. “You fired her?”Tashil nodded, she looked calm, but only her eyes could tell that she was serious as she didn’t blink. “Yes. She was falling behind, and she couldn’t deliver tasks on time. She was always… complaining. Saying she was going through things I couldn’t quite understand.” She gave a little shrug, as if trying to sound like she cared, but her voice said it all, she wasn’t someone to mess with.Russell’s face was now serious. “She never told me,” he said quietly. “She didn’t say a word to me about being fired.”Tashil sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think she would just walk away without saying anything. We had the Modern Elegance Fashion Show coming up tomorrow

The five city council officials sat straight in their chairs. The woman who had spoken earlier, the one with a serious face, placed a thin folder on the glass table.“We’re here on behalf of the City Financial & Oversight Committee,” she said. “My name is Rebecca Haines, and these are my colleagues, Mr. Lindell, Ms. Margo, Mr. Dean, and Mr. Sydney. We have some questions regarding your companies, Mr. Amaro.”Nicholas forced a polite smile. “Of course. Please, ask whatever you need.”Rebecca opened the folder. “Starting with Amaro Construction, the company received city contracts worth over four million last year. Yet your quarterly reports show suspicious delays, unfinished projects, and untraceable subcontractors.”Nicholas’s fingers tightened around the arm of his chair. “We had delays because of supply issues…steel shortages and the like.”Ms. Margo cut in, flipping to another page. “Then there’s Amaro Logistics. You claimed 18 delivery trucks. We traced only six in working order.
