Mabella's POV

"Lock the door."

His footsteps were already fading before the click finished.

I stood in the middle of the room and Dera appeared from the inner doorway, her face asking the question her mouth wasn't.

"Nobody opens that door except Fred or the Alpha," I replied.

She nodded and sat and that was that.

I sat back at the table.

Nathan.

I kept turning the name over. Not because I doubted it but because I was trying to trace it backward through everything I'd witnessed and find where he

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   They Chose the Wrong Girl to Fear

Mabella's POV"He's in the east guest quarters."Fred said it quietly from the doorway of the war room where Alfredo had spread Rosalind's journal across the table and was going through it page by page with the focused stillness of a man who needed to do something with his hands while his head caught up with everything the night had given him.I was beside him, reading over his shoulder, and every page was worse than the last in the particular way that things are worse when they confirm what you already knew but hadn't yet seen written down by someone who was there."East guest quarters," Alfredo said without looking up. "Why is he in the guest quarters and not his usual rooms?""He moved six months ago," Fred said. "Said his usual rooms were too far from the healer's supply corridor. Said it at his age the distance was inconvenient." A pause. "The east guest quarters are directly above the passage that connects to the Luna quarters."Alfredo looked up from the journal.Fred looked ba

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Man Who Kept Her Sleeping

Alfredo's POV"She's asleep."Fred said it low and I checked the mirror. Rosalind had her head against the window, hands folded in her lap, the twenty years of waiting finally finished with her for the night.Mabella was in the front with the journal and she hadn't opened it once since we left the house. Just kept her fingers on the cover like she was checking it was still there."You know you can read it," I told her."I know." She looked down at it. "I just keep thinking what if I open it and something's missing. What if twenty years of her keeping this thing safe and hiding and waiting and it's still not enough." She shook her head slightly. "Stupid.""Not stupid," I said."A little stupid," she said."Maybe a little," I said. She almost smiled.Annabella was in the second vehicle behind us. She'd tried to get into ours and Fred had looked at her with a particular expression and she'd gotten into the second one without further discussion and I had stayed completely out of it becaus

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Heir They Could Never Break

Mabella's POV"Tell me what the Ashborne line actually means for me right now," I said before Rosalind had even fully sat down. "Not the history. What does it means today."Rosalind looked at me across the table."It means every healer who examined you was looking in the wrong place," she said. "They were treating you like a standard she-wolf with an unusual condition." A pause. "You are not a standard she-wolf.""Then what am I," I said."The Ashborne bloodline produces wolves larger, stronger, and more instinctively dominant than any standard Alpha line," Rosalind said. "It has been dormant for three generations. Your mother was the last carrier and she didn't manifest fully because the line skips." She held my gaze. "It doesn't skip in you."Annabella was very still across the table.Alfredo beside me hadn't moved."My mother knew this," I said slowly."She came to me six months before she died," Rosalind told me. "She had been feeling it for years. The pull in her blood. The knowl

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Bloodline They Tried to Bury

Alfredo's POV"Three hours outside the territory and she went alone."Fred didn't answer that. There wasn't much to add.Mabella was quiet in the back with the paper in her lap. I could see her face in the side mirror when the road lights caught it. Not scared. Just somewhere inside herself, turning something over.I left her to it."She planned it," Mabella murmured eventually. Not really to us. "The timing, the note, making sure Dera would pass it on. She didn't just bolt." A pause. "Annabella doesn't do anything without thinking it through first.""Doesn't make it less reckless," Fred muttered."No," Mabella agreed. "But it makes it deliberate. There's a difference.""Is there," Fred said, not quite a question."Yes," Mabella told him. "Reckless is not caring about the consequences. Deliberate means you weighed them and decided anyway." A pause. "She decided this mattered more than the risk. That's not reckless. That's just a decision I didn't get to be part of."Fred was quiet aft

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   Seven Years of Secrets

Mabella's POV"Put it down, Dera. And tell me who sent you."She stood there two seconds too long with the cup in her hands. That was enough. The Dera I trusted would have reacted. Would have asked what I meant. Would have done something human with her face. Instead, she set the cup down on the table and turned and the expression I had trusted every single morning just quietly wasn't there anymore."How long have you known?" she asked.Damage assessment. That was all it was."Long enough," I replied. "Who sent you?""Sit down, Mabella.""I'll stand." I held her gaze. "Who sent you?"Her eyes moved to the door behind me and back."Four men in the corridor," I replied. "Alpha is directly outside. Whatever you're thinking, stop."She let out a slow breath through her nose."I wasn't calculating an exit," she replied. "I was deciding how much to tell you.""Everything," I replied. "Name first."A long moment passed between us."Elmira," she replied.I stared at her."Elmira," I said."Yes

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Third Name

Mabella's POV"She is not who you think."I read it again standing in the corridor with Alfredo beside me and the palace alert and awake around Dera and us still in the doorway with her pale face and her folded hands.Six words. From Annabella.Who was gone."She," Alfredo replied quietly, reading over my shoulder. "Not him.""She," I replied. We looked at each other."Phebian is detained," I replied slowly. "Lily is in custody. Every woman on the Rogue King's list is accounted for.""Which means Annabella is pointing at someone not on the list," Alfredo replied."Someone close enough to me that she thought I needed a warning," I replied. "Someone I would never think to look at."The corridor was very quiet around us.I looked down at the paper again.Annabella's handwriting. My name. Not Luna. Not a title. Just Mabella, the way she'd written it on birthday cards when we were children before everything between us curdled into something unrecognizable. She hadn't written this to hurt m

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Beta Who Built the Betrayal

Alfredo's POV"Come in."My voice came out rough with sleep and I was already sitting up before the door finished opening, the instinct of the last seventy two hours not yet convinced that quiet meant safe.Fred stood in the doorway. He looked at me, then at Mabella still asleep beside me, then bac

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Wolf They Couldn’t Silence

Mabella's POV"He kept his word."Dera set a fresh cup of tea on the table beside me and stepped back quietly, the way she always did when she could tell I was thinking.I was thinking. The sentencing hearing was in two days. The Rogue King was in the east holding room giving Fred everything he had

  • FAT GIRLS can’t be LUNA   The Night I Became the Trap

Alfredo's POV"How long have you known?"My voice came out quieter than I intended and Fred straightened slightly in the corridor, the piece of paper still in his hand."An hour," Fred replied. "One of the perimeter scouts flagged an unfamiliar scent near the south wall. We ran it against our rogue

Mabella's POV"She's here."Fred's voice came through the door quiet and I set down the cup of water I'd been holding for ten minutes without drinking and stood up.Alfredo was watching me from across the room."You don't have to do this tonight," he replied."Yes I do," I replied. He looked at me
