Celine’s pov.

The moon was full again. I could see it from the wide windows of Kaine’s bedroom, its pale light casting silver shadows across the floor. The villa was quiet, hushed in that way the world gets when everything important is happening inside your chest instead of around you.

I was curled up on the couch, knees drawn to my chest. My body had healed, the bruises and cuts long gone, but the ache inside me still hadn’t settled.

I heard the soft tread of Kaine’s boots before I saw him. He entered the room without a word, eyes finding mine immediately. And just like that, my chest felt too full again. I hadn’t seen him since earlier in the garden. Since he’d said he would send for my mother. Since he’d looked at me like I was something ancient and breakable and terrifying, but still his.

He didn’t ask if I was okay. He just walked over and sat beside me, close enough that our shoulders brushed. His warmth settled over me like a second skin.

Celine’s pov. The gates of the villa whispered shut behind us as Kaine took my hand. His grip was firm but gentle, thumb brushing over my knuckles like he could sense the nervous energy building inside me. I glanced up at him as we walked, the fading sunlight casting golden slants across his face. He hadn’t said much since we left the villa. He didn’t have to.I already knew who we were going to see. My heart beat faster with every step. The thought of seeing her again…my mother, after everything that had happened, after disappearing without warning, after being swallowed by pain and darkness and magic I still didn’t understand… it made my throat tighten. When we reached the small stone guesthouse tucked behind a line of old pine trees, Kaine finally stopped. He turned toward me, gaze soft but steady. “She’s inside,” he said. “I’ll wait out here. Take all the time you need.”I stared at him for a moment, unsure of what to say. His eyes searched mine like he was trying to reassure me,

Kaine’s pov. It was almost too easy. That was the thought that circled my mind as I leaned against the window in my study, watching the flicker of torches in the distant courtyard where my guards rotated shifts. The air outside was quiet, still, and cold. But inside me, everything was moving fast and calculated, like it always was when I decided to act. When I gave the order to retrieve her mother, there had been no hesitation. No long deliberations. I didn’t ask for permission, and I didn’t extend a courtesy to the Emerald Forest pack. They didn’t need to know, not yet. What mattered was Celine. And Celine needed her mother.I’d sent two of my best wolves trained not just for combat but for quiet, unseen movement. Men who didn’t speak unless it was necessary. Men who didn’t leave a trace when they crossed into enemy or neutral territory. They were the kind of wolves you used when you needed something done quickly, cleanly, and without the godsdamn Council breathing down your neck.T

Celine’s pov. I wandered outside after breakfast, barefoot on the dewy grass. The grounds were quiet, except for birdsong and the distant rustle of leaves. I spun slowly in place, face tilted toward the sun, arms out like a child pretending to fly. Then I lay down on the grass. Just lay there, arms spread, heart open, staring up at the clouds drifting lazily above.“Kaine,” I whispered, though I knew he couldn’t hear me. “Come back soon.”I missed his touch. His grumpy little remarks. The way he looked at me like I was both a miracle and a mystery. The way he stood too close when he didn’t need to. The way he smelled, like cedar and danger and comfort.I missed… him.I spent the rest of the day like that—drifting, humming, glowing. I read a little, walked the garden paths, braided wildflowers into my hair. I talked to the caretakers and helped Nora fold laundry. I danced in the hallway when no one was looking. I snuck an extra pastry when the kitchen staff turned their backs. And all

Celine’s pov. The first thing I felt was warmth. Not the kind that clings to your skin from the heat of the sun or the comfort of thick blankets, but something deeper. A hum in my chest, a buzz beneath my skin, a soft, invisible thread tugging me gently back to the waking world. Then came the sting. A small one. Sharp at first, but fading into a dull thrum as I blinked my eyes open, the morning light casting soft golden rays across the ceiling. I shifted slowly beneath the sheets, and when I raised a hand to my neck, my fingertips brushed over tender skin…warm, slightly swollen.A mark! Not just any mark. His.Memories flooded in…vivid, breathtaking. His mouth on mine. His voice, low and raw, whispering that I was his mate. That he had chosen me. That I belonged to him, just as he belonged to me.And then… the moment. That singular, soul-deep moment where he’d claimed me in the oldest, most sacred way. His teeth at my neck, my body arching to meet him, our souls locking into somethin

Kaine’s pov. I wasn’t sure when I’d fallen asleep, but when I opened my eyes and the world was still dim and quiet, I knew two things for certain.First, Celine was still asleep, breathing slow and even, one leg draped across mine like she had no intention of letting go. Her bare skin was warm against me, a soft contrast to the cool morning air creeping in through the open balcony doors.Second, I’d actually said all of it. Everything! I’d told her she was my mate. Told her I wanted her as my queen. Hell, I’d begged her with my hands and mouth and every inch of my soul to believe in what we had.I turned my head slightly, just enough to look at her.Her lashes fluttered ever so faintly against her cheek, lips parted just a bit as she slept, her face blissfully unguarded. She looked peaceful for the first time in days. Maybe weeks. She’d been through hell. And I’d been helpless for too much of it.My eyes suddenly fell on her neck. There was a mark. A mark! Of course, I had claimed he

Kaine’s pov. Celine was asleep when I slipped out again. She looked peaceful, tucked beneath the blankets, her breathing slow and even. But peace was a lie. I knew the truth behind that calm, saw the flickers in her eyes, the hesitations in her voice, the way she’d watched the rose wither in her hand like she had willed it.She was trying not to be afraid. But I was. Not of her, but for her. There were old things in this world. Buried things. Magic wolves weren’t meant to touch. And somehow, they were waking inside her.The stone circle stood at the northern ridge of the territory, hidden among thick trees and jagged rocks. No wolf dared hunt near it. It had always been an eerie place, forgotten and avoided. Now I knew why. The stones themselves were enormous, each one twice the height of a man, weather-worn and blackened in places. Moss clung to their bases. Strange symbols had been carved into their surfaces, faded but not gone.Oscar followed behind me in silence. Even he didn’t t

Celine’s pov. The next morning, I woke with earth beneath my fingernails. I stared at my hands for a long time, lying in bed with sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains. The dirt was under my nails, caked into the creases of my palms. My knuckles were slightly bruised.I didn’t remember leaving the villa. Not again. I sat up slowly, pressing my hand to my temple. There was no pain. No headache or dizziness. I was alert, sharp, and fully rested. But the evidence was there. I’d gone back to the forest. Again. But why couldn’t I remember it? There was something unnatural in that forgetting. Like a dream pulled down into deep water.I swung my legs out of bed and walked barefoot across the wooden floor to the window. The morning was bright. Birds chattered in the distance. The guards below were in their usual positions, nothing seemed wrong. The world went on, as if nothing inside me was bending.By afternoon, I couldn’t sit still. I walked through every hallway in the villa. I ci

Celine’s pov. It started as a hum.Barely there at first…like the echo of a sound I couldn’t quite hear. I thought it was in my head, a residue of the nightmare Tess had wrapped around me like a shroud. But the more I ignored it, the stronger it became.A whisper beneath my skin. A ripple in my chest. Like a heartbeat that didn’t belong to me. By the fifth day in the villa, I couldn’t pretend it wasn’t real. I stood barefoot on the cool stone of the garden path, surrounded by the scent of roses and morning dew. The sun hadn’t fully risen yet, but the sky was blushing at the edges. Pale pink, gold-streaked.And still, I felt it. The hum was inside me. Constant. Gentle. But growing bolder. I pressed my hand against the center of my chest, just above where my ribs met, and closed my eyes. Nothing physically wrong, no pain, no wound, no fever. But something was… different. Something was awake.I opened my eyes and exhaled slowly. The steam from my breath curled like smoke into the dawn a
