LOGINAMARA’S POV
After work, I dragged myself into my car, completely exhausted. I started the engine and let out a small breath of relief, just a short drive home, I told myself. Then I could rest. A few minutes into the drive, the engine coughed once. Then again.
And then it died completely. I tried starting it again, but nothing. The headlights flickered weakly and then dimmed until the whole road ahead disappeared into darkness. I looked around. Tall trees surrounded both sides of the road. The forest felt darker than usual, too still, too cold. As I stepped out, a strange feeling crawled up my spine. The hairs on my arms stood up. I kept glancing over my shoulder even though I couldn’t explain why. I tried to breathe normally, but each breath felt tight. Something wasn’t right. I could feel it deep inside my chest.
My steps slowed as I walked deeper along the path. The last bit of sky behind the tall branches faded, leaving everything dim. I kept telling myself I just needed to reach the main road. Just a little more. Just a few more minutes. Then I heard it. A low growl, deep, rough and too close.
I froze.
At first, I tried to convince myself it was just the wind or a falling branch. But then it came again, louder this time, shaking the air around me. My heart jumped so hard I felt it in my throat.
My fingers trembled as I slowly turned my head. I didn’t see anything… But I felt it, something was watching me. Heavy, Dark, Waiting.
My mouth went dry. My breath turned shaky. I stepped backwards, careful not to make sudden movements. My pulse hammered so loudly I could barely hear anything else. And then everything happened at once.
A massive dark shape dashed out of the bushes behind me. Before I could run or even scream, the creature slammed into me with full force. I hit the ground so hard that all the air was knocked out of my lungs. Pain shot up my chest. The wolf’s claws dug into my back. Sharp, brutal. I felt my clothes tear and then my skin. The burning pain made my eyes water instantly. I tried to speak, please but nothing came out.
Its heavy weight pressed me down until it felt like my ribs were going to snap. I pushed against the ground, dragging myself forward inch by inch, but it was useless. It was too strong. Its claws raked down my arm, deep and merciless. I cried out as the pain shot through my shoulder. Warm blood ran down my arm, thick and terrifying.
Before I could even breathe, the wolf bit into the back of my jacket, lifted me like I weighed nothing, and threw me. I flew for a second, then crashed into a tree. My back hit the trunk with a loud crack. Every bone inside me screamed. I slid down to the ground, choking on air, vision blurring. My ribs hurt. My shoulder burned. My arm throbbed. Everything felt like fire. I tried moving my leg but nothing, it trembled and refused to hold me. Even lifting my head sent sparks of pain through my skull.
The wolf stepped closer, claws scraping the ground, growling rumbling deep. Its eyes glowed. It wanted to finish me. Tears filled my eyes not because I was weak, but because the pain was too much and there was nowhere left to go.
I pressed my back against the tree, trying to make myself small, and my fingers dug into the dirt. My heartbeat raced uncontrollably, and every breath hurt.
The wolf jumped and then, something hit it from the side, a dark blur, Fast, Violent, Strong. I blinked, trying to clear my cloudy vision. The pain made it hard to focus. But I could see two shapes fighting across the forest floor, slamming into trees, tearing up the ground.
Someone, something had appeared out of nowhere and attacked the wolf with unbelievable strength. For a second, I thought it was another wolf. But then I noticed the way it moved. The way it fought.
He was fighting for me.
The wolf snapped its teeth, but he blocked every attempt, pushing it back again and again. It lasted seconds but to me it felt like forever.
Then the wolf backed away and disappeared into the shadows.
Silence fell.
My whole body shook, and my breathing came in sharp gasps. I couldn’t lift myself; everything hurt too much. He turned toward me slowly, his steps were soft… careful. As if he knew I was scared and hurting. He stopped right in front of me, lowering himself so he wouldn’t tower over me. I stared at him, heart racing. I didn’t know who or what he was. But he waited. He didn’t move closer until I relaxed the tiniest bit.
Only then did he lean in.
He tilted his head slightly, studying my face. His eyes weren’t cold. They held something I never expected, concern, worry.
He sniffed the air around my wounds. When I winced, he paused, pulling back a little as if asking silently if it was okay for him to be this close.
I didn’t push him away, he seemed to understand.
He lowered his head to my injured shoulder. I sucked in a breath as his warm tongue touched my torn skin. It stung sharply at first, but then a strange relief washed through me. The pain didn’t vanish but it softened.
He moved to the long cuts on my arm, licking them slowly, carefully, as if he didn’t
want to hurt me any more than I already was.
His warmth steadied me. I didn’t understand why… but my fear slowly eased.
My body still burned. My ribs still ached. My clothes were torn and sticky with blood. But somehow, his touch made me feel less alone, less afraid. When he lifted his head, and our eyes met, I understood one thing clearly: He wasn’t here to hurt me; he had saved me. Later, when the ambulance arrived and I was rushed to the hospital, my friends panicked and asked a thousand questions. Their voices were loud and blurry, but my mind wasn’t with them.
All I could feel was him, still in the shadows, still watching. Close enough to protect me and at that moment, I knew he had been there all along. Even when I didn’t see him, even when I didn’t know his name or had an idea who or what he really was.
KAEL'S POV As soon as I reached the dungeon door, Cassian rushed toward me, only to be yanked back violently by the chains around his ankle. Metal clanged harshly against the stone floor as he stumbled, barely managing to stay upright. Despite his battered appearance, bruises dark across his face, dried blood at the corner of his lip, he still carried that same arrogant, nonchalant attitude that had always irritated me. Let’s see how long he can keep that up. The guards unlocked the gate, and it creaked open slowly. I stepped inside. The air shifted the moment I entered. Tension pressed down heavily, thick enough to suffocate anything weaker. I approached Cassian coldly, my wolf alert and ready to strike at any moment. My aura spread through the room, pressing against the walls like an invisible weight. Cassian felt it too. His body recoiled instinctively, his confidence flickering for just a second before he forced it back into place. I stopped a few steps in front of him
Amara’s POVI walked to the dungeon without slowing. The guards at the entrance straightened the moment they saw me. Shock flashed across their faces before they masked it. They hurried to open the main gate and moved steps ahead of me to lead the way.Halfway down the corridor, I stopped.“Do you know why I’m here?” I asked coldly. They exchanged a glance. “Yes, my queen. Alpha Cassian… and his sister.”“Lead the way.”The air grew heavier as we descended. Torches burned low along the stone walls, their smoke clinging to the ceiling. The corridor smelled of rust, damp earth, and something dead. Other prisoners shifted behind their bars as we passed, but their cells were angled away from the inner chamber. None of them could see into the section we approached. The guards unlocked the final door and stepped in first. I followed.Aurelia looked nothing like the composed woman I remembered. Her hair was mishelved, her face and her clothes creased and stained from days in confinement. But
KAEL’S POVI went to the infirmary to check on Adrian. Two guards stood stationed outside his door, under my orders. No one was to approach without my knowledge. When I reached the entrance, I stopped when I heard a familiar voice.I didn’t enter immediately. I knew Amara was inside.I could hear her clearly, even though I couldn’t see her fully. She was sitting beside Adrian’s bed, and she was apologising. Her voice was low… broken.“It’s my fault,” she whispered. “All of this… is my fault.”Then she sniffed, and everything went silent for a while.I stood there frozen, thinking if going in now was the best move to make. Then I heard more movement. She must have sensed me too.The moment she did, she quickly wiped her face dry, trying to erase evidence of tears that were already there. But I didn’t need to see her face to know.I could feel her emotions.I stepped inside, and her back stiffened instantly. She didn’t turn. I knew she was trying to hold herself together.I closed the d
KAEL'S POV Before dawn, I left the room quietly, careful not to wake her. “Double the guards,” I ordered the moment I stepped out. “No one enters this chamber wing without my permission.” The guards straightened immediately. “Yes, my king,” one of them said, bowing. There shouldn’t be anyone near that part of the castle in the first place. It was reserved—for me… and my mate. As I descended the stairs, I reached out through the mind link. Is everything ready? Liam’s response came almost instantly. Yes. A slow smirk tugged at my lips. Good. Today wouldn’t be like the others. We’ll give them something to remember. There was a brief pause before Liam responded, amusement lacing his tone. I thought you’d say that. Breakfast was already ready when I arrived. The long dining hall was filled with platters of roasted meat, buttered bread, fresh fruits, and goblets of deep red wine. Maids stood at the sides waiting, along with a few guards. I acknowledged greetings with brie
AMARA’S POV I woke slowly, my body heavy and aching, as if every muscle had been wrung dry. The faint scent of herbs lingered in the room, mixed with the scent of something warmer— Kael. My eyes fluttered open to see Priestess Thalia sitting at my bedside, holding a cup in her hands. “Drink this,” she said softly, pressing the cup toward me. “It will help.” I obeyed without hesitation, downing the bitter liquid in a single gulp. The taste made me wince, but the warmth spread through my chest, easing some of the lingering weakness. Thalia’s eyes studied me carefully. “It’s as effective as it is taste,” she remarked. I nodded, the memory of Adrian flashing in my mind. “How is Adrian?” I asked. “Getting better,” Thalia replied. Her calm tone should have reassured me, but my thoughts kept circling back to him. I remained quiet, lost in the swirl of my own fears. My body still felt fragile from the poison last time, and the memory of what I endured lingered like a shadow. Thalia
KAEL’S POV The infirmary reeked of blood and herbs. I stood at the far end of the room, my gaze fixed on Adrian’s pale, trembling form. Each shallow breath seemed heavier than the last, I could feel my chest tighten. The healer approached me cautiously. “My king… we do not understand it,” he said. “There is no visible poison, no fatal wound. Yet… he vomited blood. His body is failing.” My jaw clenched. “You’re telling me you don’t know what’s killing him?” “We are still searching,” the healer replied. “Then keep searching,” I cut in sharply. “Run every test. Use every method. I don’t care what it takes.” My eyes flickered back to Adrian. “And make sure he stabilizes too.” The healer nodded, bowed his head. I turned and walked out. Amara sat in the walkway, shoulders trembling. Her red, swollen eyes lifted to mine as I approached. I took her hand gently. She flinched, startled. Tears fell freely, and I wiped them away without thinking. Her lips moved, but
KAEL’S POVThe next day, I summoned the twenty-four members of the King’s Council.By the time I entered the council hall, they were already waiting. The vast hall fell silent the instant I took my seat at the head of the table. One by one, they bowed. I acknowledged them with a brief nod and waste
AMARA’S POV The sound of sudden movement pulled me from sleep. My eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim lighting of the chamber. Across the room, Kael stood near the wardrobe, fastening the clasps of his dark attire. His movements were precise. But it wasn’t what he was doing that caught my
AMARA’S POV Sunlight brushed my pale face. My eyes flickered open as I stirred beneath the blanket, my body still aching from yesterday’s brutal Arena trial, but my mind refused to rest. Today is the second day of the Luna Trials. Yesterday had tested my strength and endurance; today would test so
AMARA’S POVThe knock came just as the early morning light began filtering through the tall glass windows of my chamber.I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, images of the Arena, the crowd, and the weight of expectations clawed their way back into my thoughts. When the knock came again,
