LOGINAMARA’S POV
After work, I dragged myself into my car, completely exhausted. I started the engine and let out a small breath of relief, just a short drive home, I told myself. Then I could rest. A few minutes into the drive, the engine coughed once. Then again.
And then it died completely. I tried starting it again, but nothing. The headlights flickered weakly and then dimmed until the whole road ahead disappeared into darkness. I looked around. Tall trees surrounded both sides of the road. The forest felt darker than usual, too still, too cold. As I stepped out, a strange feeling crawled up my spine. The hairs on my arms stood up. I kept glancing over my shoulder even though I couldn’t explain why. I tried to breathe normally, but each breath felt tight. Something wasn’t right. I could feel it deep inside my chest.
My steps slowed as I walked deeper along the path. The last bit of sky behind the tall branches faded, leaving everything dim. I kept telling myself I just needed to reach the main road. Just a little more. Just a few more minutes. Then I heard it. A low growl, deep, rough and too close.
I froze.
At first, I tried to convince myself it was just the wind or a falling branch. But then it came again, louder this time, shaking the air around me. My heart jumped so hard I felt it in my throat.
My fingers trembled as I slowly turned my head. I didn’t see anything… But I felt it, something was watching me. Heavy, Dark, Waiting.
My mouth went dry. My breath turned shaky. I stepped backwards, careful not to make sudden movements. My pulse hammered so loudly I could barely hear anything else. And then everything happened at once.
A massive dark shape dashed out of the bushes behind me. Before I could run or even scream, the creature slammed into me with full force. I hit the ground so hard that all the air was knocked out of my lungs. Pain shot up my chest. The wolf’s claws dug into my back. Sharp, brutal. I felt my clothes tear and then my skin. The burning pain made my eyes water instantly. I tried to speak, please but nothing came out.
Its heavy weight pressed me down until it felt like my ribs were going to snap. I pushed against the ground, dragging myself forward inch by inch, but it was useless. It was too strong. Its claws raked down my arm, deep and merciless. I cried out as the pain shot through my shoulder. Warm blood ran down my arm, thick and terrifying.
Before I could even breathe, the wolf bit into the back of my jacket, lifted me like I weighed nothing, and threw me. I flew for a second, then crashed into a tree. My back hit the trunk with a loud crack. Every bone inside me screamed. I slid down to the ground, choking on air, vision blurring. My ribs hurt. My shoulder burned. My arm throbbed. Everything felt like fire. I tried moving my leg but nothing, it trembled and refused to hold me. Even lifting my head sent sparks of pain through my skull.
The wolf stepped closer, claws scraping the ground, growling rumbling deep. Its eyes glowed. It wanted to finish me. Tears filled my eyes not because I was weak, but because the pain was too much and there was nowhere left to go.
I pressed my back against the tree, trying to make myself small, and my fingers dug into the dirt. My heartbeat raced uncontrollably, and every breath hurt.
The wolf jumped and then, something hit it from the side, a dark blur, Fast, Violent, Strong. I blinked, trying to clear my cloudy vision. The pain made it hard to focus. But I could see two shapes fighting across the forest floor, slamming into trees, tearing up the ground.
Someone, something had appeared out of nowhere and attacked the wolf with unbelievable strength. For a second, I thought it was another wolf. But then I noticed the way it moved. The way it fought.
He was fighting for me.
The wolf snapped its teeth, but he blocked every attempt, pushing it back again and again. It lasted seconds but to me it felt like forever.
Then the wolf backed away and disappeared into the shadows.
Silence fell.
My whole body shook, and my breathing came in sharp gasps. I couldn’t lift myself; everything hurt too much. He turned toward me slowly, his steps were soft… careful. As if he knew I was scared and hurting. He stopped right in front of me, lowering himself so he wouldn’t tower over me. I stared at him, heart racing. I didn’t know who or what he was. But he waited. He didn’t move closer until I relaxed the tiniest bit.
Only then did he lean in.
He tilted his head slightly, studying my face. His eyes weren’t cold. They held something I never expected, concern, worry.
He sniffed the air around my wounds. When I winced, he paused, pulling back a little as if asking silently if it was okay for him to be this close.
I didn’t push him away, he seemed to understand.
He lowered his head to my injured shoulder. I sucked in a breath as his warm tongue touched my torn skin. It stung sharply at first, but then a strange relief washed through me. The pain didn’t vanish but it softened.
He moved to the long cuts on my arm, licking them slowly, carefully, as if he didn’t
want to hurt me any more than I already was.
His warmth steadied me. I didn’t understand why… but my fear slowly eased.
My body still burned. My ribs still ached. My clothes were torn and sticky with blood. But somehow, his touch made me feel less alone, less afraid. When he lifted his head, and our eyes met, I understood one thing clearly: He wasn’t here to hurt me; he had saved me. Later, when the ambulance arrived and I was rushed to the hospital, my friends panicked and asked a thousand questions. Their voices were loud and blurry, but my mind wasn’t with them.
All I could feel was him, still in the shadows, still watching. Close enough to protect me and at that moment, I knew he had been there all along. Even when I didn’t see him, even when I didn’t know his name or had an idea who or what he really was.
Amara's POV Darkness swallowed everything. I wasn’t in the wasteland anymore. I was somewhere else. The air was thick with tension. Voices in the distance. Fear. And then, I saw him. A young man, in his early twenties. He looked so familiar. I moved closer, just then, my breath caught. Dad? I yelled, but he didn’t seem to hear or see me. He looked scared. I could see the horror in his eyes. His arms were wrapped tightly around something. A baby. My heart stuttered. The baby was crying weakly, like she was hungry but also scared. Her tiny hands trembled. He tried to comfort her, rocking her back and forth while humming in Druid language. Then suddenly—the crying stopped. My brows furrowed. The baby’s small fingers were in her mouth… Sucking, trying to silence herself. Something about it felt wrong. The more I stared at them, my chest ached for reasons unknown to me. “Take her,” a voice said. I turned. A woman stood a few steps away. She was covered in a hood,
Amara’s POV I didn’t move. Kael’s arms were still wrapped around me, firm and unyielding. But his words kept echoing in my mind—over and over, refusing to fade. Be careful who you trust. There had been something in his voice. Not hesitation. Certainty. My fingers tightened slightly against his shirt. The bond… it meant I could feel whatever emotions he tried to hide. I pulled back just enough to look at him. His expression was calm. Unreadable. But I could feel it. Something beneath the surface. Something he wasn’t saying. I closed my eyes and focused, trying to reach whatever thread of emotion I could find through the bond. At first, there was nothing. Then—it opened. Slowly. Just enough. I felt his wolf holding everything back. A restraint—tight, suffocating, barely containing something dangerous. My breath hitched as I pushed a little further. “Don’t.” The connection snapped instantly. He shut me out. My eyes flew open. The emptin
Amara’s POV I woke up to an empty room. For a moment, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, trying to remember where I was. Then it all came rushing back. Kael. Last night. My breath hitched slightly. I turned my head. He wasn’t there. The space beside me was cold, as though he had been gone for a while. A strange feeling settled in my chest. I tried to sit up, but the moment I moved, a sharp ache spread through my body, forcing a soft gasp out of me. My muscles protested, every inch of me sore in a way that made it impossible to ignore. I shut my eyes briefly. He was a beast… last night. Heat rushed to my cheeks as the memories came flooding back—his touch, his intensity, the way he had completely taken control. I buried my face in the sheets, groaning softly in embarrassment. Why am I thinking about this again? A knock sounded on the door, pulling me out of my thoughts. I quickly pulled the covers over myself. “Come in.” The door opened, and
Amara’s POV My heart raced as I stammered, “I… I was trying to get the Veil history.” The words rushed out before I could stop them. “I’m sorry.” Kael’s eyes locked onto mine, as if he were trying to read every thought I had. For a long moment, neither of us moved. Then, without a word, he released me and turned away. I froze. He didn’t say anything. Did he believe me? My chest tightened. He’ll misunderstand me… I thought, panic rising as I hurried after him. But when I reached the hallway, he was already gone. The guards nearby looked at me with surprise. They hadn’t seen me leave. I lowered my gaze, frustration and defeat settling over me, and quietly returned to my room. As I stepped inside, I bumped my forehead against something hard. “Ouch…” I muttered, rubbing the spot. When I looked up, my breath caught. Kael was standing there. I instinctively stepped back. Was he trying to scare me…? I thought, my pulse quickening. He moved closer. And with each
Amara’s POVKael didn’t return to the room last night. And he had been avoiding me.I spent most of my time in the room prepared for Adrian inside the castle. I didn’t know him well, not really, but I felt guilt whenever I looked at him. Some days, I used my powers, hoping he would wake.Other days, I buried myself in work—anything that had to do with the palace, to keep my mind from wandering. After a long day, I found myself back in his room again.I stood beside his bed, watching him in silence.Still unconscious.“Wake up…” I whispered softly, though I knew he wouldn’t hear me.After a while, I sighed and turned to leave. The moment I opened the door, I stopped.Liam.After days of not seeing either him or Kael, he was the last person I expected to find standing there. He bowed slightly. “My queen.” But I barely heard him.My thoughts were elsewhere.“Where is Kael?” I asked quietly.Liam didn’t answer immediately. His expression looked conflicted, like he was deciding whether or
Kael’s POV I never planned to execute Aurelia. Not yet. But Cassian knew one thing about me, I do not bluff. And I knew him just as well. He would never sit still while his sister rotted in my dungeon. So I waited. It happened that night. By the time the alarm reached me, it was already too late. The guards stationed at the dungeon door were dead. They had come for her, cutting down anyone in their path. They freed Aurelia… and tried to reach Cassian. But I had already moved him. His cell was no longer where they expected, and the new location was heavily guarded. When they saw the cell empty, they chose to escape without him. By the time they reached the outer walls of the castle, we were already waiting. They froze the moment they saw us. My warriors surrounded them from every side. There was no escaping. My gaze swept across them… and then stopped when I saw a familiar figure. At the front stood a woman cloaked in black. I tried to catch her scent, to unveil her iden
AMARA’S POVKael slept for a long time. I didn’t move.I stayed curled beside the stone platform, my fingers still wrapped around his, afraid that if I let go, even for a second, he might slip away again. His breathing was shallow but steady. The chamber never fully darkened. Crystal lamps hummed s
AMARA’S POV I woke up choking on fear. Then I heard the sound of dogs barking close by. I shot upright, my body stiff with panic. The forest was still dark, the ground cold beneath me, my clothes damp from the night air. For half a second, I didn’t know where I was. Then the memory from the faci
AMARA’S POV The forest was darker than I expected, and the air smelled damp. I walked slowly, my boots crunched over the fallen leaves. Ahead, I noticed a small hut tucked between thick trees. Its windows were dark, and the door hung slightly open. For no reason, I felt drawn toward it. Maybe cu
AMARA'S POV The moment the door swung open, my hands trembled. I almost dropped the book behind my back. Samuel Keller, my stepfather stood there, blocking the doorway. His brows pushed together as he stared at me... then at my trembling hands. He looked like he'd walked in on someone who'd see
