MasukELENA POV
I pick up my leather strap bag from the dining table, leaving the house. Two days. I have to disappear in two days or I'm trapped for life. I barely notice the cold air of the dusty streets. Gamma enforcers patrol the area, half of them keeping their eyes peeled for the rogue wolves. The others, without a doubt, making sure that I don't try to run away like I did three years back.
I blink away the images that flood my mind, snapshots of my eighteenth birthday when Lukas stormed in, claiming me as his grand prize.
Heads turn as I walk down the street, whispers of the Alpha's bride clinging to me as I pass.
The House of Vella, the dress shop where I work, is buzzing with people as always. Time seems to stop when I walk in.
"There she is..."
"I hear the ceremony is tomorrow..."
"Haven't you heard? It's been postponed."
Even the customers stop to gawk at me. I press forward, trying to blend in with the purple satin gowns and silk fabrics on hangers.
"This way." Tess takes my hand, pulling me into one of the private rooms. She's my best friend, and the only one that is in on my escape plan.
She pulls the door close, pressing her ears to the wood, listening for anyone passing before turning around. "So? Did it work?"
I nod. She exhales in relief.
"But we have only two days." I hang my leather bag on one of the hangers, forgetting all about the dress I was supposed to deliver.
"Then we'll get you out of the pack tomorrow." Tess paces back and forth. She spins to face me, her eyes twinkling. "There's a masked party tonight, at the Bloodmoon borders. It's the perfect cover. No one will know if you..."
I think of it. "I... I don't have anything to wear..."
A fist pounds hard against the door. We lock eyes. My heart thumps faster.
"Elena? Elena Graymoor. We know you're there. Your dress fitting starts in two minutes."
"Go." Tess pushes me forward. "Meet me here by dusk."
I open the door, looking back at her. "Thank you."
She gives a small grin, shrugging. "Omegas stick together.”
***That night, I sit up in my bed listening to the ticking of the huge grandfather clock downstairs.
12 midnight.
The whole house is asleep and half of the pack. I climb softly down my bed, the smallest room at the end of the corridor. I feel for the leather bag hidden under the bed, pulling it out.
My feet creak softly against the wooden floorboard as I walk out of the room.
I pause at Rune's door. It's slightly ajar. I see her figure quietly asleep on the bed.
I should walk in... Leave a note, one last hug before I disappear forever.
I step back instead. If I walk in, I won't have the strength to disappear tonight. I close the door instead. "Goodbye Rune."
Tess is waiting at the house of Vella like she promised. She nods at me, leading me in through the back door. I wasn't going to ask her how she got the keys.
"I have it." She pulls out a folded gown from a bag, laying it out on the work table. My breath catches.
It's a flowing olive green gown with gold accents, far too fancy for someone like me.
I put it on, staring at my reflection in the mirror. The top is halter-style, crossing neatly over the chest, my stomach bare. A gold chain rests on my waist where the skirt starts, held together by slim gold bands around the waist and hips.
Tess grins. "You'll blend right in at the ball. No one will even guess who you are."
I nod. I can barely recognise the girl in the mirror either. Tess holds up my hair with a brooch and pins, letting a few strands curl at either side of my face.
She puts a bit of makeup and glitter on my cheeks and finally, she hands me a gold mask.
I step back from the mirror. "It's perfect." I can't help but smile a little, even with my heart pounding.
My smile falters however, my gaze turning back to hers. "What about you?"
Tess reaches deeper into the bag, pulling out another dress, clearly meant for her.
It's simpler, soft brown with an olive green lace, enough to match without drawing too much attention. A small apron-like cloth wraps around her waist. She puts on a half mask that covers only her eyes.
"As long as anyone is concerned, I'm your omega for the ball." She straps on my leather bag, her eyes twinkling under the light. "Now let's get out of here before the pack enforcers notice you're gone."
We move fast, clearing all traces before stepping into the cold night. I hug my bare shoulders, wishing for a cloak but there's no time to turn back. Getting to the border on foot takes more time than I would have liked, but my sore feet pay off when I hear the music.
It's loud, coming from a grand building, glistening with purple lights. The bar opens into a huge hall. First, I'm taken aback by the crowd of people. The ladies look sophisticated in velvet, and satin and golden brooches. This wasn't some random masked party.
It was high stakes. Somewhere I shouldn't be seen in. A couple makes out beside the driveway. I turn my eyes away, feeling my cheeks heat up. Perfumed scents assault the air with a mix of body sweat as people sway on the dancefloor like it's their last night.
Tess drags me through the grand doors. "Just stick with me. We should be out of here soon..." She whispers, slipping on her mask.
Damien’s POV“What can I do for you? Are you sure royalty like you should be in a dirty place like this?”The man says again, clearly trying to get on my skin. But I’m past that stage in my life where silly words get the best of me.I smile. “I’m here to discuss business.”He smirks. “Business? From how I know it, I believe you’ve lost your fighters and your brother’s army is onto you, trying to cut you down. Are you sure you’re still up for business?”My jaw tightens. Words related to travel first because how the hell did he even hear something like that?“Well, not everything you hear is true. You should know this by now.”He comes closer to me. “While that may be true, I would also like you to know that I’m not an idiot. I mean, I know you see me as one. A strong good for nothing idiot. But trust me, I’m much more than that.”I squint my eyes. “ And what makes you think that I see you like that?”He smirks. “It is written on your face. You’re only here talking to me because you hav
Damien’s POVWith Vale and Tess gone, the leadership and management of the group falls solely on Elena and me. This makes me realize how sharing duty actually makes life easier for everyone. Not that the people are difficult to manage alone but there’s a lot of factors that make you realize sharing is the most important. The meeting day with the rogues finally and Elena and I made our way over with a few guards leaving Taren in charge.“How do you think this is going to go? Do you have any hope of positivity?” Elena asks.I turn to her, looking blankly.“Honestly, I have no idea, but I hope it turns out well. We really need it, Elena. If we are going to have any chance, we need their help and compliance.”She sighs. “At least you’ve got hope. At least you’re not being pessimistic.”“What do you mean?” I ask, squinting my brows. She let out another sigh. “I’m trying to control it, Damien. I swear, I’m really trying to control it, but I can’t help but feel none of this is going to wo
Damien. I find myself at the foot of the mountain, overlooking the ocean below. My mind sub travels back to what just happened a few minutes ago. Vale, declaring his love publicly to his woman. I am beyond happy for him. In this line of life, every opportunity of happiness has to be taken because it is not every time we are fortunate to experience things like that. And to think it is my best friend of all people, it makes everything so much more interesting. I hear footsteps behind me and I don’t need to look back to know who it is. Him. “Hey, man,” he says, shoving me on the back. I turn slightly, smiling. “Hey, lover boy” I draw teasingly. He smiles. “Yeah, whatever. I know you’ve been dying to say that.” “And I know you’ve been dying for me to say that.” We both laugh. “But thank you, love is a beautiful thing. Now I know what you’ve been feeling with Elena.” As soon as it says this, I go still. My mind goes back to that short moment we shared in the hall. “I think i
Elena’s POV As we prepare for the meeting with the rogues, we still have a few hours left so we continue to use it to just catch up. Then, Vale rises to his feet, face looking serious as if he has something important to share. “Man, what’s up?” Damien asks. He smiles. “I have something important to say.” This draws everyone’s attention, including Tess. Then, his eyes turn to her. She quickly looks away and I notice the shyness on her face. I nudge her shoulder. “Girl, you’re so red. Will you calm down?” I say teasingly. She rolls her eyes jokingly. “Oh, Elena, stop teasing me.” I smile. “You know I’m not teasing you. The guy literally has his eyes on you and you’re burning red. What conclusion do you expect me to draw?” She looks at me. “Just stop. He probably just wants to talk about the meeting with the rouges.” “Yeah, right. You really expect me to believe that, don’t you?” “Well I expect you to stop thinking about it. It’s nothing,” she replies, still smiling. I drop
Damien’s POVWe travel for a few nights, some of us always break to make sure no strange person is following our movements. So far, we have nothing like that and I just hope it continues to remain that way.As we travel, I can’t help but to notice the little body language between Vale and Tess.I have been suspecting that there’s something there but the man is literally being secretive with me. Until now because I can’t take it anymore. When she goes back to Elena, I shove his shoulder a little, drawing his attention.“Okay, man, do you have something to tell me?” I ask quietly. He looks at me, squinting his eyes, as if trying to understand what I’m saying.“Oh my goodness, don’t you dare pretend with me? I know you have something to say.”He shakes his head. “I really don’t know what you’re talking about. If you have something you want me to say, why don’t you just ask?”The question comes out genuinely so I know he really probably doesn’t know what I’m on about. I decide to just as
Elena’s POVAfter the pleasantries, five of us sit at a round table to discuss everything that has happened so far.“But when we came here, no one came out,” Taren says.Vale nods. “Yes. It was because we didn’t hear any familiar voices.”“Oh.”“So what really happened?” Damien asks.Vale sighed. “It’s a long story. We were all just sitting around when we heard the noise.”I squint my eyes. “Noise? What noise are you talking about?”He stares at me. “The Bloodmoon guards. They followed us down here.”My breath catches mid-air.“What?” Damien quickly asks.“Exactly. We are also surprised. It had been at least a few days since our last battle, and they never showed up after that. Not even during our trip down here. So we were very surprised when they caught us unaware.”“Wait, are you suggesting that someone ratted you guys out? Like there’s a mole amongst us?”We all look around each other before I speak up. “I don’t think so. We all know what we are doing, we know what we are going th
