Cindy's POV

I boarded the bus that was going to take me back home from my graduation which I had just attended all by myself.

I know I should feel sad but I'm surprisingly not, because I know my mum would have loved to be there but she unfortunately couldn't make it since she had been busy preparing the house for the arrival of the Smith's which was fast approaching, I heard they were coming back in two day's time.

Anyways I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Cindy Mensah, I'm eighteen and I live with my mum… if you could even call it that. What I meant is, my mum and I live together in the servant quarters of the Smith family.

And if you are guessing, then yes, my mum and I work as maids in the Smith mansion. Two years ago that wasn't the story. My dad was a flight lieutenant in the  Ghana Air Force, a very prestigious one, with a lot of decorations. He went for peacekeeping and never returned. He was then pronounced dead after a year of searching and that was when everything went downhill.

My mum was a stay-at-home mum then, but she had to take drastic measures when we couldn't pay for bills any longer and were evicted. Luckily for us, my mum was offered a job in the Smith mansion with free accommodation which she quickly accepted for my sake. We had no choice back then, and it was like a silver lining which we gladly latched onto.

Although the situation isn’t that great, we live together and that alone was enough to make me happy. I collected my thoughts when I heard the mate call out my stop.  I alighted and quickly walked home.

The house was full of life when I got home. Servants were everywhere making sure that everything was in order. I hurriedly went to the quarters and changed my outfit into one of the maid uniforms that I own and proceeded to go help out.

I found my mum in the kitchen preparing supper for everyone. "Mum I'm home." I called out when I saw her.

“Hey Cinderella!" My mum said excitedly, engulfing me in a hug. "Congratulations, I'm so proud of you and I know your dad is too." Mum said with teary eyes. I couldn’t say anything… so I just smiled at her through my tears.

We were still smiling at each other when Janet entered the kitchen. Janet is also a maid and the only one around here who is almost the same age as me. She was also my best friend.

"See who is back from her graduation" she said smiling. "Congratulations, Sis." she added giving me a hug as well. "That isn't really the reason why I’m here though. Mr. Smith just called… their flight has being changed so they will be here by 12 noon tomorrow." Janet said.

Mum and I looked at each other in surprise when we heard the news and she quickly assigned me to go clean two rooms for the Smith's children. I knew they had two kids but I didn't actually know if they were old or not.

The Smiths were very private people so it wasn’t really surprising that even we the workers didn’t know much about them.

Two hours later...

I just finished cleaning both rooms and scrubbing the bathroom and I'm tired as hell. I hope they appreciate it though. I walked down the stairs and went directly to the kitchen because I was starving after all that work. All the house helps were already gathered over there having their meal with my mum. She pointed to my food which she had already served and I joined them and immediately started to eat. "I hope everything has been taken care of"?

Mr. Jones the chief steward asked. Everyone nodded and got back to eating. We all finished up, cleared the kitchen and headed to our respective rooms.

I redid my tiny bed, (I really like my stuff to be perfect) and went to the bathroom to freshen up. When I returned, my mum was already in her bed reading her bible. I bid her goodnight and climbed into bed.

I woke up with a start when my alarm blared. I quickly went to the washroom to freshen up. After I was done, I dressed up and was heading towards the main house, when Bro Yaw, the driver came up to me. “Cindy, your mum asked me to tell you  that, you’ll be accompanying me to the airport.”

I was definitely surprised, but anything that'd help me skip chores and get to see new places was fine by me.

“Okay.” I replied shortly and went in search for my mum. I found her in the kitchen as usual preparing breakfast for everyone. “Mum good morning.” I said, going over to give her a hand.

“Good Morning dear, how was your night?"

“Good, but why didn't you wake me up? I could have helped you a little before it was time to do my work.” I answered back.

“Cindy.” Mum called out with a sigh.

“It's my work and moreover I don't want you to be stressing yourself.”

“Mum! I'm the one supposed to be saying that, you work too much.” I argued, causing her to roll her eyes at me.

"Whatever. Go and help Janet with her mopping chores instead. Breakfast will be ready by the time you are done." Mum said, dismissing me.

“I'm supposed to leave with Bro Yaw to the airport by 11.” I told Janet.

"Really?… how lucky. You get to be one of the first people meeting the Smiths after a very long time.” She said, not bothering to hide the look of envy on her face.

“I hope they have a cute son. Lord knows you need a boyfriend." She continued, causing me to gape at her.

“What do you mean by that, you know very well, that's not going to happen.” I replied with a smile.

“We don't even know the gender of the kids and you are already daydreaming about my nonexistent love life.” I said with a shake of my head.

“Hey! Don't say that.” She admonished cheekily.

“You know Mr. and Mrs. Smith are old… their kids are definitely going to be in their 20s so embrace yourself gal." Janet said, laughing at the disgusted look on my face.

“Why are we best friends again?” I asked mockingly.

(Cindy instantly tried to shield her daughter and dragged the little girl behind her) It was already too late though; Lisa and Thelma had already gotten a good glance of the little girl who undeniably looked like someone they all know too well. Lisa couldn’t register the anything as the events unfolds right in front of her eyes. Everything she knew of her brother and the former maid was all a lie. How could this happen? This didn’t make sense and she was going to make it make sense before leaving. Cindy on the other hand wasn’t taking this slightly though. She tried to get them all to go back to her car, but even she knew that it was not going to work, and Lisa calling out her name actually confirmed it. The former maid just couldn’t believe it. Six years. Six freaking years. She had managed to avoid the poisonous family for six whole years and now here they all were, swarming into her life all over again like evil bees… or even worse, locusts. All the walls she had built up al

  • FATE   Chapter Twenty-five

Chapter twenty-fiveWe had been discharged the following day just as the nurse had promised. A week had passed by since then.Everything was going great and I couldn’t be much happier. Mum had come by a couple of times, and that helped a lot since I had to go to work and Kayla needed someone to be by her side while she had that long week rest the doctor had prescribed for her along with her medications.I woke up early as usual, my heart giddy with that usual thrill of knowing I was going to work, but when I stepped into my bathroom for a quick shower, a quick look at my calendar revealed that I had it all wrong. It was Sunday. I’m pretty sure the loud groan of frustration I let out woke up the entire neighborhood, but then again, I always loved exaggerating so I wasn’t really sure. Why in the hell had I woken up early then?It was too late for church… seeing as I wasn’t ready physically and mentally, and being one of those people who could never go to bed once they were awake, I kn

  • FATE   Chapter Twenty-four

BRIAN’S POV“Rosa! You coming? We’re running late! I hollered down the hallway, glancing at my watch in frustration. Honestly, what was it with women and being late all the time? We were just going to see the obstetrician for fuck’s sake.“Geez Brian,” Rosaline huffed, hopping towards me and trying to slip on her heels in the process. “You’d think you’re the pregnant one here, come on, let lose.” She teased playfully, but I paid her no mind, my eyes focusing on the long strappy things she was wearing. “Are you sure you should be wearing those though?”She shot me a pointed look. “You do know I’m only pregnant, not invalid, right?” She inched close to me, planting a light kiss on my lips. “I’m really glad you’re all in with me, Brian,”“I’m really glad I am too, Rosa.” I admitted softly with a smile, pulling h

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREECindy’s POV“Cindy, will you move in with me?”That sentence was our parting words, since I couldn’t say anything after he dropped that bombshell on me.I had tucked in Kayla and had also retired to the comfort of my sheets but the comfortable goodness couldn’t help take my mind off what Sam had said earlier. He’s amazing and all but he knew I had just moved away from my parents not quite long ago and he also knew that Kayla and I had just started to finally settle in our new home so I didn’t know why he suddenly wanted to rush things all of a sudden. To be honest, he had rendered me speechless because I didn’t want him thinking I wasn’t fully committed but I was also very proud of what I had been able to build. Sam has always been patient with me and always understanding, so I was really hoping this wasn’t going to be a problem.By the time I was drifting off i

  • FATE   Chapter Twenty-two

Chapter 22 Cindy’s POV Well if you haven't figured it out by now, I'll tell you. Sam is my fiancé. He’s a good guy, I'm actually very lucky to have him you know? It's funny how when he started pursuing me, I initially hated his guts. We met at the neighborhood’s park, one cool afternoon. Kayla was just three years old then and the weather was too perfect to not go on a walk. He just happened to be walking his dog that day, a very cute brown and white collie that even I could not help but admire. I must have been staring for quite too long, because before I knew it, Kayla had torn her hand away from mine and was dashing towards the dog at amazing speed. I swore under my breath and chased after her. My little girl was a very passionate animal lover even at such a young age, but my only concern in that moment was to make sure the dog didn't harm her in any way. flashback
