The door clicked softly behind Lauren as she stepped into the suite.

It looked the same as when she’d left earlier—neat, pristine, quiet—but everything felt different now. The silence wasn’t peaceful. It was heavy. The kind of silence that came right before something ended.

She walked slowly, her heels making soft thuds against the floor. Her palms were clammy. Her heart was beating so loud, she was sure Richard would hear it from across the room.

He was there, exactly where she expected him—sitting on the edge of the couch, sleeves rolled up, a drink in his hand. He looked up when he heard her come in, his expression unreadable. Maybe hopeful. Maybe tired.

“Lauren,” he said, with a quiet nod. “You came back.”

“Of course I did.” Her voice was calm, too calm. She swallowed. “We need to talk.”

He gestured toward the seat across from him. “Have a seat.”

She didn’t move.

“No. I think I need to say this standing.”

  • FELL IN LOVE WITH MY HUSBAND'S BODYGUARD   CHAPTER FORTY: LOUIS'S SECRET LIFE BEGINS TO UNFOLD

The hotel room was steeped in silence, dimly lit by the golden glow of a single bedside lamp. Louis stood by the tall window, arms crossed, his gaze drifting over the city skyline that never slept. Below, traffic murmured like a distant ocean, but up here, in this space—he was suspended between two lives.Lauren’s message still sat on his screen.“Can we talk later?”He hadn’t answered yet. Couldn’t. Not until he faced the other side of himself—the one he had run from.He walked to the drawer of the sleek nightstand and opened it carefully. Beneath folded black shirts, he retrieved a small, intricately carved wooden box. Inside, nestled in dark velvet, was a heavy gold ring engraved with the Montaldi family crest: a rearing lion wrapped in a laurel vine. A symbol of nobility. Legacy. Power. He stared at it, jaw clenched. His other phone—one Lauren didn’t know about—buzzed on the nightstand. It hadn’t rung in weeks. The screen

The first golden threads of morning stretched over the horizon, casting warm hues over the shoreline. The beach was quiet—emptied of tourists, noise, and expectations. Just the sound of waves sliding against the sand and seagulls crying faintly in the distance.Lauren had slipped out of the suite without a sound, wrapped in a light sweater over her silk nightdress, sandals barely making a whisper as she walked along the shore. She didn’t know where she was going—only that she needed air.She needed to breathe without guilt. She found a smooth patch of sand under a palm tree and sat down, hugging her knees to her chest, watching the sky shift from pale lavender to rose gold. The ache inside her had dulled since the night before, but it still pulsed—low and constant.Suddenly, her phone buzzed beside her on the sand. A strange mix of dread and hope twisted in her stomach as she glanced at the screen.Mum.Her chest tighten

The lights of the suite were dimmed to a soft glow, casting warm shadows on the walls. The air was still, almost too quiet—like the room was holding its breath, mirroring her own. Lauren sat at the edge of the bed, unmoving. Her clutch lay forgotten on the dresser, her earrings beside it. One heel had fallen sideways on the floor, and the other was still dangling from her foot. She hadn’t changed. Hadn’t spoken. Hadn’t even blinked much since they returned from the rooftop bar. Richard had gone into the bathroom not long after they arrived. She could hear the shower still running, the hum of water masking the silence in the room, but not the silence inside her. His words echoed in her head like an old recording that refused to stop playing. > “I want to fix this.” > “I’m sorry I hurt you.” > “I’ll take things slow if that’s what you need.” But it was too late. Too

The rooftop bar shimmered under soft golden lights, a breeze passing gently through, carrying faint notes of jazz from the speakers and the scent of night blossoms blooming somewhere in the background.Lauren sat at the edge of the table, her fingers resting on the cool glass of her drink, gaze distant. She wasn't really there—not in the moment. Her body was present, seated across from her husband. But her heart was still in a lantern-lit raft house… wrapped in Louis’s arms.Richard hadn’t touched his drink. His hands were clasped tightly together in front of him, knuckles pale. He had been staring at her for what felt like forever, trying to summon the courage to say what should’ve been said long ago.“I know you found out… at the party,” he said quietly.Lauren blinked once, but her expression didn’t change. She didn’t need to say yes. He already knew she had seen it in Clara’s lingering gaze, the tension in his voice, the way his hand

The clock ticked past 11:37 PM. Richard stepped into the hotel suite, loosening his tie with a tired sigh. The room was quiet, dimly lit by a single bedside lamp. He expected to find Lauren already curled under the sheets or maybe flipping through channels like she usually did on long nights. But the bed was untouched. And she was nowhere in sight. He checked the bathroom. Empty. “Lauren?” he called softly, already reaching for his phone. A knot twisted in his chest. He tapped her name and held the phone to his ear, listening to it ring once… twice… She finally picked up on the fourth. “Hello?” Her voice was slightly breathless, barely above a whisper. “Hey… where are you?” Richard asked, trying to sound casual. “I just got back to the room.” There was a pause. Then: “I—I took a walk. Out in the garden. I needed a little air.
