Kael's POV

I wheeled myself with Selena beside me back to the room and Nia behind her.

"My lady," Nia called, catching up to us at the corridor junction. "I've placed the meal in your room," she said, watching Selena's face for a reaction before continuing. "I tasted it myself to make sure it's safe." She paused. "I'll leave you and the Alpha to yourselves."

She turned and left before either of us could say anything.

Selena looked at the connecting door, then at me. "She tasted it herself," she

  • FOR REVENGE, I MARRIED THE CRIPPLED LYCAN KING    Chapter 62: Curse Broken

Kael's POVWe heard the fires change before we saw them. Not the sound of them — the quality. The particular shift in the air that happens when something burning stops burning the way it is supposed to. Thorne registered it at the same moment I did and his hand went to his sword without him deciding to."She is in," I said."Alpha—" Thorne started."Faster," I said. We rode harder. The perimeter came into view two minutes later, wolves stationed at the outer line, but they were not looking outward at us. They were looking inward, toward the fires, toward the center of the formation, toward whatever was happening inside it that had made every one of them abandon their post facing outward and turn."They are not fighting us," Thorne said, pulling up beside me."No," I said. "They are watching her."We broke through the outer line unopposed, the perimeter wolves stepping aside without a command, their eyes still on the center. Not hostile. Not suppressed. Alert. Present. The specific al

  • FOR REVENGE, I MARRIED THE CRIPPLED LYCAN KING    Chapter 61: Ritual Reversed

Selena's POVThe fires were visible from a mile out.Six of them, arranged in a pattern I recognized from the archive records, the hexagonal formation of a binding ritual, designed to create a contained field that would amplify whatever was placed at its center. They burned high and steady despite the wind, which told me practitioners had been at work before the fires were even lit, layering protections into the ground itself.I rode in alone. No one stopped me at the perimeter. I had expected guards, expected to have to push through something — but the outer line parted when they saw me coming, the wolves stationed there stepping back in the specific way of people who have been told to let someone through. Lucien had prepared for exactly this. He had known I would come ahead of the army.He was standing at the center of the formation when I dismounted, ten feet from the largest fire, dressed for ceremony in a way I had never seen him dressed before — dark formal, no smile yet, watch

  • FOR REVENGE, I MARRIED THE CRIPPLED LYCAN KING    Chapter 60: Race Against Time

Selena's POVWe rode out at midnight. No ceremony, no torches, no formal send off, just the east gate opening quietly in the dark and Thorne's unit moving first, fast and silent, with the main force spreading out behind them like water finding the shape of the ground it crosses.I had expected a carriage. Kael said nothing about a carriage and when I came down to the yard he was already on horseback, a dark stallion that stood very still while he settled into the saddle with the ease of a man whose body had remembered something it never actually forgot just could not access.I looked at him up there for a second longer than I meant to.He caught it. The corner of his mouth moved. "Ride," he said.I rode.We did not talk much in the first hour. The dark was thick and the road was quiet and the army moved behind us like a held breath, and there was something about that, the silence of three thousand people and horses and equipment moving through the dark without a single unnecessary so

Kael's POVI was still looking at the note when Selena came in.She read it over my shoulder, set it back down, and said "he made a mistake" before I had finished deciding how angry I was."He threatened villages," I said."He threatened them," she said. "There is a difference." She pulled out the chair beside me and sat down, not across the table but right next to me, close, and looked at the note with the expression she used when she was working through something fast. "If he wanted to burn villages he would have done it already. He sent this because he wants me walking in on my own two feet with steady blood and a calm mind. Panicked blood does not serve the ritual. Chaos does not serve the ritual." She looked at me. "He needs everything clean and cooperative and he knows threatening the people I am supposed to be protecting is the fastest way to make me cooperative.""Which means you want to use it," I said."Which means I want to find who put it there," she said. "Because whoeve

  • FOR REVENGE, I MARRIED THE CRIPPLED LYCAN KING    Chapter 58: Enemy Within

Kael's POVThe next day, I watched Ariana train for twenty minutes before I left.Mira had cleared the east sitting room and moved the furniture to the walls, leaving a wide open space in the center. Selena stood in the middle of it with her eyes closed and her hands at her sides while Mira talked her through something I could not fully follow from the doorway, something about the difference between passive contact and active intent, about the bloodline responding to will rather than accident.Selena's face was the focused version. The one she wore in council when something required every part of her attention and she was giving it willingly.I left before she opened her eyes. Not because I could not watch. Because I could watch too easily and what I was watching was my wife being trained to walk into the most dangerous situation I had ever had to authorize, and I needed to be in the strategy room making clear decisions rather than standing in a doorway failing to be neutral about it

  • FOR REVENGE, I MARRIED THE CRIPPLED LYCAN KING    Chapter 57: Forgotten Heir

Selena's POVThey arrived at first light of the morning, Two of them, on horses that moved quietly for animals that size, wearing no colors and carrying no weapons that I could see. The elder was a woman, something I had not expected, small and upright, somewhere past seventy with the kind of face that had long since stopped performing anything for anyone. The younger was a man in his forties, silent, positioned slightly behind her in the way of someone whose job was to observe rather than speak. They did not bow when they came into the meeting room. They looked at Kael with respect and they looked at me with something else entirely.Recognition.Not the way people recognized me as the Luna. Something older and more specific. Like looking at a face they had been shown a picture of and finally seeing in person."Luna Selena," the elder said. Her voice was low and unhurried. "My name is Vael Mira. I have been waiting to meet you for a very long time.""How long?" I asked."Since before
