Lucille's POV
The beautiful ambiance of the reserved section for our anniversary dinner was a sight to behold. Not like I expected anything else. For nine years, Ben has always put in a lot to ensure our anniversary was perfect. He always said it was one of his ways to show how much love he had for me. Today wasn't just our anniversary, but my birthday as well. Every year, I looked forward to it. Sitting across from him at the table made me feel like a child again. His focus was always on me, his hands over mine. Many said after a couple of years, the honeymoon phase would wash off, but every day since our wedding has been the honeymoon phase. “Can we get the bill, please?” Ben said to our waiter who offered him a small smile. Ben turned to me with that handsome smile of his as he rubbed the back of my palm with his thumb. His phone rang on the table, bringing both our attention to it. He turned over his phone and his smile died, staring at it. “Is there a problem?” I asked. He sighed, pulling away as he silenced the call. “Work. You don't have to worry. My focus is only on you tonight.” His words warmed my heart. However, the call came in once again. I saw a vein pop up at the side of his head. “Maybe you should take it. It might be an emergency,” I told him. He looked reluctant, but I assured him, rubbing his palm on the table. “Don't worry. I'm fine over here,” I said. His gaze moved from his phone, still vibrating on the table, to my smiling face. He nodded, grabbed the phone, and stood up. “I'll be back. Here's my card,” he said, handing me his card before leaving. The waiter returned with the bill. “Thank you,” I said, handing over the card. I rubbed my wedding ring as it itched. I was tempted to take it off, but refused to. This was the very thing I cherished more than my law firm. It symbolizes our love and vows. I tried to endure it but it was too much. With no other choice, I pulled it out, heaving a sigh of relief as I placed the ring down at the side. “I'm sorry, ma'am, but the card declined,” the waiter said politely, handing me the card. I stared at the card. This was the card I gave to Ben. It was for our joint account. It had over twenty million the last I checked. Why then would it decline for just a million dollar bill? I took out my debit card and handed it over, but the waiter returned with the same information. “Are you sure there's nothing wrong with the machine?” I asked calmly. “I assure you, ma'am, our machine works perfectly,” the waiter responded. I sighed, taking out my credit card. “Use this then,” I said. With a single swipe, it was done. I relaxed, but I couldn't understand why none of our debit cards worked. “I'm so sorry, my love. It was an emergency, but I got it sorted,” Ben said, taking a seat. He looked disheveled, but I didn't think much about it. “Ben, I tried using our debit cards, but they all didn't go through. Why?” I said. Ben smiled nervously. “I should have told you. I borrowed a little money for an important investment,” he said. “And you needed forty-five million?” I asked, shocked. “Baby,” he took my hand, rubbing it. “It's just forty-five million. You make more than that a month. Plus, you said you'll help me with my investments.” “I didn't think you'll need that much in a go,” I said. “C'mon baby, are you going to be stingy with money now?” “I'm just-” “It's your birthday. It's our anniversary. Don't ruin our date. We'll talk about it later, okay?” I stared at Ben for a moment. This was the first time he had done something like this. He must have his reasons. I should not have acted out. I nodded, apologetic. “I'm sorry. I was just a little worried. You didn't tell me about it,” I said. He pulled away. “Yes, I wanted to surprise you with the profits. You're not mad, right?” I shook my head, giving him a smile. “I can't be,” “Did you get the bill?” he asked, and I nodded. His eyes landed on my bare fingers and then on the ring on the side. I saw the panic in his eyes as he sat up. “Why did you take off your ring?” he asked. “I felt itchy. My finger is so red already,” I raised my finger, showing him the reddish spot around my ring finger. He held it, then reached for the ring with a napkin. “It must be dirty,” he said, wiping down the ring with both hands holding onto the ring. “I actually thought of that, but it has kept on itching for days. I think it even got worse with each clean. Maybe, I should take it to a jeweler,” I said. “No need. I'll handle it, but you'll have to put it on for now,” he said, taking my hand to slide it in. But just a little contact and my finger felt like it was on fire. I pulled my hand away, shaking my head. “Maybe later,” I smiled, softly, rubbing my finger. It almost felt like it would take my finger in seconds. It made me wonder if it would have become worse if I didn't take it off earlier. Ben stood up and stared at me without a word. The look in his eyes made my heart skip a beat. In over ten years of being with him, he has never looked at me that way. “Be-Ben?” I stammered as he walked away. I shot up in my seat, panicked. “Benja...” I paused when he stopped in the middle of the room and spun around. “Benjamin?” I said, taking a step forward. He dropped on one knee, his lips crooked.Lucille's POV The ground felt too solid underneath my feet.I wasn't sure if I heard right but that look on Benjamin's face was enough to have me question everything. It paled. His eyes darting from me to King who looked pleased with himself.“What?” Benjamin frowned, his eyes still darting back and forth between us.I opened my mouth to speak but before the words could leave my lips, King spoke. “I’m your new neighbor. I thought to say hi,” he said. “And I brought some food.”Benjamin still seemed sceptical. “Then why did you-”“I was only pulling your legs,” King responded before he could finish, still with no expression on his face.He was stoic and he almost seemed annoyed speaking with Benjamin. While Benjamin didn't seem comfortable with him either. He was acting tough but he couldn't hide his fear and King wasn't trying to make it any better.Benjamin smiled with a nod. “Oh, thank you but next time,” he came to me, bringing me close. “button up. It's not exactly pleasant to ha
Lucille’s POVThose words made me question a lot of things. I found a way to navigate through it before he finally fell asleep but it didn’t mean I could get it out of my head.I didn’t want shared custody after our divorce and I had my way to get him to accept it but it would hurt Harvey. He had no reason to hate Benjamin. He was his father and to be fair, I didn’t want him to hate him. I just needed him to understand but how far could an eight year old understand.I hated that I had to leave and the situation I was in right now. “Sign here,” the officer pointed.I did that and signed on some more pages before I dropped the pen. “Alright,” the officer said, sending a hand signal to his colleagues.Once I spotted Benjamin, I rose from the seat. “Thank you, officer,” I said.Benjamin was taken off the handcuffs while I just stood there watching. He still had a bruised mark on his face with new injuries on his body.Prison life didn’t seem to favour him too much. “Honey,” his voice was
Lucille’s POVI tossed the gun to the side, my hands shaking. King chuckled at that. “What is wrong with you?”I took in a deep breath, still staring down at his abdomen. The gun was empty but I wasn’t so sure. I’ve seen him shot before and the man was anything but cared for it.“Scared? Worried?” he asked.“Yes, I wouldn’t want a dead man in my house,” I said. His fingers came around my neck, pulling me close and I swear my lips itched to have his on mine right now. I knew he was doing all this on purpose but I was ready to fall.Just this once. His clean breath grazed my face as he spoke next. “You can’t get rid of me that easily even if you try, honey,” he said, etching closer.I subconsciously shut my eyes, waiting for the contact but it never came. Instead, my neck became bare as he stepped back. My lust was quickly replaced with embarrassment as I opened my eyes.“I’ll let you rest for the night,” he said, before exiting the house.I grabbed a pillow and was ready to throw it at
Lucille’s POV“Let go of me!” I struggled but that did not make him waver. We made a stop but I couldn’t make out where we were. The path was pitch black. I tried to scream as he fumbled with a door but he dropped me from his shoulder to his arms. The movement was too fast that my scream sank down my throat and my hands came around his neck to keep me from crashing to the ground.“I guess you want this,” he whispered.“I don’t,” I said. “Let go of me.”I tried to get off him again but he held me firm. In two minutes, he dropped me. I yelped from the force, breathing heavily as I sank deeper into the couch, staring up at him.I couldn’t see his whole face but the light from the moon helped with his eyes. It confused me what I saw there. The lights came on and I realized we were back home but before I could celebrate I noticed the men scattered around my house. My heart dropped and I swallowed. These men were scary looking and worse at every side of the living room. Were they here to cl
Lucille’s POV“What is this?” a voice came through the speakers.“This isn’t important yet but what if I told you the new technology Mr. Mathew told you he created was not from him,” Benjamin’s voice followed.“Really?” the man sounded skeptical. At this point, Mathew and Raymond were on their feets.“Mr. Mathew stole my work. I made the designs and the coding. I have the patent with me,” Benjamin said.“So why are you telling me this?”“Work with me. Crumble that company. Once I have it, I would ensure you get your share and would never be treated unfairly again.”“Turn it off!” Benjamin screamed, rushing over to the laptop. No one tried to stop him. He tapped furiously on the keyboard but it only changed the recording. “You stole it,” Katherine’s voice came and blood drained from her face.“Obviously, how do you expect that I convince Mr. Arnold that I know what I am doing,” he scoffed. “This would be perfect. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s launch. I will make sure that company drowns.
Lucille's POV The soft hum of car was all that filled the space as we rode down the road. The sky was dark with the lights eliminating the paths.King took his eyes briefly away from the road. “What is it?” I asked, my tone almost hostile.“Feeling better?” he asked.I had so many things I wanted to say to him right now but I chose to stay silent until I saw him turn a corner and we were back to the road we had drove past a few minutes ago.“Where are you taking me?” I asked, looking out the window then back at him.“No where,” he replied with a calm tone.“So why did you bring me here?”“Do you feel better?” he asked again.“Should I be? And why do you keep asking that? Aren't we meant to be heading somewhere to help your case?”“I used that to get you out of the house but it sure would help when needed.”He sighed when I didn't give in to all that. “I thought you'd be upset after witnessing your husband's infidelity so I thought of a way to help you get better,” he said.“A little
