Lucille's POV

The beautiful ambiance of the reserved section for our anniversary dinner was a sight to behold. Not like I expected anything else. For nine years, Ben has always put in a lot to ensure our anniversary was perfect.

He always said it was one of his ways to show how much love he had for me. Today wasn't just our anniversary, but my birthday as well. Every year, I looked forward to it.

Sitting across from him at the table made me feel like a child again. His focus was always on me, his hands over mine. Many said after a couple of years, the honeymoon phase would wash off, but every day since our wedding has been the honeymoon phase.

“Can we get the bill, please?” Ben said to our waiter who offered him a small smile.

Ben turned to me with that handsome smile of his as he rubbed the back of my palm with his thumb. His phone rang on the table, bringing both our attention to it.

He turned over his phone and his smile died, staring at it. “Is there a problem?” I asked.

He sighed, pulling away as he silenced the call. “Work. You don't have to worry. My focus is only on you tonight.”

His words warmed my heart. However, the call came in once again. I saw a vein pop up at the side of his head. “Maybe you should take it. It might be an emergency,” I told him.

He looked reluctant, but I assured him, rubbing his palm on the table. “Don't worry. I'm fine over here,” I said.

His gaze moved from his phone, still vibrating on the table, to my smiling face. He nodded, grabbed the phone, and stood up. “I'll be back. Here's my card,” he said, handing me his card before leaving.

The waiter returned with the bill. “Thank you,” I said, handing over the card.

I rubbed my wedding ring as it itched. I was tempted to take it off, but refused to. This was the very thing I cherished more than my law firm. It symbolizes our love and vows.

I tried to endure it but it was too much. With no other choice, I pulled it out, heaving a sigh of relief as I placed the ring down at the side.

“I'm sorry, ma'am, but the card declined,” the waiter said politely, handing me the card.

I stared at the card. This was the card I gave to Ben. It was for our joint account. It had over twenty million the last I checked. Why then would it decline for just a million dollar bill?

I took out my debit card and handed it over, but the waiter returned with the same information. “Are you sure there's nothing wrong with the machine?” I asked calmly.

“I assure you, ma'am, our machine works perfectly,” the waiter responded.

I sighed, taking out my credit card. “Use this then,” I said.

With a single swipe, it was done. I relaxed, but I couldn't understand why none of our debit cards worked. “I'm so sorry, my love. It was an emergency, but I got it sorted,” Ben said, taking a seat.

He looked disheveled, but I didn't think much about it. “Ben, I tried using our debit cards, but they all didn't go through. Why?” I said.

Ben smiled nervously. “I should have told you. I borrowed a little money for an important investment,” he said.

“And you needed forty-five million?” I asked, shocked.

“Baby,” he took my hand, rubbing it. “It's just forty-five million. You make more than that a month. Plus, you said you'll help me with my investments.”

“I didn't think you'll need that much in a go,” I said.

“C'mon baby, are you going to be stingy with money now?”

“I'm just-”

“It's your birthday. It's our anniversary. Don't ruin our date. We'll talk about it later, okay?”

I stared at Ben for a moment. This was the first time he had done something like this. He must have his reasons. I should not have acted out. I nodded, apologetic. “I'm sorry. I was just a little worried. You didn't tell me about it,” I said.

He pulled away. “Yes, I wanted to surprise you with the profits. You're not mad, right?”

I shook my head, giving him a smile. “I can't be,”

“Did you get the bill?” he asked, and I nodded.

His eyes landed on my bare fingers and then on the ring on the side. I saw the panic in his eyes as he sat up. “Why did you take off your ring?” he asked.

“I felt itchy. My finger is so red already,” I raised my finger, showing him the reddish spot around my ring finger.

He held it, then reached for the ring with a napkin. “It must be dirty,” he said, wiping down the ring with both hands holding onto the ring.

“I actually thought of that, but it has kept on itching for days. I think it even got worse with each clean. Maybe, I should take it to a jeweler,” I said.

“No need. I'll handle it, but you'll have to put it on for now,” he said, taking my hand to slide it in.

But just a little contact and my finger felt like it was on fire. I pulled my hand away, shaking my head. “Maybe later,” I smiled, softly, rubbing my finger.

It almost felt like it would take my finger in seconds. It made me wonder if it would have become worse if I didn't take it off earlier.

Ben stood up and stared at me without a word. The look in his eyes made my heart skip a beat. In over ten years of being with him, he has never looked at me that way.

“Be-Ben?” I stammered as he walked away.

I shot up in my seat, panicked. “Benja...”

I paused when he stopped in the middle of the room and spun around. “Benjamin?” I said, taking a step forward.

He dropped on one knee, his lips crooked.

I reluctantly took a seat, taking in a deep breath. “You think I’ll harm you, don’t you?” she said, smiling.“Should I not think so?” I asked.“You should,” she said, nodding as her smile disappeared. “I don’t like you so much.”Funny she almost had me fooled that she might have liked me even though it was little. “Why pretend then?” I asked. Her smile returned. “I never did. I wanted to help my son. You interpreted it as pretense but it was an act of kindness on my part.”“What does this have to do with King? What does he want from me? What do you want from me?”“I don’t get involve in my son’t business. He chose you for reasons I am not obligated to share with you but what I want from you…” she paused, grabbing a file then tossed it on the table.I gave her a glance before picking up the file. “This is the agreeme

Lucille's POV My head ached. Bad. I groaned, turning to my side but hissed as my head made contact with the pillow underneath. That snapped me out of the darkness that engulfed me.I fluttered my eyes open to a room I didn’t recognize. I lazily turned to the side until it dawned on me what I had just seen. Quickly, I sat up, darting my eyes around.I knew this place. King had brought me here last time. I whipped my head to the side, staring at the bathroom door. If he was inside, I had a few minutes to get the fuck out of here.I didn’t like being in this room and recalling what had happened the last time, I didn’t want to get inbetween all of it. Until I remembered why I had passed out. That strawberry scent wasn’t here to make me feel better, it was to snap me unconscious. Josephine did it. That smile told me everything I needed to know.My things were kept neatly on the chair and I snatched them heading out the door. Fortunately, there was no one as I stepped out. When I spotted t

Lucille’s POV“Your fucking den?” I asked, snapping my eyes from the building we were parked at and the man who sat beside me.“What is the meaning of this?” I asked.I swallowed, watching him stare at me with a blank expression. “You’re safe,” he said.“Safe?” That word was close to making me laugh but I was so frightened to do so. “This place is not permitted to just anyone, especially not me. Why would you bring me here? Was this some kind of test? Or a way to kill me?”“You need to stop thinking I’ll kill you, Lucille.”“You need to try acting like you wouldn’t,” I retorted. “There is a little party going on in there. I brought you in as my date.”“Am I supposed to be happy about that?” My eyes narrowed at him.“They wouldn’t dare attack you when you’re with me.”“I love that you are confident in what you think your people would do but I won’t be with you every single time. How do you expect to protect me then?”“You’ll understand once we get in,” he said, stepping out of the car

Lucille's POV The document landed on the coffee table with a slap. “Thank you again,” I said to Mathew, my phone pressed to my ear as I plopped on the couch with a sigh.“It’s okay, love. I don't mind letting it go, after all, we got a few deals from it,” he said.“I know, but it doesn't change the effect it still had on your business, and still ready to let it go,” I said.“If you really want to appreciate me, let's go out for a drink tomorrow. It's been a while we hung out.”I've been busy for so long I barely interacted with friends. Katherine came around often, and it pulled me out of my work mode. Now, I needed to step out for some time. I agreed before hanging up, staring into space. I left for my room, tossed my bag to the side, took off my clothes, and laid on my back, arms spread, staring at the ceiling.I knew I should have been patient but I realized I didn’t need to always run to King. I was strong enough to handle my headaches on my own. Just this once, I’ll let Benjamin

King’s POVMy thumb grazed the side of her neck in circles. Her fear was quickly replaced with something else. Something I always loved seeing in those beautiful eyes of hers. And I liked them even more when it became defiant, hiding what truly went on in that dirty mind of hers.“What are you doing?” she asked, wrapping her fingers around my wrist. Not pulling, just keeping it there. A touch I was pleased to have.My other hand came around her waist, bringing her even closer to me. She gasped at the movement, pressing into me. “Let go,” she said but didn’t struggle to get free.If she did, she would be out of my grip in seconds. “You wanted answers but from the look of things,” I tucked her hair behind her ears, leaning in. “It seems you already have the answers to that.”She reacted to that —frozen in place for a second. However, she swiped my hand away, stepping back. “I don’t know what you are talking about,” she said.I pulled her back into me. Having her close to me has soon tur

Lucille's POV “I called him in,” Josephine said.“I don't need him here,” King said, without turning around.I blinked and it wasn't Benjamin. He handed over a jewelry box to Josephine before she waved him out of the office.King finally turned around, the safe shut. He held a wooden box but I couldn't let my guard down just yet.I took a cautious step back as King drew closer. However, that didn't stop him. He got close, his eyes locked to my face. Only when he was an inch close to me did he look at the box he held.“Open it,” he said.“Why?” I asked.“You want answers, explanations, they start here.”I briefly glanced at Josephine who looked disinterested. With shaky hands, I opened the box. I expected a lot of things but what was in it made me pause.I raised my head at King before taking out one of the many ring boxes. In it was what I guessed it was.“My wedding ring,” I muttered.I grabbed another and it was the same thing. I tried to take it out but King held my hand. “You can
