The line he won’t cross…yet

Damien does not leave quietly.

I am in the foyer when the driver brings the car around. Adrian stands near the door, arms crossed, expression carved from ice. Kai is present as well—Adrian must have asked him to stay. The three men form a silent triangle while two staff members carry Damien’s bags outside.

Damien himself looks completely unbothered. He adjusts his cuffs, glances at the waiting car, then turns to Adrian.

“You’re making a mistake,” he says mildly. “Removing me doesn’t remove the problem.”

Adrian’s voice is flat. “The only problem in this house right now is you.”

Damien’s eyes slide to me. The look lasts only a second, but it carries the weight of every night I left the door unlocked. Then he smiles, small and private.

“I’ll see you at the gala,” he says to no one in particular. “All of you.”

He walks out. The car door closes. The engine fades down the driveway.

For a moment the house feels larger and quieter than it has in weeks.

Adrian exhales through his nose. “It’s done.”

Kai glances at me, then at Adrian. “For now.”

Adrian’s gaze sharpens. “Meaning?”

Kai doesn’t answer directly. He only says, “Keep an eye on her,” and walks toward the study.

I feel Adrian’s attention settle on me like a physical weight.

“Upstairs,” he says quietly. “We need to talk.”

My stomach drops. I follow him anyway.

In the study he closes the door and leans back against it, blocking the exit without looking like he’s trying to. The room feels smaller than usual.

“I’ve been patient,” he begins, voice low. “I’ve asked. I’ve watched. I’ve given you space. That ends now.”

I stay silent.

Adrian pushes off the door and walks toward me slowly. “Damien didn’t want to leave. He only agreed because I made it clear the alternative was worse. That tells me whatever is happening between the two of you is serious enough that he didn’t want it examined in the open.”

He stops a few feet away. Close enough that I have to tip my head back.

“I’m going to ask one more time,” he says. “And I want the truth. Has Damien touched you?”

The words sit between us like a live wire.

I could end it here. I could tell him everything—the unlocked door, the nights, the names I said while another man was inside me. The confession sits on my tongue, heavy and ready.

Instead the old fear wins.

“No,” I whisper.

Adrian’s eyes close for a brief second. When he opens them again, the disappointment in them is worse than anger.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not—”

“Don’t.” The single word is sharp enough to cut. He turns away, running a hand through his hair, then faces me again. “I can see it every time he looks at you. I can see it in the way you’ve been moving through this house like you’re carrying something that hurts. And I can see it in the fact that Kai is suddenly acting like your personal bodyguard.”

My throat tightens.

Adrian steps closer. His voice drops. “I have spent years keeping every inappropriate thought about you locked down so tightly I almost convinced myself they didn’t exist. And now I find out my own uncle may have crossed a line I never allowed myself to approach.”

The confession lands harder than any accusation.

For one reckless second I want to close the remaining distance and tell him the thoughts were never only his. That I have wanted him longer and more desperately than I have ever wanted anyone. That every time Damien touched me I was still thinking of him.

I don’t.

Adrian searches my face for another long moment, then steps back as if the space is the only thing keeping him in control.

“The gala is in three days,” he says, voice controlled again. “You will attend. You will stay where I can see you. And if Damien so much as stands too close to you that night, I will remove him from this family myself.”

He opens the door.

“Get some rest, Aria. You look like you haven’t slept in a week.”

I walk past him on unsteady legs.

In the hallway I lean against the wall and try to breathe.

Damien is gone from the house, but the threat traveled with him.

Kai’s deadline is still ticking.

And Adrian is closer to the truth than he has ever been—close enough that one more hard push will break everything open.

I go upstairs, lock my door, and sit on the edge of the bed with my phone in my hand.

A new message appears from the same unknown number.

Three days. The apartment is temporary. The gala is not. Sleep well.

I delete it, but the words stay.

Three days.

And the line Adrian refuses to cross is the same one Damien has already erased.

I turn off the light and stare into the dark, knowing that removing Damien from the house only moved the explosion somewhere harder to see coming.

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Deadline

The day of Kai’s deadline arrives with no warning shots.I wake up knowing that by tonight, either I give him something that satisfies him, or he walks into Adrian’s study and starts talking. The knowledge sits in my chest like a stone.Downstairs, Adrian is already working. He glances up when I enter the kitchen, eyes assessing me the way they have every morning since Damien left.“You look worse,” he says bluntly.“I didn’t sleep.”He sets his pen down. “After the gala I’m sending you to the lake house for a few days. Alone. No Damien. No visitors. Just quiet.”The offer is meant to be protective. It feels like another form of control.“I have classes.”“You’ll manage.” His tone leaves no room for argument. “One more day, Aria. Then we deal with whatever this is.”I nod because I have no other option.Kai arrives mid-morning. He doesn’t bother with small talk. He finds me in the library and closes the door hard enough that the sound echoes.“Last day,” he says. “Have you ended it?”

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Two days

The house feels wrong without Damien in it.Not safer. Just quieter in a way that makes every other sound louder. I wake up to the knowledge that the immediate threat has been moved across the city, yet the pressure has only changed shape. Adrian’s eyes follow me more closely. Kai checks in with short, careful messages. And my phone remains a silent threat of its own.Two days until the gala.I come downstairs to find Adrian already at the dining table, reviewing documents. He looks like he slept as little as I did. When he sees me, he sets the papers aside.“Sit,” he says. “Eat.”I sit. The silence between us is heavier than usual. After several minutes he speaks without looking up from his coffee.“I spoke to Damien this morning. He’ll attend the gala. Alone. He understands the boundaries.”The way he says understands makes it clear the conversation was not polite.I nod, not trusting my voice.Adrian finally looks at me. “Kai will be with us the entire evening. You will not leave m

Instead I find the house unnervingly calm.Adrian is in the dining room reviewing something on a tablet. He looks up when I enter, and the concern in his eyes is sharper than yesterday.“You didn’t eat last night,” he says. “Sit. Eat something now.”It isn’t a suggestion. I sit. He watches me force down toast and coffee like the act itself is proof of something. After a long silence he speaks again, voice low. “I’ve asked Damien to stay at the city apartment until after the gala.”My head snaps up.Adrian’s expression is unreadable. “He agreed. Mostly.”“Mostly?”“He said he would consider it.” Adrian sets the tablet down. “I don’t like the way he looks at you. I don’t like the way you’ve bee

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Consequences

I barely sleep.Every sound in the hallway makes my body go rigid. I keep expecting the door handle to turn again, or for Damien to simply stop pretending he needs permission. When gray morning light finally seeps through the curtains, my eyes are dry and my nerves are scraped raw.I unlock the door only when I hear movement downstairs. The kitchen is empty at first. I make coffee with shaking hands and try to steady my breathing. The decision to lock him out last night feels both necessary and reckless. I can still hear his voice through the wood: Wrong choice, Aria.Footsteps approach. It isn’t Damien.Kai walks in, already dressed, expression tight. He stops when he sees me.“You look like you didn’t sleep,” he says.“I didn’t.”He closes the distance between us, voice low. “Did something happen last night?”I hesitate too long.Kai’s eyes darken. “Aria.”Before I can answer, Adrian enters. The next morning everything feels one breath away from snapping.I come downstairs late on purpose, hoping the kitchen will be empty. It isn’t.Adrian, Damien, and Kai are all there. The three of them stand in a loose triangle near the island. The air is thick enough to taste. Adrian’s expression is carved from stone. Damien looks almost amused. Kai’s jaw is tight, his eyes flicking to me the second I appear.Conversation dies.Adrian is the first to speak. “We were just discussing the gala next Friday.”My stomach drops. The annual Rosenhall charity gala. Hundreds of people. Cameras. Family on display.“You’re expected to attend,” Adrian continues, eyes on me. “All of us are.”Damien smiles into his coffee. “Should be entertaining.”Kai says nothing, but the look he gives me is clear: This is a bad idea.I force a nod. “Of course.”Adrian’s gaze lingers on my face, then drops briefly to the high collar of my sweater. Something dark moves behind his eyes before he shuts it down.“I ha
