SIERRA

I look at the moon casting long shadows across the guest room floor. I was grateful for this room that Logan allowed me to occupy alone.

He claimed it was to give me "space to heal" after the accident, but tonight, the silence felt heavy with secrets.

I lay on my side while staring at the moon, but all I could see was the other man's face.

Alessandro.

The way he had whispered "Sierra" didn't sound like a lie. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the shattered look in his gaze. The raw, bleeding hope of a man who had seen a ghost.

My heart hammered frantically, which made my skin itch. Why did my body react to a stranger while it recoiled from the man who claimed to be my husband?

I clutched the silk sheets, trying to summon a single memory. A smell, a sound, a touch, anything to bridge the gap between Airra and Sierra. I felt like I was standing on a thin, tightrope over an abyss.

While thinking too much, I must have finally drifted into a light, restless doze, because the

SIERAI looked down as the bump had jarred a hidden spring-loaded compartment in the side of the desk. A small, shallow drawer had popped open just a few inches. My breath hitched.I glanced at the man who was narrowing his eyes, suspicious of the sound, but from his angle, the desk blocked his view of the secret drawer. I had seconds.I reached down with my fingers trembling so hard I could barely grip the contents. Inside wasn't money or jewelry. It was a small, charred leather wallet and a stack of folded documents. I pulled them out and tucked them behind the book I was holding."Madame?" the man called out, his tone feeling like a warning as he began to walk toward the desk."I'm just... the sun is too bright now," I stammered, frantically pulling the curtain closed instead of opening it, plunging my corner of the room into dimness. In the sudden shadows, I flipped open the charred wallet. My breath left me in a silent gasp. Inside was a driver’s license from New York St

SIERRA The silence in the hallway was heavy, broken only by my footsteps and the armed man behind me.He's tall and made even more imposing by the empty sleeve pinned neatly to his shoulder. He's following me as if I were a package that needed to be delivered from the dining hall to the bedroom without any dents.I walked with slowness as my heart hammered against my ribs. I kept my gaze fixed ahead, but my mind was mapping the corridors. Every turn was an opportunity, but the man was disciplined. He didn't hover, but I could feel his presence like a cold draft on the back of my neck.I needed to get away from the bedroom. The bedroom was a dead end.As we reached the base of the grand staircase, I stopped abruptly. The man didn't stumble, he stopped instantly. His one hand resting near his belt and his blue eyes tracking my every move with the mechanical precision of a hawk.I turned to face him. "I don't want to go back yet." He stared at me with his blank expression. "I wa

SierraThe silk sheets against my skin feel like a lie. Every morning for the past week, I have woken up in this room, dripping in gold and velvet, feeling like a trespasser in my own life.I reached back, my fingers grazing the thick gauze taped across my shoulder blades. I got off the bed and peed. When I got out of the bathroom, I noticed a note at the lampshade.‘I'll be in a business meeting. See you at lunch.’I crumpled the note and threw it harshly at the corner. He's out of the house. That means, I can wander around without being conscious of him. But I'm worried that his armed men will follow me around like a dog.He thinks the walls of this mansion are high enough to keep the truth out. He is wrong. I've gained enough strength to find out the truth. I should not let him lock me here like a prisoner.I looked at the door of the bedroom. Somewhere behind it, guards were stationed. If I was going to find Alessandro or if I was going to find myself, I couldn't just walk out

SIERRAAs soon as I stepped into the hall, the chandelier light blinded me. Still, I keep my back straight, though the silk of my gown feels like sandpaper against the ridges of the scar between my shoulder blades."Smile, Airra," Logan whispers as his hand slides across the small of my back. "You’re the envy of every man in this room."I force my lips to curve, even though I don’t remember being Airra. I don’t remember the car accident Logan describes. He says the metal twisted and scorched my skin until I was a blank slate of trauma. I only know the world he’s built for me. A gilded cage of a mansion, a wardrobe of expensive ghosts, and the silent, stone-faced men with holsters under their jackets who follow us everywhere. They call him Don and they call me Ma’am. I play along because dead men don’t speak, and I have a feeling that in Logan’s world, the truth is a lethal offense. He pulled me as we moved toward the balcony when the air in the room seemed to thin. He commanded me

ALESSANDRO "Step away, Alessandro. You’re frightening my wife."The word 'wife' made me want to cut off his tongue. I felt the roar of the fire return to my ears. I grabbed her wrist and pulled her to me. "Your wife? You pathetic worm. You’ve been scavenging in my shadow your whole life, but this? You think you can claim the Queen of Sicily because you found her in the fog?""Stop, please!" she cried out. It wasn't the scream of a woman caught between two lovers. It was the whimpering of an animal caught in a trap.I looked down at her hand. My fingers were digging into her pale skin. While Logan's hand clamped onto her other wrist.Between the two of us, she was being torn apart. Her face contorted, a sharp wince of pure agony crossing her features as she tried to pull away from both of us.The sight of her pain acted like a bucket of ice water on my rage. I had spent ten days bleeding for her, praying for her, and now I was the one hurting her. My fingers slowly unfurled, l
