Chapter 101

Aurelia

I kept my hands lying completely still against the blanket over my lap, watching all.

They looked exhausted. Not the ordinary kind of tired that comes from a long day at work, but the heavy, worn-down kind that settles deep into a person’s skin when they haven't been sleeping.

All four of them had their sleeves rolled up, their ties loosened or gone entirely, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and rain.

"You're awake," Dreyven said, stopping a few feet away from my wheel

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   THEY WERE SO EASY TO FOOL

Chapter 102AureliaThe quiet after dinner was the heavy, awkward kind that usually settled over a room when nobody quite knew who was supposed to speak first. The low trays had been cleared away by Rosa, leaving only the five of us sitting around the carpet in the dimly lit living room. Drayton was still sitting cross-legged on the floor, leaning back against the front of the couch with his long legs stretched out, looking entirely too satisfied with himself for having successfully fed me half a plate of chicken without choking me. Dreyden was back in his chair, tapping away silently on his phone with that crisp, razor-sharp focus that made him look like he was running a country, while Dreyven sat on the edge of the sofa near my left shoulder, his hands resting on his knees, watching my every breath. Then Dreylen, who had been leaning against the far wall in absolute silence for the last twenty minutes, finally shifted his weight and cleared his throat."Which part of the house do

All four of them had their sleeves rolled up, their ties loosened or gone entirely, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and rain."You're awake," Dreyven said, stopping a few feet away from my wheelchair. He searched my face immediately, looking for whatever mood I was in today."I've been awake for three days," I said, keeping my voice entirely flat. "Not that any of you would know."Drayton winced slightly, while Dreylen rubbed the back of his neck with a quiet sigh."We had to clear our schedules," Dreyden said smoothly, taking a step forward. He was the organized one who always spoke like he was running a board meeting even when he was standing in a living room. "If we're going to ta

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   FUCK! FINALLY!

Chapter 100AureliaDrayton stood in front of me with the plate still in his hand. I looked at the food, then at him."I said I'm not hungry.""And I said you need to eat." There was something almost ridiculous about the way he said it, like he could argue me into having an appetite if he just kept insisting long enough."I don't want it." He frowned. "Why?""Because I don't.""That's not a reason.""It is when I'm the one who's supposed to eat it." He stared at me for a second, clearly not knowing what to do with that answer. Then, with a sigh, he pulled the chair beside me closer and sat down."Fine. I'll sit here until you eat." I raised an eyebrow."You're going to sit there?""Yes.""For how long?""As long as it takes." I almost smiled. He really was stubborn."I could be here all night.""I have nowhere else to be." That was irritating. Not because I believed him but because some small part of me actually did. I looked away from him and back at the plate."I don't want it.""Y

Chapter 99The lift stopped before he could answer. I let out a breath I hadn't noticed I was holding. He wheeled me into the hallway, and I noticed the difference immediately — quieter up here, more private, more space. He pushed me toward a door on the left, and before I could ask, he answered."This isn't your room.""Then whose is it?""No one's."I looked inside anyway. A huge bed, floor-to-ceiling windows, a sitting area, a television mounted on the wall, a wardrobe standing mostly empty. Beautiful. I turned back to him."Then why bring me here?""I want you in the bigger room.""There's a bigger one?""End of the hall."I looked down the hallway, wondering just how big that could possibly be if this wasn't it. "Then why stop here?""Because yours wasn't ready." He nodded toward the hall. "Staff are moving everything from downstairs... medical equipment, the things the nurses asked for." His eyes flicked to the bed behind me. "Including the bed the doctor recommended. This isn't

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   MAYBE LIFE CHANGED ME

Chapter 98 AureliaI watched the chef carry the plates away, and even after the kitchen doors swung shut behind her, I could still feel Dreyven's eyes on me.He'd been quiet since we arrived...unusually quiet... and somehow that silence irritated me more than his questions ever did. I kept my gaze fixed on the kitchen, pretending to care what the staff were doing in there, because the last thing I needed was for him to study my face and see something I wasn't ready to show him.Especially not now.He still believed I was broken. That was exactly what I needed him to believe."Are you really hungry?" His voice came quietly from beside me. I glanced at him for a second, then looked away again."No." His gaze lingered a beat too long. "You haven't eaten since we left the hospital.""I said I'm not hungry."Something flickered across his expression... subtle, the kind of thing most people would miss. I didn't. He was worried, but not in the panicked way people usually got. It was the

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   THIS WASN'T GOING TO BE EASY

Chapter 97DreyvenI stepped out into the hallway...after I and the doctor had finished speaking in his office...and checked my phone out of habit more than anything else, and that's when I saw it. Our group chat had over thirty messages waiting, all of them from the last twenty minutes.*Ven what is going on**Did you really say that**Somebody explain right now**Ven answer your phone*I didn't type anything back. Some things needed a voice behind them, not just words on a screen. I hit call instead, and all three of them picked up before the second ring even finished."Why will you do that?" Drayton's voice came through first, loud and fast, the way it always did when he was worried and trying to sound angry about it instead."Is she really coming?" Dreylen asked, right on top of him."When is she coming?" Dreyden's voice cut through both of theirs, steady but not calm, not really. All three questions landed almost at once, tangled together so close I could barely tell where one
