Chapter 159

"I was four months old when the Warrens got me." His voice has gone flat, careful, like a man crossing ice. "There's a gap."

"We know," Dreyden says quietly.

Elias stands up. He walks past us without a word, through a door at the back, and we hear his boots on stairs.

Nobody speaks. Drayton stares at his bottle. Dreylen has both hands pressed together between his knees. Dreyden is looking at the pegboard like he's memorising it.

When Elias comes back he's carrying a biscuit tin, de

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   JULIAN CROSS IS EXPECTING US

CHAPTER 160DREYVENWhen I walk back into the garage, Drayton is laughing. Not loudly. Not the kind of laugh that makes his whole body move, but enough to make Elias smile as he pours tea into four chipped mugs. For a moment, I stand by the entrance and watch them.Drayton is still pale, and there's a tiredness around his eyes that wasn't there before the fight, but he's sitting upright now, listening to Elias talk about a customer who brought him a broken antique table and expected him to repair it for the price of a new one."Some people think restoring furniture means rubbing polish on wood," Elias says, shaking his head. "They don't understand that sometimes you have to take the whole thing apart before you can make it right again.""Sounds familiar," Drayton mutters.Elias gives him a curious look. "Does it?""Don't mind him," Dreylen says. "He's been in a terrible mood.""I nearly died," Drayton replies."And somehow you're still annoying.""That's because I'm talented." Elias l

Dreyden is looking at the pegboard like he's memorising it.When Elias comes back he's carrying a biscuit tin, dented, the paint worn to bare metal at the corners. He sets it on the bench and puts his hand flat on the lid."Mum gave me this the week before she died. She said there was a box under her bed. She said, Someone might come for you one day. Don't be angry with them." His thumb moves on the lid. "Then she said, Be angry with the nurse. I thought it was the morphine.""The nurse?" I say."That's all she'd tell me." He opens the tin. There's a folded adoption decree from a private agency called Call

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   THEY SEARCHED FOR MONTHS

CHAPTER 158DREYVENMy phone buzzes in the cup holder for the ninth time since we left the car park.I don't have to look. The screen is lit up in the corner of my eye, one word in white letters. Aurelia. Then it goes dark, then lights again.I keep both hands on the wheel. The road is wet and the traffic is thick.I give it all my attention, the brake lights ahead, the lane markings, the wipers sweeping once, twice. The tenth call comes.I pick up the phone at a red light. My thumb finds her contact. The photo is one I took myself, months ago, in the garage. She's laughing at something Drayton said, with a smear of grease across her cheek where she'd wiped her face with a dirty hand. She looks about nineteen. She looks like someone who has never hurt anybody.I press Block this caller. The screen asks if I'm sure. I no press yes before I can think. The light turns green. Behind me a horn sounds. I put the phone face down and drive."You okay?" Dreylen asks from the back seat."Fine.

I told Julian to stop. I told him to wait...""Then why is my brother in a hospital bed?"She doesn't answer. Through the gap I hear something small and wet. Crying, the kind where a person is trying not to make noise."I don't want to hear it," Dreyven says. "Any of it. Stay away from him. Stay away from all of us. As far as I'm concerned, you don't exist."A beat. Then something I've never heard come out of Dreyven in twenty-seven years."Please don't make me say it again."The door swings open. He comes in, closes it properly this time, and the latch clicks. He walks to the chair beside my bed and sits. He puts his face in both hands. He doesn't say anything. That's worse than any shouting.I look at the top of his head. His hair is a mess. He's the oldest of us by three minutes and he has spent every one o

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   YOU HAD A CHOICE

CHAPTER 156DRAYTONThe door clicks shut behind her. That's the only sound. No slam, no scream. A small plastic click, and the monitor beside my head keeps counting like nothing happened.Nobody speaks. Dreyven stands where he stood when he told her to stay away, his fists opening and closing at his sides. Dreyden has his back to us at the window, his phone pressed flat against his chest. Dreylen hasn't moved from the door. He's staring at the handle like it might turn again.I look at the ceiling. There are sixty-three little holes in the tile above my bed. I know because I've counted them three times since she said it.I was working with Julian. Her voice shook when she said it. I keep hearing the shake, as if a shaky voice is proof of something. As if scared and sorry are the same thing. My right hand is balled in the blanket. I open it and look at my palm. There's a row of little crescents where my nails dug in.I'm supposed to be thinking about the fight. The punch I never saw,
