Chapter 3

Author: Ten Thousand Miles
There were two weeks left until the wedding, and the estate was already overflowing with preparations.

Boxes of decorations and supplies were stacked in nearly every corner, while Tristan seemed determined to turn the ceremony into the social event of the year, inviting nearly half of the city's high society.

I was sitting in the living room sorting through the guest list when he came over and placed a gold-embossed invitation in front of me.

"Take a look at the design. Jasmine helped choose it," he said.

I glanced at the invitation. Our names were printed across the front, but the faint watermark behind them was a pattern of hibiscus flowers—Jasmine's favorite.

"It's nice." I set it aside and went back to checking the names on the guest list.

Tristan sat beside me and casually flipped through the papers. "As for your parents, I had Tomas arrange their flights and hotel."

Then he added, as though it were a minor detail, "There wasn't enough room at the head table, so I put them at the second table with Jasmine's parents. That shouldn't be a problem, right?"

The pen in my hand paused for a moment before I calmly marked another name off the list.

"That's fine," I replied.

Tristan seemed surprised by how readily I agreed. He raised an eyebrow, studying my expression intently. "You really don't mind? You would've thrown a fit about this before."

I set down the pen and looked at him. "You've thought of everything, so I have nothing to complain about."

I wouldn't be there anyway.

A few days ago, I'd already called my parents and told them the wedding was off. I asked them not to make the trip, and although they were confused, they respected my decision.

Tristan studied me in silence, his expression growing darker and harder to read. Then, without warning, he reached out, pulled me into his arms, and held me close.

"I'm really glad to see you like this," he murmured, resting his chin on top of my head. "We used to fight all the time. You were always suspicious of Jasmine and me. I'm glad you've finally learned to be sensible."

His arms tightened around me as he continued, "As long as you stay obedient, you'll always have your place as Mrs. Webster."

The familiar scent of his icy cologne filled my lungs, and nausea rose in my stomach. I forced it down and lightly patted his back.

"I know."

...

That afternoon, Tristan left for the office.

As soon as he was gone, I went upstairs and pulled a black suitcase from beneath the bed. Inside were a few ordinary changes of clothes and the modest amount of cash I'd saved over the years.

Everything Tristan had given me—the designer bags, the jewelry, and other expensive gifts—had already been sold and converted into cash on an untraceable debit card.

It was more than enough to buy a small cottage in Anchorage, where I could spend the rest of my days in peace.

Just as I placed the book containing my train ticket at the bottom of the suitcase, Jasmine's voice came from the doorway.

"Sierra, are you packing?"

Startled, I snapped the suitcase shut and stood up.

Jasmine leaned against the doorframe, her gaze sweeping over the luggage.

"Tristan said the new house will be fully furnished and ready by next week. We're moving soon, so I figured maybe you were packing early."

"Yeah."

I nodded, playing along with her assumption.

She wandered into the room and casually picked up a diamond necklace from my vanity.

"This is gorgeous. Tristan really spoils you."

Her voice was full of admiration, but her eyes were openly provocative.

"You like it?" I asked. "Then take it."

She froze. "What? But this is the engagement necklace Tristan gave you."

"Since you like it so much, keep it." I shrugged. "I rarely wear it anyway."

Then I walked past her and left the room.

"Sierra!" She turned after me, her voice sharpening. "What games are you playing? Do you really think acting cold and detached is going to make Tristan pay more attention to you?"

I stopped and looked back. "Everything you want, I'm giving you."

My gaze settled on her. "Tristan included."

She stood frozen in place, completely speechless.

...

That evening, Tristan came home.

The moment he saw the diamond necklace around Jasmine's neck, his expression darkened.

"Who told you to wear that?" he demanded sharply.

Jasmine shrank back. "It... was Sierra. She gave it to me."

Tristan turned on me, anger flashing in his eyes. "Sierra, what the hell is this? You just handed my engagement gift to someone else like it meant nothing?"

I sat on the sofa and calmly took a sip of water.

"It's just a necklace. Surely, you're not that stingy, Mr. Webster?"

"Is this about the necklace itself?"

Tristan strode over, snatched the glass from my hand, and slammed it onto the coffee table.

That night, a blizzard swept through Anchorage. In the middle of the night, violent pounding on the gate woke me.I threw on a coat and stepped outside. Through the narrow opening in the door, I saw Tristan kneeling in the snow, dressed in nothing but a thin hospital gown. His face was burning with fever, and every breath came with a harsh, violent cough. Dario Cooper and Chad were trying desperately to pull him back toward the SUV."Sierra..." Tristan clung to the gate, his fingernails digging into the wood hard enough to leave bloody marks. "Please, just let me see her. I only want to see her one last time."He broke free of Chad's grip and slammed his forehead against the gate. "Sierra, I'll pay for everything I've done with my life. Please... forgive me."I stood on the other side of the gate and listened to him beg, but I had no intention of opening it. In the end, I just turned around, went back inside, and switched off the lights.Eventually, his friends managed to drag h

"Sick?"Tristan repeated the word under his breath, as if he couldn't believe he'd heard it. "Sierra, don't say things like that just because you're angry."He reached for my arm again, his voice unexpectedly humble and pleading. "I know you've been hurt. You can hit me, yell at me, and do whatever you want... Just come home with me.""I'm not going back." I stepped away before he could touch me. "I'm doing just fine here in Anchorage. I have a job, I have friends, and I sleep peacefully every night."I pointed to the weathered little gate a short distance away. "It isn't anything like Lakeside Estate, but it's my home now. Please stop interfering with my life."I walked past him and pulled out my key to unlock the gate."Sierra!"His voice cracked with desperation behind me. "Do you really think you can hide here and get rid of me? If I wanted to, I could buy every house on this street. I could even buy the grocery store where you work."My hand pushing the door open paused. I

Sierra's POVWinter in Anchorage was brutal, with snow burying the streets and piling against the rooftops.I rented a small one-story cottage on the edge of town. There was an apple tree in the yard, and every morning I scattered a handful of birdseed beneath its branches for the sparrows that braved the cold.Three months had passed since I left Eldeanford, and in all that time, I hadn't logged into any of my old social media accounts or contacted a single person from my former life.I found a job as a cashier at a neighborhood grocery store. The pay wasn't much, but it was enough to cover the basics and leave me with enough money to buy fresh meat and vegetables without having to count every dollar. The hearing in my left ear had continued to deteriorate. The doctor told me the damage from the medication was permanent, but I wasn't particularly upset about it. Without all those insincere voices filling my head, the world had become quieter, calmer, and somehow easier to bear.

Surveillance footage from all over the city had piled up on Tristan's desk, yet after three straight days and nights without sleep, he still hadn't found a single useful lead.Tomas finally walked into the office, looking almost as exhausted as his boss."Sir, we found her!"Tristan's head snapped up, his bloodshot eyes locking onto the assistant."Where?""Ms. Perry didn't take a plane, nor did she take a high-speed route." Tomas swallowed hard, handing over a still image from a security camera. "She took a long-distance budget train. Her destination is Anchorage, Alaska."Tristan stared at the grainy image of Sierra sitting by the window, looking thin and worn. A sharp ache went through his chest. She had always hated long train rides more than anything, complaining about the cramped seats, the endless stops, and the stale air.She would never go anywhere unless he booked her first class or at least a private car. Yet now, just to get away from him, she'd chosen the cheapest

The wedding march had long since faded out, leaving an awkward silence hanging over the ballroom. The officiant stood onstage, clearly unsure whether to continue, while guests whispered among themselves and kept stealing uneasy glances at Tristan, who stood alone at the end of the aisle. He was dressed in an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, a white boutonniere pinned neatly to his lapel, but the composure he was known for had completely disappeared. His face was dark and tense, and his jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle kept twitching. His childhood friend, Chad Thornton, pushed through the crowd and whispered, "Tristan, what happened? Where is Sierra? Tomas went to pick her up, but nobody was at the estate."Tristan tightened his grip on his phone until his knuckles turned white."Her phone is off, and her location is gone!" He gritted his teeth, squeezing each word through the gaps. "She played me!"Another friend, Cole Sloan, edged closer. "Is this because you went af

A shard of glass flew across the room and nicked the back of my hand, leaving a thin line of blood.I looked down at it and felt nothing. The heavy medication I'd been given during my year at the treatment center hadn't just dulled my nerves; it had left my sense of pain strangely muted.Tristan noticed the blood too. The anger vanished from his face, replaced almost instantly by concern."Why didn't you dodge?"He grabbed my hand, snatched a towel from the coffee table, and pressed it against the cut. His fingers trembled slightly."It's just a scratch. It doesn't hurt." I brushed it off, trying to pull my hand away."Don't move." His voice was firm, with a trace of irritation beneath it.Then he turned toward Jasmine, who was standing nearby with tears in her eyes."Take off the necklace, give it back to Sierra, and go upstairs," he demanded.Jasmine slowly unclasped the necklace, placed it on the table, and ran upstairs with her face covered. Once we were alone, Tristan ca
