Chapter 2

Author: Ten Thousand Miles
"The waistline on this gown is too elaborate. Simplify it."

Tristan sat on the plush sofa in the VIP fitting room, scrolling through the designer's sketches on a tablet.

"But this is the exact style Ms. Perry chose," the designer said carefully. "She told us she loved the vintage train."

"Her taste has changed," Tristan replied without looking up. "Make it clean and simple. Jasmine mentioned the other day that minimalist styles look more elegant."

I sat in front of the vanity while the fitting assistant measured my waist and shoulders. I heard every word, but I didn't object.

"Sierra, what do you think?"

He finally looked up, though the question felt more like a formality than an invitation for my opinion.

"Whatever you think is best," I said, looking at my pale, gaunt reflection in the mirror.

Tristan turned off the tablet and came up behind me, resting both hands on my shoulders. "You used to love those flashy, over-the-top dresses, but something simple suits you much better now."

I met his eyes in the mirror. There was a smug sense of possession in his gaze, as though he were pleased with the person he'd turned me into.

I gave a small nod. "Yeah. You're right."

Once the fitting was over, Tristan received a phone call and glanced at his watch.

"I've got something to take care of," he told me. "I'll have the chauffeur take you home."

"Okay," I agreed.

He leaned down and kissed my cheek. "I'll take you to that French bistro you love tonight."

I knew Jasmine had a follow-up appointment at the hospital for her stomach problems that day, and I knew perfectly well where Tristan would really be spending his time.

Instead of waiting for his chauffeur, I stepped outside and hailed a cab downtown.

At a luxury consignment store, the manager stared at the collection I'd laid out on the table—limited-edition bags, luxury jewelry, and several other pieces I'd accumulated over the years.

"Ms. Perry, are you sure you're selling all of this?" he asked, barely able to hide his excitement. "These are limited editions. And this necklace in particular—Mr. Webster won it for you at an auction. It made the papers."

"Yes, I'm sure." I took the glass of water one of the employees handed me and added, "Price everything according to your standard rate. The sooner it's done, the better. Transfer the money to this card."

I handed him an anonymous debit card I'd arranged through an old friend under an alias. Once the transaction was complete, I walked out of the store.

The bright sunlight outside made my eyes sting so badly that I had to squint. During the year I'd spent in treatment, I'd been kept inside windowless rooms for so long that I'd become painfully sensitive to bright light.

My phone buzzed with a text message.

Tristan: [Canceling dinner tonight. Jasmine's stomach is acting up again, so I'm staying with her. Get something to eat yourself.]

I replied: [Okay.]

I put my phone away and walked into a nearby diner, where I ordered a simple bowl of pasta.

By the time I returned to the estate, it was already eight at night.

The dining room was brightly lit, and Tristan and Jasmine were sitting together at the table surrounded by a lavish dinner.

"Sierra, you're back!" Jasmine set down her fork, flashing a sweet smile. "Tristan said those lobster rolls from the harbor are your favorite, so he had his assistant go all the way over there to pick some up for you. Come sit down and try one!"

Tristan gestured toward the plate. "Go wash your hands and eat."

I walked over and glanced at the lobster rolls. "I don't eat shellfish. I'm allergic."

The mood in the room instantly shifted.

Tristan's brows drew together. "Since when are you allergic to shellfish? Wasn't it your favorite?"

"That was before I went to treatment," I said, pulling out a chair to sit down. "In that center, I once ate some spoiled seafood and nearly went into anaphylactic shock. Ever since then, my body hasn't been able to tolerate shellfish."

Something flickered across Tristan's face. At the same time, Jasmine bit her lip awkwardly.

"I'm sorry, Sierra. I had no idea."

"It's fine. Ignorance isn't a crime."

I turned toward the stairs.

"Sierra," Tristan called after me, a trace of panic slipping into his voice. "Tomorrow, I'm taking you to the hospital for a full checkup."

"There's no need," I said without turning back. "I'm used to it."

That night, a blizzard swept through Anchorage. In the middle of the night, violent pounding on the gate woke me.I threw on a coat and stepped outside. Through the narrow opening in the door, I saw Tristan kneeling in the snow, dressed in nothing but a thin hospital gown. His face was burning with fever, and every breath came with a harsh, violent cough. Dario Cooper and Chad were trying desperately to pull him back toward the SUV."Sierra..." Tristan clung to the gate, his fingernails digging into the wood hard enough to leave bloody marks. "Please, just let me see her. I only want to see her one last time."He broke free of Chad's grip and slammed his forehead against the gate. "Sierra, I'll pay for everything I've done with my life. Please... forgive me."I stood on the other side of the gate and listened to him beg, but I had no intention of opening it. In the end, I just turned around, went back inside, and switched off the lights.Eventually, his friends managed to drag h

"Sick?"Tristan repeated the word under his breath, as if he couldn't believe he'd heard it. "Sierra, don't say things like that just because you're angry."He reached for my arm again, his voice unexpectedly humble and pleading. "I know you've been hurt. You can hit me, yell at me, and do whatever you want... Just come home with me.""I'm not going back." I stepped away before he could touch me. "I'm doing just fine here in Anchorage. I have a job, I have friends, and I sleep peacefully every night."I pointed to the weathered little gate a short distance away. "It isn't anything like Lakeside Estate, but it's my home now. Please stop interfering with my life."I walked past him and pulled out my key to unlock the gate."Sierra!"His voice cracked with desperation behind me. "Do you really think you can hide here and get rid of me? If I wanted to, I could buy every house on this street. I could even buy the grocery store where you work."My hand pushing the door open paused. I

Sierra's POVWinter in Anchorage was brutal, with snow burying the streets and piling against the rooftops.I rented a small one-story cottage on the edge of town. There was an apple tree in the yard, and every morning I scattered a handful of birdseed beneath its branches for the sparrows that braved the cold.Three months had passed since I left Eldeanford, and in all that time, I hadn't logged into any of my old social media accounts or contacted a single person from my former life.I found a job as a cashier at a neighborhood grocery store. The pay wasn't much, but it was enough to cover the basics and leave me with enough money to buy fresh meat and vegetables without having to count every dollar. The hearing in my left ear had continued to deteriorate. The doctor told me the damage from the medication was permanent, but I wasn't particularly upset about it. Without all those insincere voices filling my head, the world had become quieter, calmer, and somehow easier to bear.

Surveillance footage from all over the city had piled up on Tristan's desk, yet after three straight days and nights without sleep, he still hadn't found a single useful lead.Tomas finally walked into the office, looking almost as exhausted as his boss."Sir, we found her!"Tristan's head snapped up, his bloodshot eyes locking onto the assistant."Where?""Ms. Perry didn't take a plane, nor did she take a high-speed route." Tomas swallowed hard, handing over a still image from a security camera. "She took a long-distance budget train. Her destination is Anchorage, Alaska."Tristan stared at the grainy image of Sierra sitting by the window, looking thin and worn. A sharp ache went through his chest. She had always hated long train rides more than anything, complaining about the cramped seats, the endless stops, and the stale air.She would never go anywhere unless he booked her first class or at least a private car. Yet now, just to get away from him, she'd chosen the cheapest

The wedding march had long since faded out, leaving an awkward silence hanging over the ballroom. The officiant stood onstage, clearly unsure whether to continue, while guests whispered among themselves and kept stealing uneasy glances at Tristan, who stood alone at the end of the aisle. He was dressed in an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, a white boutonniere pinned neatly to his lapel, but the composure he was known for had completely disappeared. His face was dark and tense, and his jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle kept twitching. His childhood friend, Chad Thornton, pushed through the crowd and whispered, "Tristan, what happened? Where is Sierra? Tomas went to pick her up, but nobody was at the estate."Tristan tightened his grip on his phone until his knuckles turned white."Her phone is off, and her location is gone!" He gritted his teeth, squeezing each word through the gaps. "She played me!"Another friend, Cole Sloan, edged closer. "Is this because you went af

A shard of glass flew across the room and nicked the back of my hand, leaving a thin line of blood.I looked down at it and felt nothing. The heavy medication I'd been given during my year at the treatment center hadn't just dulled my nerves; it had left my sense of pain strangely muted.Tristan noticed the blood too. The anger vanished from his face, replaced almost instantly by concern."Why didn't you dodge?"He grabbed my hand, snatched a towel from the coffee table, and pressed it against the cut. His fingers trembled slightly."It's just a scratch. It doesn't hurt." I brushed it off, trying to pull my hand away."Don't move." His voice was firm, with a trace of irritation beneath it.Then he turned toward Jasmine, who was standing nearby with tears in her eyes."Take off the necklace, give it back to Sierra, and go upstairs," he demanded.Jasmine slowly unclasped the necklace, placed it on the table, and ran upstairs with her face covered. Once we were alone, Tristan ca
