The car suddenly felt too small for the both of us. Jace stayed stiff for some moments and my heart was pounding against my chest.

Was he dangerous? Does he harm people? Would he harm me now for finding out?

Jace leaned in, pinning me against the car door cutting my train of thoughts and I swallowed hard. He put his hand on the seat next to my head.

"Who sent you that?" he hissed.

"I don't know! It was an anonymous number!"

Jace’s grip on the seat tightened. I heard the leather groan.

"Show me." He ordered and I pulled out my phone with shaky hands, showing him the text.

Jace stared at the screen. His jaw was so tight I thought he might break a tooth. He snatched the phone from my hand and threw it onto the floor of the car.

"Forget you saw that," he said in a dangerous growl.

"I can't forget it! Jace, what were you doing? Who was that person?"

Jace grabbed my shoulders. He didn’t hurt me, but his grip was firm.

"Listen to me very carefully, Lenny. That video is why I need you. That video is why I’m fixing my image. If that gets out, the NFL is the least of my worries. I’ll be lucky if I stay alive." He explained, and I noticed his shaky breaths. I stared at him with my heart racing.

Was it that bad?

"What did you do?" I asked in a low voice and Jace looked at the window. The rain started to fall again, streaking the glass.

"I did what I had to do to protect my family. And now, someone is trying to use you to get to me." He explained and my brows creased.

"Who?"

Jace looked back at me, there was a look in his eyes I had never seen before. It wasn't anger. It was fear.

"The same person who gave you that master key to the Dean’s office," Jace said and I froze. My blood ran cold.

"How did you know about the key? I never told you where I got it."

Jace leaned closer. His forehead was almost touching mine.

"Because he knew about you because of me.” He whispered and my eyes widened.

This was the most confusing and shocking explanation ever. He had just told me that his enemy knew about the whole Dean’s situation beforehand. What if everything was setup?

“What do you mean?” I asked with a shaky voice and I could tell that Jace had seen the suspicion in my eyes.

“I meant he told me in a text that he had given you the master keys to solve your problem. A problem he created in the first place.” Jace explained and my eyes widened in realization.

So Jace's enemy had planned everything? He had sent that letter! He helped me get the master keys and obviously wanted me to get caught in the process. But why? How does him hating Jace have to do with me?

“So they targeted me because of you?” I confirmed and Jace's jaw clenched.

“Yes.” The words barely came out above a whisper and I stared at him, horrified.

“Why?” I asked and he looked out the window like that was the last thing he needed to answer.

“I mentioned you a few times, that's all.” He answered and my lips parted.

Why would he mention me a few times? I didn’t know he had noticed me before that night.

“Wh…” I was about to ask again, but Jace interjected.

“Don’t ask me.” He said firmly, then he turned on the radio.

Throughout the remaining part of the journey, we didn’t talk to each other, but I had a billion thoughts going through my mind.

I realized I wasn't just a victim of a fake dating scheme. I was a piece in a game I didn't even know was being played.

And the person I thought was my captor might be the only thing standing between me and the person who actually wanted me dead.

When the car finally came to a stop, Jace gestured for me to get down, but I glared at him.

"Why? Why me?" I choked out and Jace looked at my lips, then back at my eyes.

“You knew that everything was set up by your enemy, yet you chose to blackmail me with it, why?” I asked with pain evident in my tone.

Does he even know what I have gone through because of this stupid arrangement with him?

"Because you're the only one who doesn't know how to lie. And that makes you the perfect weapon to restore my image. No one would doubt this.” He explained, but just then my phone buzzed.

I looked down. A new message was on the screen.

Unknown: He’s lying, Lenny. Look in the glove box.

I looked at Jace. He was watching me and he had seen the message too.

"Don't," he said.

I nodded in obedience. I didn’t want to dare him. But I couldn’t help, but wonder what was in the glove box?

And why did Jace Callahan suddenly look like he wanted to jump out of a moving car?

LENNY’S POVMy fingers were shaking as I tried to fix the buttons on my dress, my skin still felt like it was humming from where Jace had touched me. The air in the lounge felt too thick and too hot.Jace was standing by the door, looking perfectly fine, his hair wasn't even messy, he looked like the king again, while I felt like I had just survived the most embarrassing moment of my life."You okay?" Jace asked, his voice was back to that smooth, calm tone."I’m fine," I said, I couldn't look at him "I just... we should go.""Lenny.""What?" I finally looked up.He was leaning against the doorframe, watching me. "You don't have to beembarrassed, It’s just us.""It’s not just us, Jace, It’s a game. "Shut up."He laughed. "Come on, dork, I’m hungry, let’s go get some real food. My treat.""You a

LENNY’S POVThe sound of the lock clicking felt like I was getting trapped in the room, I stared at the door, then back at Jace, my heart was jumping in my throat."Jace, stop," I said, I tried to step back, but my heels hit the edge of the rug. "What are you doing? No one is watching us, rule numbertwo, remember? In private, we don't have to talk, we don't have to do... this."Jace didn't move away, infact stepped even closer. He was so tall I had to tilt my head back just to see his face, he looked at me with eyes that were dark and heavy."I remember the rules, Lenny," he whispered, and reached out and ran his hand down my arm, his skin was hot against mine. "But I also remember what I told you, for the next six months, you are mine and I have every right to touch what belongs to me.""I don't belong to you," I hissed, putting my hands on his chest to push him away. "This is an agreement, just a contract, It isn't real.""Your mouth says it’s fake," Jace murmured, leaning down, h

LENNY’S POVI looked at the photo one last time, my fingers were shaking, but I forced myself to be still."It’s just a prank," I whispered. "It’s Marcus trying to scare me, or some obsessed fan."I didn't cry and definitely didn't call Jace. I just stood up, walked to my desk, and shovedthe photo into the very bottom drawer. I wasn't going to let a piece of paper win, I wasn't going to be the victim anymore.I sat down on my bed, looking at the ceiling, the silence in the room felt like it was pushing against my chest. Everything I had been holding in, the break-in, the fake engagement, the reporters—it all came rushing up.I grabbed my pillow and pressed it over my face as hard as I could. And then I screamed.I screamed until my lungs felt like they were on fire, I screamed until my throat was raw, I screamed for the girl who just wanted to study Biology and be invisible. When I finally stopped, I was gasping for air, but the pressure in my chest was gone, for now.***"Lenny? Shouted questions, the clicking of a hundred cameras, and the heavy thud of people pushing to get closer surrounded us.Jace held my hand firmly, his grip was warm and steady as he guided me through the crowd of reporters. I kept my head down and twisted the white silk of my dress in my fingers."Keep breathing," Jace whispered in my ear. "Just look at me.""There are so many people," I replied quietly. My heart pounded in my chest."They just want a story, Lenny. Let’s give them a good one."He pulled out a chair for me at the long table, I sat down and smoothed the silk over my knees. Jace stood beside me, resting one hand on my shoulder, his touch felt solid, like a shield. I wanted to believe that.A reporter in the front row stood up. "Jace! Over here! When did this start? No one even knew you were seeing anyone!"Jace leaned into the microphone, flashing that famous, handsome smile. "It’s been going o

LENNY'S POVThe coffee in my cup was cold, but I didn’t mind. I was too busy staring at the diamond on my finger, it was huge, so I felt like everyone in the shop was watching it."I still can't believe it," Jenna whispered, leaning over the table, her eyes wide. "Engaged? Lenny, you’re only nineteen. We’re still in college!""It’s fast," I said, my voice shaky. "I know it's fast. But Jace... he says he doesn’t want to wait, he says life moves quickly with the NFL involved.""It’s romantic," Annette said, scrolling through her phone, looking totally bored. "Most guys just want to hook up, Jace actually wants to put a ring on it, so you should be happy."I looked at Annette, she seemed so calm. "I am happy, I’m just... overwhelmed.""You should be," Annette said, looking up and smiling. "By the way, did you get that white silk dress ready? The one with the pearls? Jace mentioned it would look great on camera for the press conference tomorrow."I froze and I slowly set my cup down."Th

More importantly, I sensed everyone’s eyes on Lenny. The red dress was a nice touch, the ring was even better.I settled back on the couch in my private lounge. The room was quiet, away from the loud fans and reporters. I poured myself a glass of whiskey, the liquid caught the light. I watched the ice cubes swirl before taking a slow sip.It burned and It felt good.My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was Miller, my agent. I picked it up on the first ring."Tell me you saw the news," Miller said, sounding like he had just run a marathon."I don’t watch the news, Miller.
