RULES

AURORA

"You're the figure skater."

I stare at him. Then I narrow my eyes. "You say that like that's a bad thing."

"Oh, it is," he says dryly. "When she's apparently going to be staying in my room."

Excuse me? I fold my arms across my chest. "Your room?"

He legs out a humorless laugh before dragging both hands through his dark hair in frustration.

“Yesterday, housing told us one of the guys would have to make space for a girl because the girls’ dorms were overbooked.” He points vaguely toward the hallway. “Since mine and Duke’s rooms were the only ones with space, we made a bet.”

I blink.

“A bet?”

“Yeah.” He glares at me like this entire situation is personally my fault. “I didn’t think they’d actually put her in my room.”

Her.

Not even you.

Rude.

“My name is Jayden. I'm the hockey captain,” he adds like that explains everything.

I stare at him blankly. “…Congratulations?”

His jaw tightens.

Okay, maybe mocking the giant hockey player isn’t the smartest survival instinct, but he started it.

He exhales sharply before dropping onto the bed opposite mine. The mattress creaks beneath his weight as he leans forward, elbows resting on his knees.

For the first time since he walked in, I properly look at him. I've heard about hockey players being ridiculously hot and all. Back home, the guys aren't bad but if there's one thing I've come to realize?

It's that they are certainly a group of obnoxious bunch who think the world revolves around them.

You're an athlete? Who cares? We're all athletes. Just do your thing and get it over with. But no. They want everybody they come across to know what they are.

My guy here is tall enough that his legs stretch ridiculously far beneath the desk beside his bed. Broad shoulders. Strong jawline. Dark hair falling into sharp blue eyes that currently look exhausted and annoyed.

Mostly annoyed.

At me.

“This is insane,” I mutter.

“Glad we agree.”

I shoot him a glare which he ignores.

“If we’re going to do this,” he says, “I have rules.”

I actually laugh. It's a short, disbelieving laugh. I don't think he meant that. We aren't doing this. “Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

No. He's not. “You can’t just make rules for another human being.” Definitely my point. I want to add that I still have a lot of things to say. Like... it's my room as much as it's his.

“I absolutely can when that human being randomly appears half naked in my room.”

Heat rushes to my face. He's never going to let me live that down, is he? “That wasn’t my fault!”

“Still. It's traumatic."

“Oh my God.”

He points at me lazily. “Rule number one, you don’t touch my stuff. Ever."

Oops. Too late.

“Rule number two. No people over without warning me first.”

I open my mouth. If he sees my opened mouth, he doesn't acknowledge it. He just keeps going.

“Rule number three, If I have early practice, don’t wake me up.”

“You act like I care when you wake up.”

“And rule number four,” he says, ignoring me again, “don’t ask questions about hockey.”

I blink slowly. “What kind of stupid rule is that?”

“The kind I just made.”

I stare at him in disbelief. He stares right back. Oh, he's being serious? This boy is actually insane. It's a good thing I don't care about hockey.

“Well,” I say sweetly, “I have a rule too.”

His eyebrow lifts slightly.

“You have to keep the room tidy.”

His eyes narrow immediately. Then he slowly glances around the room. The folded clothes. The cleared desk. The organized hockey gear.

Realization dawns on his face. “You touched my stuff.”

I smile tightly. “You’re welcome.”

He shuts his eyes like he’s physically pained. “You touched my stuff,” he repeats slowly.

“Oh no,” I deadpan. “I cleaned.”

“You moved everything.”

"Why are you acting like it's a crime? You should be thanking me! Your side of the room looked disgusting.”

His eyes snap open. “My side?”

“Yes. Your side.”

“That’s because I knew where everything was.”

“No, you didn’t. There was a hockey stick under your bed and socks hanging from your lamp.”

He points at me again. “Exactly. Organized.”

I stare at him for a long moment before deciding there’s genuinely no reasoning with this man. He groans and leans back on the bed, rubbing both hands over his face.

“I’ve been practicing all day,” he mutters. “I can’t deal with your brattiness right now.”

My mouth drops open. “Brattiness?”

But he’s already standing again. The giant idiot walks straight past me toward the bathroom. Then stops dead.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake.”

I wince slightly. Okay, maybe reorganizing the bathroom too was a little much.

His toothbrush now sits neatly in a cup beside the sink. His cologne bottles are aligned properly. His shower products are arranged in size order because apparently my brain physically cannot leave things messy.

He turns slowly toward me.

“You touched my stuff,” he says for the third time.

“Again. You're welcome.”

“You don’t touch another person’s bathroom setup." He brushes past me again, and reaches for his phone. I'm right behind him.

He presses the phone to his ear.

“Duke,” he says flatly. “Can I stay with you tonight?”

My stomach drops. “What are you doing?”

He ignores me completely.

“Because housing apparently assigned me a five-foot demon with boundary issues.”

I gasp. “I am not five feet!”

His eyes flick toward me briefly. “Five-two, then.”

“I’m five-four!”

I glare at the side of his head while he listens to whatever his friend is saying on the phone.

Then he sighs.

“Yeah. I’ll be there in ten.”

He hangs up.

“You cannot be serious right now.”

He calmly walks over to his dresser and yanks out a duffel bag.

“I need one night before I lose my sanity.”

“Oh, please,” I scoff. “You’re being dramatic.”

He starts shoving clothes into the bag without answering.

Something twists uncomfortably in my stomach. My fingers curl slightly against my sleeves. He keeps packing. I stare at him for a few seconds before the words leave my mouth before I can stop them.

“Please.”

He pauses briefly but doesn’t turn around.

“I…” My throat tightens embarrassingly. “I can’t sleep alone in the dark.”

His movements stop completely this time. Slowly, he turns toward me.

  • Fake Dating The Hockey Captain AKA My Roommate   029 - THE KISS

029THE KISSJAYDENThe guys have all gone ahead with Claudia to the party while I'm stuck out here waiting for Aurora to find her heels so we can go and join the rest of the party. That's if we even meet the fun part. Knowing how long it takes to find parking near a new club, we might just be showing up for the after-party of the after-party.I haven't even seen what she's putting on yet. I just know that it's something nice. Yes. It has to be something nice if it requires heels, which always seem to be the last, most elusive item, yeah? Shut the fuck up, Jay. What do you know about women's fashion?Beyond 'looks good' or 'looks bad,' which isn't exactly a nuanced critique. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But yet, I offered to stay and drive Aurora. Partly because the last time she came to a party, she looked hot as fuck. Yes. That nice black dress. I'm probably wondering if her dress today is anything like that day, or if she's gone for something completely different."Found it." I

  • Fake Dating The Hockey Captain AKA My Roommate   028 - NOT MY TYPE

028NOT MY TYPEJAYDENI'm not an asshole. I know when to stop talking, when to bite my tongue, especially when someone's clearly hitting a raw nerve. And judging from the very confused, almost hurt look Aurora has on her pretty face right now, I can tell it's now. The last thing I want to do is be the reason she has an issue with a loved one, especially if it's her mom. I don't need that kind of drama or guilt on my conscience.Still, I think it's a bit of a miscommunication. Nothing way out of the question could have happened. Maybe she didn't get the details right and stuff. I jerk my head up at the sudden sound of loud voices, emerging from the glass door, the one leading from the dorm buildings. Three familiar faces resolve themselves. Harry’s hands are stuffed casually in his pockets, and he’s staring intently at Claudia, giving her his full attention as they walk. Mason however, is walking ahead of the two of them. He seems to have noticed my car because he's pointing at it, h

  • Fake Dating The Hockey Captain AKA My Roommate   027 - JUST THREE

027JUST THREEAURORA I'm not even playing when I say I need to see Claudia, right away. I've been here for what... two three hours? I'm over it. Claudia has been texting me nonstop. I know it's only a matter of time before she leaves the dorm and comes find me. "You ready to go?" Jayden asks, getting up and walking toward me.Thank God. I nod, picking my bag immediately. "I thought you'd never ask."He doesn't reply, but opens the door, holding it for me. We go through the elevator ride and we're outside the building in no time. My phone keeps pinging with text notifications. Claudia; Girl, there's a party and we're going. My brows shoot up. This girl. I said to stay indoors and wait for me, knowing damn well the second she gets bored, trouble follows. But knowing Claudia, I should have known it was impossible for her to sit still in a quiet dorm room for more than 20 minutes. I smile, shaking my head. "Claudia's dope." Jayden speaks up beside me. "Is she?" My smile is still th

  • Fake Dating The Hockey Captain AKA My Roommate   026 - READY TO LEARN

026READY TO LEARN JAYDENMy first glance at the boy who knocked up my sister and it's in a hotel room, with him glancing down at his feet.So this is the famous Bryce. The kid is smaller than I thought. Leaner than I thought he'd be. I don't know what erratic thought was running through my mind. I'll say what. Even though I knew that body structure didn't have anything to do with how fertile a guy could be... I just felt that Bryce looked too young to father a child."So what?" I fold my arms across my chest. He raises his head slowly. "What?""What happened to protection?" I ask.He winces, averting his gaze while Celina mumbles something inaudible behind me. I ignore her. She needs to not interrupt my time with this guy. I need to hear what he has to say. "It was... not the way you think." He says."Oh. So you decided to have sex with her without fucking protection?"Celina's murmurs become a little audible now. So audible that I can make out a 'leave him alone, Jay.' I turn to f

  • Fake Dating The Hockey Captain AKA My Roommate   025 - WHERE IS THIS BRYCE

025 WHERE IS THIS BRYCE JAYDEN Bro, it's too early to define the relationship between Aurora and I. It's too damn early. Because, you know those movies where when you start giving a name to what you're doing... shit hits the fan because of that? It’s like a curse, a jinx. Yes. I'm not about to admit to liking the girl because I know that I don't. Or, at least, I'm convincing myself I don't. She's pretty alright. Her eyes are bright, and yeah, she’s got a feisty spirit. But that's it. That’s the full extent of it. I like her personality and vibe. We can banter and she calls me on my bullshit. That's a good thing, a rare thing that most girls would never do. But liking Aurora? Nah. Claudia can say whatever she wants about us. I know for a fact that Aurora is just messing around with Mason, a rebound from Brian. Once she realizes that, once she sees Mason for the nice, safe, boring guy he is, she'll stop this little infatuation of hers. She’ll come back to reality. I gl

  • Fake Dating The Hockey Captain AKA My Roommate   024 - YOU LIKE HER, DON'T YOU?

024 YOU LIKE HER, DON'T YOU? JAYDEN I slide my phone into my pocket, exhaling heavily as I drive while I repeat the words in my head. Visitor's center. Tall, gorgeous, fuck-me boots, black hair with an emerald streak. Aurora’s description of her best friend keeps repeating in my head. My hands are shaking as I shove them into the pockets of my hoodie, weaving through the afternoon campus crowd toward the visitor’s center. I’m completely losing it. Celina is here. With Bryce. The guy who knocked up my seventeen-year-old sister, the guy who represents every single failure of protection on my part. Just thinking his name makes my jaw clench so tight my teeth ache. If Aurora hadn't agreed to intercept them, I would have broken something by now. Or worse, I would have broken Celina’s heart by screaming at the only person she has left. "Get it together," I mutter to myself, taking a turn past the library quad. When the brick facade of the visitor’s welcome center comes int
