Chapter 2

Author: Sunny Bug
Caden's "home"? Total dump.

Right on the Neutral Zone border, tucked beside a rank heap of prey bones. Lawn looked like it hadn't seen a mower in years—vines crawling up the walls like they wanted inside.

"This is seriously your place?"

I picked my way around puddles in heels that were 100% not made for this.

"Staff dorm."

He unlocked the door. The metal shrieked like it hated being touched.

Inside? Weirdly spotless. One bed. One beat-up couch. Everything lined up like he lived with a drill sergeant.

"You take the bed. I'll crash on the couch."

He shrugged off his blazer, dropped it over a chair. That white shirt? Painted on. Every line of muscle just... there.

I swallowed hard. Okay, rude how good he looked.

"So, what do you even do?"

Hot face, hotter body—living in this place? Didn't track.

"Club server," he said, grabbing a water bottle from the fridge and tossing it my way.

I squinted, eyeing him head to toe.

Club? Server?

That whole "But for that price? You're barely getting a paw" line. The way he flirted like it was muscle memory.

I'd been to the northern Neutral Zone as a pup. Some of those brothels? Even the male wolves sold their bodies.

"Hey... no judgment," I said, stiff. "But if your back's wrecked, maybe slow it down a little."

Pfft—

Caden choked, spraying water everywhere.

"What?!"

He stared at me like I'd lost it.

"Nothing!" I blurted, pivoting fast. "I'm starving. Got food?"

"Just black bread." He nodded at a cabinet.

Ugh. Fine. Bread it is.

I yanked out a chunk that could've doubled as a rock. While figuring out how not to break a fang on it, I remembered the jar of black truffle stashed in my bag.

Soon as Caden hit the shower, I scooped out a huge spoonful and smeared it on. The second it hit the bread—boom—rich, savory perfection filled the room.

"What smells so good?"

I whipped around—and instantly regretted it.

Caden strolled out, towel slung low, water sliding down abs sculpted by the Moon Goddess herself.

I blinked, hard, then shoved bread in my mouth like it owed me money. "N-Nothing. Just some leftover jam."

He gave me a look but let it go. Pulled out a takeout box instead.

"Client didn't touch this. Thought we could split it."

Inside? Flame-seared venison and chilled salmon, plated like something off a five-star menu.

"This... is LEFTOVER?"

I grabbed a piece of venison. That flavor? Only came from three-year-old deer raised way deep in the eastern forests.

No way a club server-slash-pretty toy boy scored food like this on a legit paycheck.

"Yeah. They didn't touch it. Would've been a waste," Caden said, straight-faced.

I didn't push. Just ate.

After that night, we kinda... fell into this ridiculous shared life.

To sell my broke girl cover, I hustled nonstop—odd jobs, random gigs, anything. Not that I was faking it. I was flat-out broke.

But weird stuff kept showing up.

A dress I wanted but hadn't bought? Magically lying across the couch.

Luxury venison dinners at night.

Diamond-studded bracelets Caden swore were just "tips."

Once, he straight-up stole a limited edition supercar from a client just to take me on a joyride when I was spiraling.

Bit by bit, it hit me—

Caden wasn't half as poor as he pretended to be.

I even started catching a familiar scent on him.

One that smelled like mine.

But he never mentioned the Lunara Tear.

And I kept pretending not to see the cracks in his story.

Life just... kept moving. Quiet. Offbeat. Almost too chill.

I burned with rage. "You really are like a curse that won't quit."Mack sneered. "It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, Winona wouldn't have dumped me. You ruined everything—my future, my life!"I had NOTHING when I was with you. Just shame for dating some broke nobody. Then we break up, and suddenly you're the Stormhowl royalty?!"How could I NOT hate you?!"I laughed—cold, sharp, furious. "So your poverty's MY fault now? Do you even hear yourself?"He flinched. Exposed."You wolves with noble blood," he spat, "you'll never get it—what it's like scraping by at the bottom."Then his eyes cut to Caden, and that venomous smirk twisted across his face."So this is what the Alpha Heir of Crestborne picked up? Trash I already threw out? Pathetic."I lunged to slap him, but Caden beat me to it.He ripped the silver blade from his arm and pressed it to Mack's face. "Blood doesn't define you. Omega or Alpha—that's just your starting line. Where you end up? That's on you."And

Back in Stormhowl territory, I was trapped under a swarm of stylists for three brutal hours."Lady Skylar, what happened to your skin? It's so rough now—did you stop using the serum I gave you?" One of them grazed my cheek like I was some kind of tragic makeover case."Less talk, more work." My head was already spinning with Caden.Tonight was the big engagement banquet—Stormhowl Pack locking ties with Crestborne Pack.Dad said I had no choice. Time to meet the Crestborne Alpha Heir. Lucky me.Eight o'clock. Ballroom buzzed.I stepped in on my father's arm, rocking a custom gown that stole the spotlight.Didn't care. My eyes were already scanning the crowd.Ridiculous, I knew. But some part of me still hoped I'd spot him."Congratulations!"Guests swarmed in with fake smiles and empty blessings.Father lit up. "Thank you, thank you. Tonight's all about the young wolves."Then the crowd shifted near the doors."The Crestborne Pack is here!"I looked up.Gareth, the Crestb

That night, deep in the woods, Caden and I were tearing into fresh rabbit when my phone buzzed.Three texts lit up the screen—Dad.[Your trial's done. One night left. Get back to the pack.][Or I come south—and you'll regret losing the Lunara Tear.][I heard the Crestborne Alpha Heir's heading home. Finalize the bond.]I froze mid-bite. Thought Dad hated that pack.My eyes flicked to Caden. Maybe I should bring him north with me?But he wasn't eating anymore. Just staring at the rabbit. Jaw clenched. Shoulders locked.Off. Way off.I nudged him. "Hey. What is it?"Caden let out this dry, hollow laugh. "I might... have to leave."My chest tightened. "Leave? Where?""No, not like that." He turned to face me, serious now. "Skylar, I lied. I'm not just some server."My heart was already pounding. 'Great. He's about to say he's one of those sleazy wolves who sells his body for cash.'"I screwed up," he said. "I have to run. I'm a spy. I stole intel from Crestborne."They're h

Caden looked away. "Wh–What? Of course not."I didn't buy it, but I let it slide. For now.Honestly, I'd rather believe he was my dad's secret bastard than accept he might be the infamous, acne-scarred Crestborne Alpha Heir everyone whispered about. But the calm didn't last.Because Mack showed up. Again. After getting kicked out of Howl Bar, things went nuclear with Winona. Word was, her dad—the Frostmoon Pack Beta—ripped into him for not protecting her and embarrassing the whole pack.He tore Mack a new one in front of everyone. Engagement? I froze.No. Freaking. Way.Roland Pritzker.I hadn't seen that relic in five years—not since my dad's deal talks with the humans. And now, boom—instant recognition?I was masked head to toe. Only my damn eyes showing. How'd that fossil clock me so fast? Was his nose better than ours?"Run!"I grabbed Caden's arm and bolted.Behind us, Roland called out—way too loud and way too cheerful:"Don't run! Perfect timing—the Crestborne Alpha Heir's here too! Let's all have a little chat?"Alpha Heir?Where?!I whipped around——and stared straight at Caden. He had his back to Roland, yanking his mask up like it might save his life.In a fake-deep voice, he muttered, "Uh... never heard of Skylar. Just here to mop floors."Roland squinted. "He really looks like Alpha Heir... from behind."Nope. Not today.I grabbed Caden by the collar, popped up on my toes—and kissed him.He went stiff—then pulled me in, hand on my head, like this was some epic mate-bond moment.Roland clear

After putting Winona in her place, things chilled—for like, a second. Then he called. My runaway father. The same Alpha who bailed on the pack to chase thrills across the globe."Skylar, how's the trial? Still breathing?""Thanks to you, I'm thriving," I bit back."Good. One last task. Finish it, and you're done.""What kind of task?""The Crestborne Pack's sealing a trade deal with humans today. Neutral Zone Trade Center. Take someone. Blow it up. Wreck the whole thing."I just... blinked. How much did he hate Crestborne? They weren't just strong—they ruled the South. Their Alpha? Lethal. Their heir? Worse. This wasn't a mission. It was a death sentence. But if I wanted out of this cursed trial... I had to take the hit.I hung up and turned to Caden. He was mid-toothbrush."Caden, I need a favor."He spit. "Another roleplay? What's the vibe—daddy issues or hostile takeover?""Somewhere in between. I'm crashing Crestborne's trade deal. Need backup."His toothbrush sli
