Chapter 3

Penulis: Sunny Bug
Then outta nowhere, Winona tagged me on social media—on purpose.

She dropped an invite to the wildest werewolf hotspot in the Neutral Zone: Howl Bar.

"We're going. No, we HAVE to." I smacked the table. "And I'm dragging a plus one."

Caden was sunk into the couch, gaming.

"Caden. Up. We're going out."

"Busy."

"I'll pay extra."

"Done." He chucked his phone, stood, and straightened his shirt. "What am I this time? Cocky CEO or washed-up heir with a trust fund?"

"Just don't say you're an escort again like last time," I muttered.

***

We hit Howl Bar—already packed with smoke and sweat.

Dead center sat Winona, soaking up the spotlight like she was the Luna. Wolves hovered, drooling over her in that cheap white dress and the same so-called "limited edition" bag.

Mack was posted up next to her, wolf ears out, letting Winona toy with them.

The second we walked in, the place went dead quiet.

Winona's voice cut through the air. "Well, if it isn't Skylar. I figured shame would keep you hiding."

"With that glowing welcome? How could I resist?"

I grabbed Caden and slid into a corner booth.

Tonight, he rocked a fitted black shirt, sleeves rolled to the elbows—those forearms were no joke. Even in the dim, he radiated pure Alpha bloodline.

She-wolves kept sneaking glances.

Winona's smile cracked like bad Botox.

Mack scoffed. "Skylar, your boyfriend's outfit's cute. What'd that cost, five bucks at the dollar shop? Not even a brand tag."

I was ready to fire back—custom-made, obviously—but Caden slid his hand over mine, cool as ever.

"Clothes are for covering your body, not flaunting your ego," he said. "Only empty wolves flex labels to feel like they've got bite."

The room froze. Mack straight-up choked on air.

Winona snorted. "Big words for someone too broke to afford a label. Heard you two moved to the edge of the Neutral Zone? Figures. Smells like garbage out there—only low-rank mutts could live in that dump."

I didn't say a word.

Then oops—I dumped an entire glass of water right onto her oh-so-precious handbag.

The "limited edition" bled black dye like a cheap tattoo, staining her pure white dress.

Winona shrieked. "My DRESS!"

"Oh no, my bad," I said, deadpan. "But real question—what kind of knockoff bag can't handle water?"

The crowd lost it.

I pulled a pack of wet wipes from my bag and handed it over. "Here. Wipe it down. That 'leather' probably came from a bargain bin—dye's not even sealed right."

Winona snapped, "You're lying! It's REAL leather!"

Mack jumped in, fuming. "Skylar! Apologize! You ruined her bag and her dress! You even got the cash to cover it?!"

He lunged.

Caden's eyes went ice-cold.

He caught Mack's wrist mid-swing—claws snapping out—then twisted and slammed him straight onto the coffee table.

"AHH—!" Mack screamed.

Caden stared him down, voice low, lethal. "You wanna fight? You're not even worth the effort."

The weight of him—the presence—hit harder than most full-blooded Alphas I'd ever felt.

Right then, the door slammed open.

It was the owner of Howl Bar.

"Heard there was a problem?"

Mack lit up. "Franco! This guy's breaking Neutral Zone law—fighting, threatening—straight-up violation!"

But the second Franco saw Caden's face, he went pale. "Al—"

Caden shot him a sharp look.

Franco wiped his forehead. "I mean, Caden... what brings you here?"

Caden released Mack and casually dusted off his hands. "What's it look like? I'm on a date."

Franco turned to Mack. "Mack, we're closing early. Please gather your friends and leave."

Mack blinked, stunned. "I'm with Frostmoon Pack! My date's the Beta's daughter! You're seriously not scared of blowback?"

"Frostmoon or not," Franco said, firm, "Neutral Zone law applies to EVERYONE."

I watched Franco's voice drop and Mack's ego implode.

Frostmoon wasn't some backwoods pack—down South, they carried weight.

But Franco was willing to piss them off just to stay on Caden's good side... which meant Caden outranked them. Way outranked them.

Mack, Winona, and the rest of their crew got shoved out like disgraced strays—humiliated.

I nudged Caden's shoulder. "Thanks."

He smirked. "Winona's not even worth your temper."

I paused, then nodded. "Yeah. I just can't stand wolves who fake being loaded."

He turned to face me, steady. "As long as I'm around, no one lays a claw on you."

My heart stuttered.

Crap.

I think I just started catching real feelings... for the hundred-dollar partner I hired to fake it.

I burned with rage. "You really are like a curse that won't quit."Mack sneered. "It's all your fault! If it weren't for you, Winona wouldn't have dumped me. You ruined everything—my future, my life!"I had NOTHING when I was with you. Just shame for dating some broke nobody. Then we break up, and suddenly you're the Stormhowl royalty?!"How could I NOT hate you?!"I laughed—cold, sharp, furious. "So your poverty's MY fault now? Do you even hear yourself?"He flinched. Exposed."You wolves with noble blood," he spat, "you'll never get it—what it's like scraping by at the bottom."Then his eyes cut to Caden, and that venomous smirk twisted across his face."So this is what the Alpha Heir of Crestborne picked up? Trash I already threw out? Pathetic."I lunged to slap him, but Caden beat me to it.He ripped the silver blade from his arm and pressed it to Mack's face. "Blood doesn't define you. Omega or Alpha—that's just your starting line. Where you end up? That's on you."And

Back in Stormhowl territory, I was trapped under a swarm of stylists for three brutal hours."Lady Skylar, what happened to your skin? It's so rough now—did you stop using the serum I gave you?" One of them grazed my cheek like I was some kind of tragic makeover case."Less talk, more work." My head was already spinning with Caden.Tonight was the big engagement banquet—Stormhowl Pack locking ties with Crestborne Pack.Dad said I had no choice. Time to meet the Crestborne Alpha Heir. Lucky me.Eight o'clock. Ballroom buzzed.I stepped in on my father's arm, rocking a custom gown that stole the spotlight.Didn't care. My eyes were already scanning the crowd.Ridiculous, I knew. But some part of me still hoped I'd spot him."Congratulations!"Guests swarmed in with fake smiles and empty blessings.Father lit up. "Thank you, thank you. Tonight's all about the young wolves."Then the crowd shifted near the doors."The Crestborne Pack is here!"I looked up.Gareth, the Crestb

That night, deep in the woods, Caden and I were tearing into fresh rabbit when my phone buzzed.Three texts lit up the screen—Dad.[Your trial's done. One night left. Get back to the pack.][Or I come south—and you'll regret losing the Lunara Tear.][I heard the Crestborne Alpha Heir's heading home. Finalize the bond.]I froze mid-bite. Thought Dad hated that pack.My eyes flicked to Caden. Maybe I should bring him north with me?But he wasn't eating anymore. Just staring at the rabbit. Jaw clenched. Shoulders locked.Off. Way off.I nudged him. "Hey. What is it?"Caden let out this dry, hollow laugh. "I might... have to leave."My chest tightened. "Leave? Where?""No, not like that." He turned to face me, serious now. "Skylar, I lied. I'm not just some server."My heart was already pounding. 'Great. He's about to say he's one of those sleazy wolves who sells his body for cash.'"I screwed up," he said. "I have to run. I'm a spy. I stole intel from Crestborne."They're h

Caden looked away. "Wh–What? Of course not."I didn't buy it, but I let it slide. For now.Honestly, I'd rather believe he was my dad's secret bastard than accept he might be the infamous, acne-scarred Crestborne Alpha Heir everyone whispered about. But the calm didn't last.Because Mack showed up. Again. After getting kicked out of Howl Bar, things went nuclear with Winona. Word was, her dad—the Frostmoon Pack Beta—ripped into him for not protecting her and embarrassing the whole pack.He tore Mack a new one in front of everyone. Engagement? Over.So now Mack had the audacity to crawl back to me.Guess he figured if I had access to a supercar—stolen or not—I must've landed a loaded mate.Caden and I were just about to head out to hunt rabbits when we opened the door—and bam. Mack. Standing there like a bad rash, clutching a half-dead bouquet of roses."Skylar, I was wrong," he said, eyes all fake and watery. "Losing you made me realize... you're the one I love most. I don't

I froze.No. Freaking. Way.Roland Pritzker.I hadn't seen that relic in five years—not since my dad's deal talks with the humans. And now, boom—instant recognition?I was masked head to toe. Only my damn eyes showing. How'd that fossil clock me so fast? Was his nose better than ours?"Run!"I grabbed Caden's arm and bolted.Behind us, Roland called out—way too loud and way too cheerful:"Don't run! Perfect timing—the Crestborne Alpha Heir's here too! Let's all have a little chat?"Alpha Heir?Where?!I whipped around——and stared straight at Caden. He had his back to Roland, yanking his mask up like it might save his life.In a fake-deep voice, he muttered, "Uh... never heard of Skylar. Just here to mop floors."Roland squinted. "He really looks like Alpha Heir... from behind."Nope. Not today.I grabbed Caden by the collar, popped up on my toes—and kissed him.He went stiff—then pulled me in, hand on my head, like this was some epic mate-bond moment.Roland clear

After putting Winona in her place, things chilled—for like, a second. Then he called. My runaway father. The same Alpha who bailed on the pack to chase thrills across the globe."Skylar, how's the trial? Still breathing?""Thanks to you, I'm thriving," I bit back."Good. One last task. Finish it, and you're done.""What kind of task?""The Crestborne Pack's sealing a trade deal with humans today. Neutral Zone Trade Center. Take someone. Blow it up. Wreck the whole thing."I just... blinked. How much did he hate Crestborne? They weren't just strong—they ruled the South. Their Alpha? Lethal. Their heir? Worse. This wasn't a mission. It was a death sentence. But if I wanted out of this cursed trial... I had to take the hit.I hung up and turned to Caden. He was mid-toothbrush."Caden, I need a favor."He spit. "Another roleplay? What's the vibe—daddy issues or hostile takeover?""Somewhere in between. I'm crashing Crestborne's trade deal. Need backup."His toothbrush sli
