The world felt strange after Kai’s confession.

Like every hallway, every shadow, every whispered conversation in the office was somehow connected to a truth I hadn’t fully uncovered yet. My chest felt tight—not from fear of him, but from fear of what I still didn’t know.

Kai said he hated me because my existence destroyed his family. But that couldn’t be the whole story. Hate doesn’t grow from just one wound.

I walked down the corridor slowly, my steps echoing, my hands cold despite the warm lights. Everyone around me moved normally—typing, chatting, carrying files—but to me, the air felt heavier. Like something was watching. Waiting.

I kept replaying his words.

“You were sent away for your protection.”

“You were always meant to replace what I lost.”

Replace what? Replace who?

I pressed a hand to my forehead. The man who raised me never told me anything. Not the truth about my mother. Not the truth about the Bennetts. And certainly not that Kai had been living in the shadows of it all.

How many lives had been twisted because I was born?

I reached the end of the hall and leaned against the wall, forcing myself to breathe.

“Julia.”

Alan.

His footsteps were sharp, urgent. I didn’t need to look to know his expression—tight jaw, controlled anger, eyes full of answers he wasn’t ready to give.

I turned.

“You spoke to him,” Alan said quietly.

Not a question.

“Yes,” I whispered. “I needed to.”

He exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through his hair.

“You shouldn’t be alone with him right now.”

“That’s not fair,” I said. “If he knows something about my mother—about my past—I deserve to hear it.”

His gaze softened for just a second, but the tension stayed.

“You deserve the truth,” he said. “But Kai Bennett is the last person who should be giving it to you.”

Before I could ask why, a door slammed down the hall.

Alan’s head snapped toward it.

Kai.

He stood there, still, watching us. Expression unreadable. Shoulders tense. Eyes locked.

The air didn’t just thicken.

It crackled.

Alan stepped slightly in front of me without thinking.

Kai took one slow step forward.

“You told her?” he asked.

“No,” Alan said. “She told me.”

Kai’s jaw tightened. His eyes flicked to me, then back.

“Did she tell you everything?” he asked. “Or just the part that makes her look like the victim?”

I flinched.

That was enough.

“Kai,” Alan snapped, “don’t talk to her like that.”

Kai’s gaze sharpened.

“Funny,” he said. “You’re acting like you know everything. You’ve barely scratched the surface.”

I could feel the tension rising again—thick, suffocating.

“Kai…” My voice trembled. “If there’s more, then tell me. Stop keeping pieces of my life like they’re weapons.”

For a moment, something in his face broke.

Grief.

Then it was gone.

“You want the truth?” he said quietly. “Fine. But you won’t like it.”

My heart pounded.

“What truth?”

He stepped closer.

“You weren’t just sent away for protection,” he said. “You were hidden… because someone wanted you dead.”

The world tilted.

Alan went rigid beside me.

“Kai,” Alan warned.

But he didn’t stop.

“You think your mother saved you?” Kai continued. “You think she was innocent? Julia… she didn’t just run from a scandal. She destroyed a family to keep you alive.”

I shook my head, numb.

“My mother wouldn’t—”

Kai smiled.

Not kindly.

“Maybe she didn’t have to,” he said. “Everyone else did it for her.”

Something inside me cracked.

And then—

Alan grabbed him.

Hard.

Slamming him back against the wall.

“If you don’t stop,” Alan said, voice dangerously low, “I swear—”

“I’m not lying,” Kai shot back. “I’m preparing her.”

His eyes found mine.

And this time… there was no mask left.

“Because when the truth comes out,” he said softly, “you won’t be able to save her.”

A chill ran straight through me.

Alan’s grip tightened.

And in that moment, I understood something terrifying—

This wasn’t the truth.

Not yet.

This was just the beginning of it.
