Chapter 3

Autor: Fierce Sleeping Dog
The moment those words left my mouth, the wounded expression on Josephine’s face instantly froze.

“A-Are you insulting me?” Her eyes reddened, and tears spilled down her cheeks like pearls from a broken string. She turned and threw herself into Alice’s arms. “Mom! Is Meredith still sick? I was only trying to show her some kindness. How could she humiliate me like that?!”

Alice hugged her precious daughter protectively before turning toward me and shooting me a vicious glare. Her carefully maintained face was twisted with rage.

“Meredith! You’re a spoiled little brat who was clearly never taught any manners! Josephine is the top science student in the entire state. She’s the crown jewel of the Shaw family! You’re nothing but some country bumpkin. You’re not even fit to carry her purse! Apologize to Josephine now!”

“No manners?”

I repeated those words slowly. My gaze turned icy as I fixed it on Alice. “Ms. Fenton, did you forget whose name is on the deed to this house? The carpet beneath your feet, the designer clothes on your back, even the acceptance letter in your daughter’s hands… Do you remember whose money paid for all of it?”

“You…” Alice felt a chill crawl down her spine under my piercing stare. The words caught her so off guard that she was left speechless.

“That’s enough!” Issac slammed his palm onto the coffee table and shot to his feet, finally putting on the air of the head of the household. He strode toward me and looked down at me condescendingly. His eyes were filled with calculation and malice.

“Meredith, I didn’t bring you back here to throw a tantrum. Looks like your 14 years in the countryside didn’t cure your mental illness. If anything, you’ve gotten worse. You’ve even forgotten the most basic respect for your elders!”

He let out a cold sneer, turned around, and pulled a thick stack of documents from the coffee table drawer. He tossed them down in front of me.

“Now that you’re 20. It’s time we settle a few things.”

He pointed at the documents, his tone leaving no room for argument.

“This is an Inheritance Waiver Agreement. You’re a country girl with a serious psychiatric history. How could someone like you possibly manage the Shaw Corporation, a company worth hundreds of billions? So sign it.”

Issac lit a cigar and slowly exhaled a cloud of smoke. “I’ll manage the company for you, and I’ll deposit 50,000 dollars into your account for your living expenses every month. You’ll have enough to live comfortably in the countryside for the rest of your life.”

I lowered my eyes to the agreement. I saw the black ink on the white paper, every word reeking of greed and shamelessness.

“What if I don’t sign the agreement?” I looked up at him, wearing a faint, mocking smile on my face.

Issac’s expression darkened. He pulled a document bearing an official hospital seal from the folder.

“You’re not signing? Meredith, you were diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and violent tendencies fourteen years ago. I can have you committed to a locked psychiatric facility whenever I want!

"Once you’re in there, you won’t get a single cent, and you’ll spend the rest of your life behind those doors!”

“Dad, don’t be so hard on Meredith.” Josephine had stopped pretending to cry by now. She stepped up beside Issac, glancing at my cheap clothes with undisguised superiority and fake sympathy.

“Meredith, just sign it. What would you even do with all that money? You don’t even know how to spend it. Once I get into Matterson College and take over Shaw Corporation someday, I’ll take good care of Mom and Dad. I might even throw you a bone.”

Looking at this shameless family of three, I suddenly found the whole thing absurd.

For 14 years, they had stolen my place and lived as though this trillion-dollar empire belonged to them.

They lived off my mother’s hard-earned money, stole my sister’s future, and crippled my adoptive parents. Now, they were threatening to have me locked away in a psychiatric facility unless I handed everything over?

“Fine.”

When I walked out of the courthouse, the sunlight in late fall washed over me. There was a slight chill in the air, but for the first time in 14 years, everything felt clear. The hatred I had been carrying in my heart for 14 years had finally disappeared at that moment.“Ms. Shaw, the helicopter is ready. The best orthopedic and oral and maxillofacial specialists in the capital are already on board and waiting for us,” Bryan respectfully reported from beside me.“Let’s go. We’re going back to Clearwater Town.” The coldness in my eyes faded, replaced by a warmth I had not felt in years. Two hours later, a private medical helicopter bearing Shaw Corporation’s logo roared down onto the square in Clearwater Town. I stepped into that rundown farmhouse courtyard with a world-class medical team at my side.Dad and Mom froze for a moment when they saw me walk in with a group of foreign doctors.“Meredith… w-what’s going on?” Mom asked in surprise, covering her toothless mouth.I walked

I slowly walked toward Issac and Alice.“Fourteen years ago, you drove my mother to her death and stole everything that belonged to me.”I stared at them. “And 14 years later, you used my money to destroy my sister’s future! You let that vicious bastard of an illegitimate daughter ruin my adoptive father’s life and leave him with a shattered leg!“You bloodsucking parasites! How dare you lay a hand on the people I love?!”I stopped in front of Josephine, who had completely collapsed onto the floor, and looked down at her. “Don’t you love taking things that don’t belong to you? Don’t you enjoy looking down on everyone from your high horse? I’m taking every last thing that belongs to the Shaw family today. And I’m going to tear off that mask you’ve been hiding behind!“Mr. Grant!” My sharp command rang through the hall.Bryan immediately stepped forward. “Turn the evidence over to the police.”I turned to the police commander standing nearby. “Officer, you may arrest them now.”

On the screen to the left appeared a neatly written, spotless answer sheet for the science portion of the college entrance exam. In the upper-right corner, the score was displayed in glaring red.[Science—300/300][Total Score—735]The name printed on the answer sheet was Hannah Fenton. On the screen to the right was another answer sheet covered in messy corrections, with entire sections left blank. The score in the upper-right corner was nothing short of horrific.[Science—76][Total Score—235]The name on this answer sheet was Josephine Shaw.“Holy…” A collective gasp swept through the banquet hall.“Wait, 235?! Isn't Josephine supposed to be the top science student in the entire state?!”The moment Issac saw the answer sheet, cold sweat instantly soaked through his back. He whipped around and looked at Alexander Lewis, the deputy director of Matterson College’s admissions office, sitting at the main table.Alexander looked like he had just seen a ghost. He shot to his fe

I made no move for the next three days.Alice and Josephine, still furious over the way I had humiliated them on my first day back, took every opportunity to come into the guest room and torment me.On the day of the college celebration banquet, Josephine strutted into my room like a proud peacock.“Meredith, what do you think?” Josephine deliberately spun around in front of me, flaunting the necklace around her neck. “Mom just bought me this ‘Heart of the Ocean’ at an auction yesterday. It cost 15 million dollars! She got it especially for my Matterson College celebration banquet tomorrow.”She walked up to me and glanced at the cheap T-shirt I was wearing, covering her mouth as she giggled. “Oh right, I almost forgot. You’ve spent your whole life fixing appliances out in the countryside. I bet you’ve never seen this much money before, huh? Even if you sold your life, you couldn’t afford a single one of the little diamonds on this necklace.”I sat in my chair without even rai

I calmly picked up the agreement, flipped through a couple of pages, then tore the entire thing to shreds.“Issac, you want me to hand Shaw Corporation over to a loser who had to buy her way into college? You think you’re worthy of making that decision?”“What the hell are you talking about?!” Josephine shrieked like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.“I’m tired.” I completely ignored her outburst, walking straight past them toward the stairs.“Where’s my room? Don’t try to fob me off with a maid’s quarters. I want the main bedroom on the south side of the second floor.”It was my mother’s room. Alice was living in it now.“Like hell you will! That’s my room!” Alice screamed, completely losing her temper.“Put her in the guest room!” Issac’s face turned livid as he forced down his anger and instructed the butler.“Meredith, you have three days to think it over. Josephine’s celebration banquet will be on Saturday. If you haven’t signed before the banquet starts, I’ll call an
