Chapter 4

Author: Celestial Pivot
The few sycophants beside Marlene chimed in loudly.

"Exactly! Ms. Welch opened her own restaurant at such a young age. An independent woman like her is the perfect match for Mr. Crawford. What makes you think a gold digger like you can even compare?"

"Ms. Welch has been gracious enough to waive the two thousand dollars, so how about you show some gratitude before we make you do it?"

"Hurry up and admit you're a fake socialite! Then, take off those knockoffs and get out!"

Knockoffs? The jewelry and accessories I had on me added up to over a million dollars. Marlene couldn't afford a single watch of mine even if she sold this restaurant, and yet she wanted me to apologize?

She really was dreaming!

My fists clenched involuntarily.

"Marlene, seems like you really do have a death wish."

Just as the words left my mouth, my phone rang in my pocket. It was Grandpa's exclusive ringtone.

Before I could grab it, Marlene quickly snatched the phone right out of my coat pocket. She broke into a contemptuous smile as she glanced at the caller ID and promptly put it on speaker.

"Hello?"

Grandpa's robust voice came through from the other end of the line.

"Jillian, how did the blind date go?"

Marlene replied arrogantly, "I take it you're Jillian's grandfather? Your granddaughter owes me two thousand dollars, so she's being held at my restaurant.

"Listen up, old geezer—you'd better hurry up and bring the money here to bail her out. Otherwise, I'll strip every last one of those fakes off her and throw her out onto the street."

A brief silence hung on the line before Grandpa's voice, tight with restrained anger, broke through.

"Two thousand dollars? All this over that measly sum? I'll give you 20 thousand dollars. Tell me the address. If you so much as lay a finger on Jillian before my people arrive, I'll have your entire family buried alongside you."

The murderous intent in his words nearly pierced through the receiver, yet Marlene remained utterly unfazed.

"20 thousand dollars?" She laughed. "Who do you think you're bluffing, you old geezer? As if your family could have that much money! Go on, keep up the act. You and your whole family are nothing but a pack of liars!"

Marlene didn't believe a word of it and assumed Grandpa was just bluffing to save me.

She yelled into the phone, "You have ten minutes! If I don't see the money by then, things are going to get ugly for Jillian. When that happens, don't blame me for not warning you!"

With that, she hung up the phone and tossed it onto the table.

"Jillian, let's see if that lying grandfather of yours can magically come up with 20 thousand dollars in ten minutes."

Time ticked by, and Marlene's patience had clearly run out. She glanced impatiently at her watch and shot a meaningful look at the group of burly men.

"Do it! Take off every last necklace and watch she's wearing."

My eyes immediately reddened. "Marlene, you're going against your word. It hasn't even been ten minutes yet."

She waved her hand dismissively. "Two minutes less makes no difference. Besides, I never expected that old fool to actually show up with the money anyway."

A burly man immediately stepped forward and reached out to yank the necklace and earrings from my neck and ears. Another grabbed my wrist and unfastened the Patek Philippe.

That watch was a gift from my mother, Erin Decker, for my 18th birthday. I wore it every single day and never let it leave my side. And that necklace was a gift from Grandpa just this year, while the earrings had been personally designed by my best friend, Jodi Benton.

Marlene snatched those items and hurled them viciously onto the ground. The sharp sound of them shattering made my heart seize.

Still not satisfied, she instructed the others, "You love wearing knockoffs and pretending to be a socialite, huh? Smash them all to pieces!"

Several burly men in leather shoes trampled over the jewelry and watch without a shred of mercy.

I watched helplessly as the watch face shattered, the diamonds fell loose, and the metal twisted out of shape.

I glared at Marlene, practically grinding my teeth to dust. "You will regret this, Marlene!"

She looked at my reddened eyes with even greater contempt.

"What's the matter? Don't tell me you're heartbroken over a few knockoffs? This is what happens when you pretend to be a socialite. Now I'm going to teach you a lesson you won't forget. Since the jewelry's been smashed, let's strip off those counterfeit designer clothes as well."

With that, Marlene actually stepped forward and personally reached out to tear at my clothes.

I resisted with all my might but was held down firmly.

Just then, the front door of the restaurant was kicked open from the outside.

A team of bodyguards in black suits surged in and took control of the entire room. The burly men Marlene had hired were subdued and pinned to the ground in a matter of seconds.

Immediately after, Andres Moore, the renowned CEO of Heliosium Group in Richstead, strode inside. Carrying a silver briefcase, he swiftly walked up to me with a grim expression.

"Ms. Vega, my apologies for arriving late. I'm sorry you had to go through this."

"Stop." I truly couldn't bear to listen any longer.I took one look at that sham performance of tender devotion and burst out laughing."Mr. Crawford, it doesn't matter.""What?" he asked.I looked at him mockingly. "I said, your apology means nothing, and neither do your feelings. I was never interested in you anyway."Hugo's expression darkened like a thundercloud. He was someone who'd always prided himself on coming from a scholarly family and being exceptionally talented. Since he was young, he had been fawned over by girls and held himself in the highest regard. In short, he had never been so openly humiliated in his entire life.I couldn't be bothered to spare these clowns another thought. I turned to Andres, who had been standing quietly by my side the whole time."Let's go, Mr. Moore. Leave the rest for the police to handle.""Yes, Ms. Vega," Andres replied with a nod. "I'll handle all the follow-up. You won't have to deal with any more of these nuisances."…When I

Leroy kicked Marlene hard in the back of the knee, and she dropped straight to the floor before me."Ms. Vega, please be the bigger person and show mercy," Leroy begged, sniveling through tears and snot. "I failed to raise my daughter right—this is all my fault. I'm begging you on my knees."And with that, he actually dropped to his knees, groveling right there on the floor.Marlene scrambled on all fours to my feet and grabbed the hem of my pants."I was wrong. Ms. Vega, I was truly wrong!" she wailed. "I'm a lowlife who dared to look down on you! I'm begging you to forgive me just this once. I'll never do it again. I'll do anything you ask. Just please give me a chance!"She sobbed uncontrollably, her face a mess of tears and snot—the very picture of a homeless dog groveling for pity."A chance?" I repeated softly. "From the moment you charged over and pointed at my nose, calling me a fake socialite, I've been giving you chances. When you said I bought everything I was wearing

The onlookers were all dumbstruck, and none more so than Marlene. She rushed over and grabbed Leroy's arm forcefully."Dad, what are you doing? Why are you apologizing to her? Why are you hitting yourself?" she asked, utterly incredulous.Judging by her reaction, it was clear she'd always seen Leroy as the king of this entire territory. She'd never seen him grovel like this before."Since when has our family been scared of anyone? So Jillian's got some money—what's the big deal? Have you forgotten what you told me? In Richstead, money means nothing! Those billionaires still have to grovel at our feet and beg us for mercy!"Oh? It seemed I had just overheard something rather revealing.Hugo, who had remained silent all this while, now looked even more ashen than Leroy.Leroy looked as though he might pass out on the spot."Shut your mouth!" He whipped around and slapped Marlene hard across the face. The blow sent her staggering, and she fell straight to the ground. Blood began

Leroy Welch's voice boomed like thunder as his fierce gaze swept across the room. The moment Marlene saw him, she immediately scrambled and stumbled toward him as if she had just spotted her savior."Dad, it's her! That woman right there!" She pointed at me, sobbing so hard that she could barely catch her breath. "I smashed her knockoffs and now she's trying to extort 810 thousand dollars out of me! Dad, you have to teach her a lesson for me!"Leroy followed the direction of Marlene's finger and looked over, letting his eyes roam over me with brazen insolence."Miss, you've got a lot of nerve for someone so young. Trying to shake me down? Do yourself a favor and ask around—who in Richstead has the guts to cross me?"He thumped his chest, spittle flying. "810 thousand dollars? Why not make it a million? Let me tell you something, forget about getting any money—if you don't apologize to Marlene right now, you're not walking out of here on your own two feet!"The young men behind hi

"Stop." I looked at Hugo and suddenly smiled. "Mr. Crawford, I find you quite interesting. From the very beginning, you've been pleading on Marlene's behalf, saying she did it all for you."Since you care so much about her and you're so full of chivalry…" I paused and smirked faintly. "Then I can't be unreasonable either. You're welcome to pay the 810 thousand dollars in her place—not a cent less. Once the full amount is paid, I'll let Marlene off the hook."At this, Hugo furrowed his brows, looking deeply torn. The Crawford family might be touted as a scholarly household with considerable prestige in Richstead's academic circles, and yes, they owned plenty of valuable antique texts and artworks. But those were the foundation of their name and their social standing—not assets that could be liquidated into cash. In other words, expecting Hugo to come up with over 800 thousand dollars in liquid funds all at once was worse than asking for his life.I arched my brow. "What's the matte

400 thousand dollars?Everyone in the room drew a sharp breath."Just one watch costs 400 thousand dollars? Is it made of solid gold or something?""Even if it were made of gold it wouldn't be 400 thousand dollars. But if it's a Patek Philippe, it could be—their watches all start at five figures.""Just because Ms. Vega claims it's 400 thousand dollars, we're supposed to believe it's worth that much? Is that for real, or is she just trying to extort Ms. Welch?"Marlene hastily chimed in, "Exactly! Why should we take your word that it's 400 thousand dollars? What if you're lying?""I'm lying?" I gave a cold laugh and turned my gaze toward Andres, who was standing beside me. "Mr. Moore, you're an expert. Why don't you tell her whether or not this watch is worth 400 thousand dollars?"Andres immediately stepped forward and carefully examined the remains of the wristwatch in my hands."This is a platinum Patek Philippe Celestial. The transaction price at Sotheby's back then was 380
