LOGINShe was humiliated at her own engagement party. Three hours later, she was wearing another man’s ring. Christian Ford was supposed to be her escape. A dangerously attractive billionaire offering her two million dollars to become his wife. One year. One marriage. One simple rule: Don’t fall in love. Everything is fake! But shit starts getting real quickly...

“You thought you could marry into this family?!” Faith’s voice cut through the ballroom like a knife. “You’re nothing but Barry’s assistant. A poor little secretary playing dress up.” Jessica stood frozen, liquid dripping down her cheeks. Two hundred guests stared. Phones came up. Someone was already filming. “Faith, stop this,” Barry said, but he didn’t move to help her. He just stood there in his nice suit, looking embarrassed instead of angry. That told Jessica everything she needed to know. “Tell them, Barry,” Faith pressed, gripping his arm. “Tell them the engagement is off. Tell them you’re marrying me instead!” Barry looked at the floor. “Jessica, I’m sorry. Faith’s family owns half the shares in my company. This is… this is business.” Business. He was calling their two-year engagement business. Jessica felt her hands shake, but not from sadness. From rage. She had given up her own dreams to support him. She had worked three jobs while he finished his business degree. And now he was tossing her aside in front of the entire city’s elite like she was trash. “You knew about this for weeks,” Jessica said quietly. “You let me buy a dress for this gala. You let me believe we were still together.” “It’s not that simple—” “It’s exactly that simple.” A new voice, deep and cold, cut through the room. Every head turned. A tall man walked through the crowd like the room belonged to him. Black suit. No tie. Eyes so sharp they looked like they could cut glass. Jessica didn’t know him, but she felt every person around her go still, like prey sensing a predator. “Mr. Ford,” Barry stammered, his face going pale. “I didn’t know you’d be here tonight.” So this was Christian Ford. Jessica had heard the name whispered in every office she’d ever worked in. The man who owned half the buildings in the city. The man who could end a company with one phone call. “I own the company you work for, Barry,” Christian said flatly. “I make it my business to know things.” He turned to Jessica. His eyes moved over her face, still wet from the champagne, and something flickered there. Not pity. Something colder. Something calculating. “Is this the woman you were engaged to?” he asked Barry, not looking away from Jessica. “Yes, sir, but—” “And you humiliated her in public to marry someone with better shares?” Christian’s voice didn’t rise. It didn’t need to. “That’s the kind of decision that tells me everything about your character.” Barry’s face turned white. “Sir, please, I can explain—” “You’re fired.” Two words. That was all it took. Gasps rippled through the crowd. Faith’s mouth fell open. “You can’t do that,” Faith snapped. “He has a contract!” “I own the company that holds that contract,” Christian said. “I can do whatever I want.” Jessica stood there, stunned, champagne still dripping off her chin. This stranger had just destroyed Barry’s career in ten seconds, and he hadn’t even raised his voice. Christian turned back to her. Up close, his eyes were a strange gray, like storm clouds before they broke. Jessica’s heart started pounding hard against her chest. She didn’t understand why. She had just been dumped in front of the whole city, and yet all she could feel right now was the heat coming off this man’s stare. “Come with me,” Christian said. “Excuse me?” “You heard me. Come with me. Now.” “I don’t even know who you are,” Jessica said, lifting her chin even though her legs were shaking. A small, cold smile touched his lips. “You will.” He held out his hand. Jessica looked at it, then at Barry, who was being pulled away by security guards. Then at Faith, whose face had gone red with fury. Jessica had nothing left here. No fiance. No dignity in this room. No reason to stay. She took Christian’s hand. The moment their skin touched, something like electricity shot up her arm. She almost pulled back, but his grip tightened, steady and sure, like he had expected that reaction. “What do you want with me?” she whispered as he led her toward the doors. “I need a wife,” Christian said simply. “You need a life. I think we can help each other.” Jessica stopped walking. “Are you insane?” “My grandfather is dying,” Christian said, and for one second, something human flashed behind his cold eyes. “His last wish is to see me married before he passes. I have thirty days. You just lost everything in front of three hundred people. I’m offering you a way to win it all back.” “This is crazy. I don’t even know you.” “You know Barry,” Christian said. “And look where that got you.” Jessica’s throat tightened. He wasn’t wrong. “Marry me for one year,” Christian continued. “Fake, on paper only. I’ll pay off every debt you have. I’ll make sure Barry never works in this industry again. And when it’s done, you walk away with more money than you’ve ever seen in your life.” Behind them, Faith was screaming something at Barry. The whole room was still watching, whispering, recording. Jessica looked down at the small diamond ring still on her finger. Barry’s ring. The one she was supposed to wear tomorrow at their real wedding. She pulled it off and dropped it on the floor. “Fine,” she said, looking back up into Christian Ford’s storm-gray eyes. “I’ll marry you.” His smile widened, just slightly. “Smart girl.” He didn’t tell her the rest. He didn’t tell her about the company his grandfather actually wanted to hand over. He didn’t tell her about the real reason he needed a wife who couldn’t ask questions. And he definitely didn’t tell her that the moment they signed those papers, she would become the most hated woman in the city.“I never said her name,” Lira said quickly. “I only mentioned someone using genuine friendship as cover.”“But you looked right at her,” Jessica said, watching Faith’s face crumple with hurt and disbelief.“I didn’t do anything,” Faith said, her voice shaking. “How many times do I have to prove myself to this family? I helped expose Barry. I met with Ellison only once, out of fear, and told you everything about it.”“Maybe that’s exactly what someone playing both sides would say,” Christian said, though uncertainty colored his voice now.“Or maybe I’m just an easy target because I already made mistakes once,” Faith snapped, anger breaking through her fear. “Every single time something goes wrong in this house, everyone looks at me first.”“That’s not fair,” Jessica started.“Isn’t it?” Faith interrupted. “I’ve spent months trying to prove myself, and the moment Lira mentions someone using friendship as cover, everyone assumes it’s me instead of considering other options.”The room fel
“Who sent that?” Christian asked, reading the cryptic warning over Jessica’s shoulder.“I don’t know,” Jessica said, staring at the unknown number. “But it’s not the same number Ellison’s been using.”“A second player,” Arnold said grimly. “Just what this situation needed.”“Maybe it’s a warning,” Jessica’s mother offered. “Someone trying to help us stay cautious.”“Or someone trying to make us distrust the evidence we just received,” Christian said. “Sow doubt so we hesitate to use it.”Jessica studied the documents spread across the table again, uncertainty creeping into her chest. “What if this whole package is a trap? What if using this evidence somehow backfires?”“We verify everything first,” Christian said firmly. “Before acting on any of it.”He picked up his phone, dialing a number Jessica didn’t recognize.“Who are you calling?” she asked.“An old friend,” Christian said. “Someone who used to work in financial crime investigation before starting his own private firm. If anyo
The prison visiting room smelled like bleach and old coffee. Christian sat across a metal table, waiting as guards led Matt in, his orange jumpsuit hanging loose on a frame thinner than Christian remembered.“Cousin,” Matt said, sitting down carefully. “This is unexpected.”“We need to talk,” Christian said, no warmth in his voice. “About Marcus Ellison.”Matt’s expression flickered, just slightly, but enough for Christian to notice.“I don’t know that name,” Matt said.“Don’t lie to me,” Christian snapped. “Not now. Someone is threatening my entire family, and evidence suggests you might have given him information about Jessica.”Matt’s shoulders sagged slightly. “I wondered when this conversation would happen.”“So it’s true.”“It’s complicated,” Matt said quietly. “Before my arrest, I was digging into everything about Jessica’s father, trying to find leverage against your marriage. I found old records mentioning debts, mentioning Ellison’s organization.”“And you contacted them,” C
“Who?” Jessica demanded. “Who gave him that information?”Arnold held up an old notebook, its pages yellowed with age. “I found this tucked away in my study. Notes I made right after your wedding, when Matt first started digging into your father’s history.”“You think Matt told Ellison about me?” Jessica asked, stunned. “He’s in prison.”“Prisoners can still make phone calls,” Christian said grimly. “Still send letters. If Matt learned about Ellison during his own research into your family, he might have reached out from inside, hoping to use the information against us somehow.”“Why would he do that?” Jessica asked. “He’s supposed to be reforming. He wants to meet with you, make things right.”“Or that’s exactly what he wants us to believe,” Christian said, his voice hardening, “while secretly working another angle from behind bars.”Jessica felt her stomach twist. Another betrayal, another layer of lies stacked on top of everything else.“We don’t know that for certain,” Arnold caut
