The Storage Unit

“Who?” Jessica demanded. “Who gave him that information?”

Arnold held up an old notebook, its pages yellowed with age. “I found this tucked away in my study. Notes I made right after your wedding, when Matt first started digging into your father’s history.”

“You think Matt told Ellison about me?” Jessica asked, stunned. “He’s in prison.”

“Prisoners can still make phone calls,” Christian said grimly. “Still send letters. If Matt learned about Ellison during his own research into your family, he might have reached out from inside, hoping to use the information against us somehow.”

“Why would he do that?” Jessica asked. “He’s supposed to be reforming. He wants to meet with you, make things right.”

“Or that’s exactly what he wants us to believe,” Christian said, his voice hardening, “while secretly working another angle from behind bars.”

Jessica felt her stomach twist. Another betrayal, another layer of lies stacked on top of everything else.

“We don’t know that for certain,” Arnold cautioned. “This is only a guess based on timing. We need proof before accusing him of anything else.”

“How do we get proof from someone in prison?” Jessica asked.

“I’ll request a visit,” Christian said. “Tomorrow, first thing. But tonight, we still need those files from the storage unit.”

The storage facility sat quiet and dark when they arrived, security cars parked strategically around the perimeter. Jessica’s mother led them through the maze of units, her hands shaking as she unlocked the door to unit 214.

Inside, dust covered boxes stacked haphazardly, remnants of a life abandoned twenty years ago.

“I haven’t opened this since the day I rented it,” her mother admitted. “I couldn’t bring myself to look inside.”

They began searching through boxes methodically, Christian and Jessica working together while security stood watch outside. Old photographs, forgotten clothing, remnants of a family torn apart by circumstances beyond their control.

Then Jessica found it, a small metal box tucked beneath old blankets, locked tight.

“This looks important,” she said, showing it to her mother.

“I don’t have a key,” her mother said. “Robert never told me what was inside.”

Christian examined the lock carefully. “I can break this open, but we need to be careful not to damage whatever’s inside.”

Using tools from the car, he worked the lock patiently until it finally clicked open. Inside, they found stacks of papers, old letters, and financial documents dating back over two decades.

“This is it,” Jessica breathed, sorting through the papers with trembling hands. “Records of every payment my father made.”

Christian scanned the documents quickly, his expression shifting from concentration to shock as he read further.

“Jessica,” he said slowly. “This isn’t just about your father’s debt.”

“What do you mean?”

He held up a specific document, an old contract with Ellison’s real name printed clearly at the bottom. “This shows your father wasn’t the only person Ellison threatened. There’s an entire list here, other business owners, other families who suffered under his organization’s pressure.”

“Why would my father keep this?” Jessica asked.

“Insurance,” her mother said suddenly, understanding dawning in her tired eyes. “He must have been collecting evidence, planning to expose Ellison eventually, before everything fell apart.”

Christian continued reading, his face growing more serious with each page. “There’s more. Details about how Ellison’s organization actually operates. Names of associates, methods they use to intimidate victims, even records of previous crimes they committed to force compliance.”

“This could destroy him,” Jessica said, hope flickering to life in her chest.

“If it’s authentic,” Christian cautioned. “We need to verify everything before using it against him.”

“How do we verify twenty year old documents?” Jessica asked.

“Lawyers,” Christian said. “Forensic document experts. People who can confirm these aren’t fabricated.”

Jessica’s mother suddenly gasped, pulling out a photograph from beneath the papers. “Look at this.”

The photo showed Robert standing beside another man, clearly captured secretly, the image slightly blurred like it was taken from a distance.

“Who is that?” Jessica asked, studying the unfamiliar face beside her father.

“I don’t know,” her mother admitted. “But Robert wrote something on the back.”

She flipped the photograph over, revealing faded handwriting.

Marcus Ellison Jr. The son who will inherit everything his father built. Watch for him. He’s already more dangerous than his father ever was.

“Marcus Ellison Jr.,” Christian repeated slowly. “The current Ellison we’ve been dealing with.”

“This confirms it,” Jessica said. “He’s not just some random criminal continuing old business. He’s literally the son of whoever originally threatened my father.”

“Which means he probably has personal reasons for targeting your family specifically,” Christian said. “Not just financial motivation.”

Jessica felt a chill run through her body. “Personal reasons like what?”

Christian’s phone buzzed suddenly, interrupting their conversation. He glanced at the screen, his face going pale.

“What is it?” Jessica asked.

He turned the phone toward her, another message from Ellison displayed clearly.

I see you found Daddy’s old files. Clever girl, following the same path your father took. Let’s hope you’re smarter than he was about who to trust with dangerous information.

“He’s watching us right now,” Jessica whispered, looking around the storage facility with sudden fear.

Christian immediately signaled security, who began sweeping the area for any signs of surveillance.

“There,” one guard called out, pointing toward a small camera tucked into the corner of the storage unit’s ceiling, cleverly hidden among old cobwebs.

“He’s had this unit monitored,” Christian said grimly. “Probably since your mother first mentioned it existed.”

“Which means he already knows everything we just found,” Jessica said, her hope crumbling as quickly as it had appeared.

“Not everything,” Christian said, gathering the documents carefully into a secure bag. “He might know we found something, but he doesn’t know exactly what, or how much evidence we actually have against him.”

“Small comfort,” Jessica muttered.

As they prepared to leave the storage facility, loading evidence carefully into secured vehicles, Jessica’s mother suddenly grabbed her arm, panic flooding her expression.

“Jessica,” she whispered urgently. “Someone’s watching us right now. Over there, by the entrance.”

Jessica turned quickly, catching a glimpse of a figure disappearing into shadows near the facility’s main gate, moving with the same silent efficiency Ellison himself had displayed during his break in.

“Security,” Christian shouted immediately. “Someone’s near the entrance.”

But by the time guards reached the location, whoever had been watching them had already vanished into the night, leaving only Jessica’s racing heart and mounting fear that this dangerous game had only just begun to reveal its true stakes.

“I never said her name,” Lira said quickly. “I only mentioned someone using genuine friendship as cover.”“But you looked right at her,” Jessica said, watching Faith’s face crumple with hurt and disbelief.“I didn’t do anything,” Faith said, her voice shaking. “How many times do I have to prove myself to this family? I helped expose Barry. I met with Ellison only once, out of fear, and told you everything about it.”“Maybe that’s exactly what someone playing both sides would say,” Christian said, though uncertainty colored his voice now.“Or maybe I’m just an easy target because I already made mistakes once,” Faith snapped, anger breaking through her fear. “Every single time something goes wrong in this house, everyone looks at me first.”“That’s not fair,” Jessica started.“Isn’t it?” Faith interrupted. “I’ve spent months trying to prove myself, and the moment Lira mentions someone using friendship as cover, everyone assumes it’s me instead of considering other options.”The room fel

“Who sent that?” Christian asked, reading the cryptic warning over Jessica’s shoulder.“I don’t know,” Jessica said, staring at the unknown number. “But it’s not the same number Ellison’s been using.”“A second player,” Arnold said grimly. “Just what this situation needed.”“Maybe it’s a warning,” Jessica’s mother offered. “Someone trying to help us stay cautious.”“Or someone trying to make us distrust the evidence we just received,” Christian said. “Sow doubt so we hesitate to use it.”Jessica studied the documents spread across the table again, uncertainty creeping into her chest. “What if this whole package is a trap? What if using this evidence somehow backfires?”“We verify everything first,” Christian said firmly. “Before acting on any of it.”He picked up his phone, dialing a number Jessica didn’t recognize.“Who are you calling?” she asked.“An old friend,” Christian said. “Someone who used to work in financial crime investigation before starting his own private firm. The prison visiting room smelled like bleach and old coffee. Christian sat across a metal table, waiting as guards led Matt in, his orange jumpsuit hanging loose on a frame thinner than Christian remembered.“Cousin,” Matt said, sitting down carefully. “This is unexpected.”“We need to talk,” Christian said, no warmth in his voice. “About Marcus Ellison.”Matt’s expression flickered, just slightly, but enough for Christian to notice.“I don’t know that name,” Matt said.“Don’t lie to me,” Christian snapped. “Not now. Someone is threatening my entire family, and evidence suggests you might have given him information about Jessica.”Matt’s shoulders sagged slightly. “I wondered when this conversation would happen.”“So it’s true.”“It’s complicated,” Matt said quietly. “Before my arrest, I was digging into everything about Jessica’s father, trying to find leverage against your marriage. I found old records mentioning debts, mentioning Ellison’s organization.”“And you contacted them,” C
