Chapter 1

Author: Joyful Chance
Ever since his wife died saving him during a flight mission, Simon Radcliffe had suffered from severe depression and PTSD. More than once, he had wanted to follow his late wife, Eleanor Marlow, into death.

However, his mother was getting old, his brother, Jeremy Radcliffe, had a terminal brain tumor, and his daughter, Poppy Radcliffe, was only three years old.

Hence, Simon swallowed the pain, gritted his teeth, and held his shattered family together day after day. He carried that weight for three years.

Then one day, he received a last-minute notice asking him to come to the school to complete his daughter's enrollment paperwork.

When he reached the registrar's office, the administrator told him, "Poppy's paperwork has already been taken care of. Her mom and dad came in together to do it."

A sharp pain shot through Simon's chest, but he forced a smile.

"Excuse me? I'm Poppy's father. Her mother passed away three years ago. I have all the documentation right here."

The administrator gave him a strange look, pushed up her glasses, and pointed toward the crowd.

"Her parents just left! They were standing right in front of me, alive and well. You think I'd get that wrong?"

Simon followed the direction of her finger.

In the crowd, a woman was beaming as she held Jeremy's arm and Poppy's hand. It was the wife he had longed for, day and night, for three years.

His ears rang, and his mind went completely blank.

Shaking all over, Simon was about to rush over and demand answers when he collided with his close friend, Kevin Sutton, who had just stepped out of a car.

Kevin took one look at Simon's ashen face and froze. "What are you doing here?

"Well, you've seen it now, Simon, so I might as well tell you. Eleanor never died. She faked her death to get away from you so she could marry Jeremy."

Simon swayed and nearly fell.

Kevin was his best friend in the flight squadron, and Simon had personally recommended him for his current position as squadron commander.

During the last three years of unbearable grief, Kevin had taken him to therapy again and again, listened patiently every time he needed to talk, and stayed with him through all the nights he cried and drank himself numb.

Simon stared at Kevin in disbelief.

"You knew all along, and you never told me? I thought...

“I thought we were brothers."

Kevin sounded a little impatient.

"We are! But Jeremy's dying. The first thing on his bucket list was to have Eleanor as his wife, just for a little while. You love Eleanor more than your own life. If we had told you, would you have willingly given her up to Jeremy?

"Your mom, Poppy, and I all knew. We only kept it from you because we were afraid you'd make a scene, and Jeremy would die with regrets!"

Simon clenched his jaw and bit down on his lip so hard he drew blood.

Years ago, when he went with his parents to volunteer at an orphanage, he and the orphaned Jeremy hit it off the moment they met.

Simon had felt sorry for how frail Jeremy was, so he had begged his parents to adopt him.

Back then, Jeremy had smiled shyly. "Thank you for giving me a family. I promise I'll never try to take anything from you!"

However, Jeremy had now taken his wife. Even his own mother and daughter had kept the truth from him and stood by while he suffered alone for three whole years!

The happy ‘family of three’ was now asking a passerby to take their picture. Simon could not take it anymore. He shook off Kevin's grip, charged forward, and smashed the camera!

Eleanor froze. "Simon? What are you doing here?"

They had not seen each other in three years, yet there was not a trace of longing or love in her eyes.

A sharp pain stabbed through Simon's heart.

"You brought your side piece here to enroll my daughter in school. Why is it so strange to run into her real father?"

Eleanor frowned. "Simon, do you have to put it like that? Jeremy doesn't have much time left. I'm only giving him a family for a little while before he goes. Once he's gone, I'll come right back to you.

"You're his brother. How can you call him something so vile instead of feeling for him or trying to understand?"

"Simon, I—” Jeremy began to explain, but he barely got a few words out before he broke into a violent coughing fit.

When she saw his face flush red, Poppy suddenly ran at Simon and bit down hard on his arm. "You're a bad guy! Papa Jeremy is not a side piece!"

Blood immediately streamed down Simon’s arm. However, as he watched his daughter defend Jeremy, the wound on his arm hurt nowhere near as much as the one in his heart.

The last flicker of hope inside Simon went out for good.

He looked up and met Eleanor's eyes calmly. "You don't need to come back to me. You're already Jeremy's wife, so the two of you can have each other!"

He turned to leave, but Eleanor grabbed his arm, her voice full of pain and helplessness.

"Simon, why can't you just understand?

"I only married Jeremy to grant his dying wish. You're the one I love. You've always been my husband! Why are you holding this against a dying man?"

Simon closed his eyes as a deep, piercing ache spread through his chest.

He was supposed to forgive three years of lies, graciously accept that his wife had become another man's wife, and let his daughter call another man ‘papa’ just because Eleanor pitied Jeremy?

He could not accept it. He would never forgive it!

At that moment, Jeremy spoke weakly. "Eleanor, stop. I've been nothing but a burden to you both! You've already given me three years, Eleanor. I have no regrets left. Today, I'm giving you back to Simon!"

With that, a determined look came over his face, and he charged into the oncoming traffic like a lunatic.

Audra's lips curved into a smile."Owl, I can tell you've opened up these past few months and started a new life."I've fallen for you. Will you give me a chance? I'd like to be part of your new life, and I'd like to be the one who helps you heal."Looking into Audra's gentle eyes, Simon felt his heart begin to race.Five years later, the task force's chief researcher got married and made a point of inviting everyone in the unit to the wedding in Brightwater.Setting foot in Brightwater again, Simon found that he saw the city in a completely different light. He walked with his fingers laced through Audra's on one side and his daughter, Sunny Radcliffe, holding his other hand.He felt grounded and content. The three of them laughed and chatted as they came out of the terminal. Sunny ran ahead and bumped into a man, knocking his coffee from his hand."Oh no! I'm so sorry."Simon quickly apologized, but the man only stood frozen, staring at him, his voice trembling."Simon..."

Simon gave a cold laugh."You're right, Poppy. We do have the same blood. Back then, though, when it came down to me or Jeremy, all of you chose to believe him, and he isn't even related to us."If none of you cared about family then, why should I care about it now?"He turned to leave, not wanting to stay a second longer. The moment he turned his back, a dull thud and Poppy's scream rang out at the same time."Grandma! Grandma, what's wrong?"Kevin rushed over to check on Marian. "This is bad. Her breathing and pulse are really weak. She's having a heart attack. We need to get her to a hospital."Simon faltered for a moment, yet he did not stop walking."Daddy!"Poppy's hysterical voice rang out behind him. "Grandma just collapsed. How can you be so heartless and walk away without even looking back?"Eleanor hurried forward and caught Simon by the arm, her voice trembling with desperation."Simon, I'm begging you, okay?"Marian needs you. Poppy needs you too. Even if you d

After Simon returned to the task force, everything seemed to go back to the way it had been.Audra did not ask a single question or pry in any way. It was as if nothing had happened at all.Simon still trained and went on missions alone every day. The difference was that he smiled much more often now. When a teammate struck up a conversation with him, he no longer slipped away without a word. Instead, he could chat easily for a while. When Audra sat across from him at meals, he no longer wolfed down his food and left. Instead, he eagerly told her all about that day's mission. When others in the unit invited him out, he no longer turned them down. Instead, he went along with a smile."Sure. Count me in."Then one day, just after he finished a mission, Audra called him into her office, her expression grave."Owl, someone wants to see you."Simon was in the middle of pulling off his gloves, and his hands froze.Who else could have tracked him down here besides Eleanor and Kevin,

Eleanor flinched at the mockery in Simon’s laugh. She hung her head like a child who had done something wrong."I'm sorry, Simon. I just want you to know that none of us meant to treat you like that."If you'll just come home with me, I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Can't we go back to the way things were?"At that, Simon laughed even louder, the sound harsh and grating, and his eyes reddened despite himself."Sure, you were all lied to. Eleanor, how do you have the nerve to say you didn't mean it, though?"When I got hit by that car, did Jeremy make you ignore me? No. You were so wrapped up in Jeremy that you never even glanced at your own husband."When Jeremy framed me for hurting Poppy, did he make you throw me into that ring? No. You couldn't stand to see Jeremy cry, so you decided to teach me a lesson I'd never forget."Every word Simon said stabbed into Eleanor's heart like a knife. She covered her face as tears slipped through her fingers."Stop. Even though Simon had his back to the door, his heart lurched. He had known that voice for more than twenty years. There was no way he could mistake it.Eleanor had found him after all.Why would she not just let him go?Eleanor rushed forward and threw her arms around Simon like a woman possessed, holding him so tightly it was as if she never meant to let go."Simon, do you have any idea how crazy I've been going since you disappeared? How could you leave Poppy and me behind and run off to some place this remote?"Her scent and her warmth were both achingly familiar, yet Simon no longer felt that he belonged in her arms.He took a deep breath, pushed Eleanor away with all his strength, and looked at her coldly."Don't touch me. You have the wrong person."Kevin, who had come in right behind Eleanor, was already so choked up he could barely speak. He rushed forward, his face full of anguish. Lying in the hospital bed, Simon let his mind drift, and he suddenly remembered the day he first arrived at the task force.Back then, he had not dared to stay in Brightwater for even a moment, terrified that Eleanor and the others would drag him back to give Jeremy his stem cells. He had quickly contacted the task force and flown in secret to Highmoor on their private helicopter. His body had been far too weak. The moment he met Audra, he blacked out before he could say a word.In his hazy state, nightmares had clung to him. Over and over, he dreamed of Kevin choking him and calling him vicious. He dreamed of Eleanor's eyes full of disgust and disappointment. "Simon, you keep picking fights with a sick man, and you just won't let it go. You're not half the man Jeremy is."He dreamed of Marian disowning him and Poppy wanting nothing to do with him.In his blurry memories, the task force commander had stayed by his side the entire time, instructing the doctors to treat his wounds
