Chapter 2

Author: Joyful Chance
"Jeremy!"

"Papa!"

Eleanor, Poppy, and Kevin cried out at the same instant and lunged forward in a panic to pull Jeremy back.

The car swerved hard to avoid him, spun out of control, and came hurtling straight toward Simon.

Simon's eyes went wide. Before he could get out of the way, the car slammed into him and knocked him to the ground, and its wheels rolled right over his legs!

Searing pain tore through his entire body, and Simon let out an agonized scream.

Passersby rushed over to check on him and call an ambulance, yet his friend, his wife, and his daughter did not so much as glance his way.

They crowded around Jeremy, their voices full of worry.

"Papa, are you okay?"

"Jeremy, I've always thought of you as my own brother! I won't let you do something this stupid ever again!"

Eleanor was so frantic that her eyes went red. "If something happened to you, what would Poppy and I do?"

Jeremy's eyes reddened as well, and his voice broke. "I'm sorry. I never meant to worry you! I owe Simon so much. I just wanted to give a little of it back."

Eleanor's tone grew even more urgent.

"Simon's just upset and acting out! We've known each other for more than 20 years, and he loves me so much. How could he ever bring himself to leave me and Poppy?

"Don't worry. Once I smooth things over with him, he'll come around."

It felt as if a gaping hole had been ripped in Simon's heart, with cold wind howling straight through.

Eleanor was right.

He had once loved her more than life itself because she had been completely devoted to him, too.

When they were little, he had looked at a toy a moment too long, and Eleanor had saved up her allowance for three months to buy it for him, grinning like a fool as she handed it over.

"From now on, whatever you want, I'll save up and buy it for you!"

In high school, when Simon said he wanted to become a pilot, Eleanor, who had been at the bottom of the class, began studying like a madwoman. She pushed herself so hard that she developed stomach problems, all so she could get into the same college as him.

Later, they served as commander and deputy commander of the flight squadron. They worked in perfect sync and became famous as both the best flying partners in the squadron and a model couple.

After they successfully completed their 1000th mission together, Eleanor proposed to him beside the plane. "Simon, let's get married! Let me be your wings and stay by your side for the rest of your life."

Then, three years ago, they hit violent turbulence during a mission flight together.

As a whirlwind dragged Simon's plane toward a ravine, Eleanor broke protocol and released a steel cable, hauling him out of the vortex by sheer force.

However, her own plane lost power, trailed black smoke, and plunged into the ravine right before Simon's eyes.

Just before the signal cut out for good, her soft voice came over the radio. "Simon, remember that I love you."

By the time Simon reached the crash site, all he found was charred wreckage scattered across the ground. Even her body had burned to ash.

They had been childhood sweethearts for 20 years, and Eleanor had long since become a part of him.

Her death took every last bit of his hope with it, and he seemed to age ten years overnight.

For three years, he cut line after line into his arm and swallowed whole bottles of sleeping pills, only to throw them back up.

Every day and night, he was eaten alive by regret, and living felt worse than dying.

He had always believed that he was the one who should have died. Now, how could he possibly accept that all of it had been a lie?

As a tear slid from the corner of his eye, Simon slipped into unconsciousness, consumed by despair and pain.

When he woke up again, he was in the hospital.

Eleanor had slipped a plain band she had made herself onto his ring finger, and the room was filled with all kinds of gifts.

"Simon, I was wrong to lie to you." Eleanor sat beside the bed, her voice incredibly gentle.

"Jeremy's illness has tortured him until he's barely recognizable. I just couldn't bring myself to refuse his dying wish. He's your brother, which makes him my family too. Faking my death was the only way I could keep it from you.

"Simon, I hope you can understand. You're the one I love. Once Jeremy's gone, I'll reclaim my identity right away, and we'll get remarried! After that, we can finally live as a family again."

Simon's heart was dead. No matter what Eleanor said or what gifts she gave him, it would never come back to life.

Without a word, he quietly turned away, took out his phone, and opened an email.

It was an invitation he had received three months ago from a special task force surveying the airspace over remote frontier regions.

Once he joined, his identity would be classified, and he would be cut off from the world on a desolate high plateau.

He had never been able to leave his family and friends behind or give up his dream of flying.

Now, however, everything had changed.

Simon pulled himself out of his thoughts and typed his reply with resolve.

Simon: [I would like to join the task force.]

Audra's lips curved into a smile."Owl, I can tell you've opened up these past few months and started a new life."I've fallen for you. Will you give me a chance? I'd like to be part of your new life, and I'd like to be the one who helps you heal."Looking into Audra's gentle eyes, Simon felt his heart begin to race.Five years later, the task force's chief researcher got married and made a point of inviting everyone in the unit to the wedding in Brightwater.Setting foot in Brightwater again, Simon found that he saw the city in a completely different light. He walked with his fingers laced through Audra's on one side and his daughter, Sunny Radcliffe, holding his other hand.He felt grounded and content. The three of them laughed and chatted as they came out of the terminal. Sunny ran ahead and bumped into a man, knocking his coffee from his hand."Oh no! I'm so sorry."Simon quickly apologized, but the man only stood frozen, staring at him, his voice trembling."Simon..."

Simon gave a cold laugh."You're right, Poppy. We do have the same blood. Back then, though, when it came down to me or Jeremy, all of you chose to believe him, and he isn't even related to us."If none of you cared about family then, why should I care about it now?"He turned to leave, not wanting to stay a second longer. The moment he turned his back, a dull thud and Poppy's scream rang out at the same time."Grandma! Grandma, what's wrong?"Kevin rushed over to check on Marian. "This is bad. Her breathing and pulse are really weak. She's having a heart attack. We need to get her to a hospital."Simon faltered for a moment, yet he did not stop walking."Daddy!"Poppy's hysterical voice rang out behind him. "Grandma just collapsed. How can you be so heartless and walk away without even looking back?"Eleanor hurried forward and caught Simon by the arm, her voice trembling with desperation."Simon, I'm begging you, okay?"Marian needs you. Poppy needs you too. Even if you d

After Simon returned to the task force, everything seemed to go back to the way it had been.Audra did not ask a single question or pry in any way. It was as if nothing had happened at all.Simon still trained and went on missions alone every day. The difference was that he smiled much more often now. When a teammate struck up a conversation with him, he no longer slipped away without a word. Instead, he could chat easily for a while. When Audra sat across from him at meals, he no longer wolfed down his food and left. Instead, he eagerly told her all about that day's mission. When others in the unit invited him out, he no longer turned them down. Instead, he went along with a smile."Sure. Count me in."Then one day, just after he finished a mission, Audra called him into her office, her expression grave."Owl, someone wants to see you."Simon was in the middle of pulling off his gloves, and his hands froze.Who else could have tracked him down here besides Eleanor and Kevin,

Eleanor flinched at the mockery in Simon’s laugh. She hung her head like a child who had done something wrong."I'm sorry, Simon. I just want you to know that none of us meant to treat you like that."If you'll just come home with me, I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Can't we go back to the way things were?"At that, Simon laughed even louder, the sound harsh and grating, and his eyes reddened despite himself."Sure, you were all lied to. Eleanor, how do you have the nerve to say you didn't mean it, though?"When I got hit by that car, did Jeremy make you ignore me? No. You were so wrapped up in Jeremy that you never even glanced at your own husband."When Jeremy framed me for hurting Poppy, did he make you throw me into that ring? No. You couldn't stand to see Jeremy cry, so you decided to teach me a lesson I'd never forget."Every word Simon said stabbed into Eleanor's heart like a knife. She covered her face as tears slipped through her fingers."Stop. Even though Simon had his back to the door, his heart lurched. He had known that voice for more than twenty years. There was no way he could mistake it.Eleanor had found him after all.Why would she not just let him go?Eleanor rushed forward and threw her arms around Simon like a woman possessed, holding him so tightly it was as if she never meant to let go."Simon, do you have any idea how crazy I've been going since you disappeared? How could you leave Poppy and me behind and run off to some place this remote?"Her scent and her warmth were both achingly familiar, yet Simon no longer felt that he belonged in her arms.He took a deep breath, pushed Eleanor away with all his strength, and looked at her coldly."Don't touch me. You have the wrong person."Kevin, who had come in right behind Eleanor, was already so choked up he could barely speak. He rushed forward, his face full of anguish. "Simon, don't say things you don't mean. We've been going out of our minds looking fo

Lying in the hospital bed, Simon let his mind drift, and he suddenly remembered the day he first arrived at the task force.Back then, he had not dared to stay in Brightwater for even a moment, terrified that Eleanor and the others would drag him back to give Jeremy his stem cells. He had quickly contacted the task force and flown in secret to Highmoor on their private helicopter. His body had been far too weak. The moment he met Audra, he blacked out before he could say a word.In his hazy state, nightmares had clung to him. Over and over, he dreamed of Kevin choking him and calling him vicious. He dreamed of Eleanor's eyes full of disgust and disappointment. "Simon, you keep picking fights with a sick man, and you just won't let it go. You're not half the man Jeremy is."He dreamed of Marian disowning him and Poppy wanting nothing to do with him.In his blurry memories, the task force commander had stayed by his side the entire time, instructing the doctors to treat his wounds
