Harper

I had always known my husband was having an affair, but today’s revelation was different.

Unease prickled down my spine as I saw the trending topic on X.

There it was. Number two.

CEO of Hart Finances Ltd., Stanley Hart, is expecting a child with his wife after three years of childlessness.

The woman with Stan in the picture wasn’t me. It was his secretary; the same woman who constantly texted him at late hours; the one he constantly compared me to.

They looked happy, about to clink their glasses. Stan never showed me off to the public. Our marriage had always been secret because he emphasized on how camera- unworthy I was.

Not fit for the wife of a billionaire. But she was: with her perfect figure and glowing skin, they looked meant for each other.

‘She’s pretty,‘isn’t she?’ The hairdresser’s voice made me glance up.

‘Who?’ I asked.

She gestured to the picture on my phone. ‘Stan Hart’s wife, the woman in the picture.’

‘Oh…’my chest grew tighter.

‘He’s so lucky to have a woman like that,’ another hairdresser chimed in.

‘But of course he’d go for someone that beautiful,’ another hairdresser added. ‘Imagine him ending up with someone…’

Plain. Boring. Third class. That was how Stan always referred to me, compared to his Barbie doll of a secretary.

I wanted to scream at all of them, telling them I was the real wife. I was the one who endured three years with Stan, not the woman in the picture.

But I didn’t. Instead I paid for my hair and left the salon quietly.

Twenty minutes later, I arrived at the beautiful house Stan and I lived in the black Cadillac Stan had gifted me during our first anniversary.

My chest ached as I remembered how everything had been going well for us during that first year.

Stan had been my teenage crush and I’d stare at him as my mom cleaned the house.

Sometimes I’d sneak into his room when he wasn’t around just to get his smell from his shirts.

What started as harmless fun with the maid’s daughter had turned into something serious, and then I got married to my crush with a pregnancy that I hadn’t planned for.

My chest tightened even more as I reminisced on the good days.

The maids and cook greeted me warmly as I entered the house, but something wasn’t right.

I caught a whiff of an unfamiliar perfume as I walked to the master bedroom I and Stan slept in.

I was stunned when I opened the door.

On the bed sat Amy, wearing my dressing robe.

Stan was quite open about his affair with his secretary but he never brought her to the house.

Until now, it seemed.

‘Why are you in my room?’ I walked towards her, disgust clearly etched on my face.

‘Oh. You haven’t heard?’ She arched a perfectly lined brow. ‘Stan and I are going to have a baby.’

‘Doesn’t answer my question,’ I clenched my fists, ready to wipe that smug expression off her face.

‘I’m staying here now. The baby and I need a good environment,’ she stood up and got closer to me. ‘Something you wouldn’t understand, you barren bitch.’

I snapped and shoved her. She fell to the bed and immediately let out a scream.

Abruptly, the bathroom door opened and Stan emerged with only a towel around his waist.

‘Harper, what the hell!’ He raced towards us and helped Amy up immediately.

‘She hit me, Stan. I think I need to go to the hospital… ah! The baby!’ Amy gave out exaggerated gasps.

‘I didn’t hit her. I-‘

‘Shut up Harper!’ Stan turned to me with rage in his eyes. ‘So you thought it was a good idea to kill my child?’

‘You bringing her to our home shows you have absolutely no respect for our marriage,’ I yelled at him.

‘Marriage? And you think I’m proud being married to someone as plain and barren as you?’

‘But you never complained…’

‘I provided for you and that sickly mother of yours,’ he growled. ‘You should thank me every day you wake up in this house. Women like you don’t survive outside men like me.’

I gasped.

‘Amy’s carrying my child now. So you will show her some respect, understood?’

I understood and I knew he did too. He was using his money to blackmail me into being an obedient puppy.

Not this time.

I walked out of the room and called Mr Andrews- the family lawyer.

I had already begun the divorce process for over a year now without Stan’s knowledge, but I haven’t dared to sign the papers.

This was more than enough to summon my courage.

Later that night, as I lay on the bed in the guest bedroom, I held the divorce papers in my hand, ready to sign.

But it didn’t feel right.

I walked towards our bedroom, ready to wake Stan up and try to win him back. Surely he must still love me.

But as I approached, I could hear the soft moans and grunts from within.

They were making love, on our marital bed.

My throat choked with tears and I ran quickly to the guest room. Without blinking an eye, I appended my signature before the tears wet the paper.

The next day, I waited until they left before sending the mail to Stan in his office.

Somewhere in my heart, I wanted to believe he didn’t want me to leave. He wouldn’t sign the papers and we’d resolve any issues we had.

And as the papers arrived back home to me without wasting time, my heart leaped for joy.

Of course Stan couldn’t sign the papers; he didn’t a divorce. Not like this. He still loved me.

I opened the papers and checked the space for his signature:

He had signed, along with a check of a thousand dollars.

For three whole years of marriage.

I had thought the pain I would feel would make me scream in agony, but I didn’t. I held the papers calmly in my hands, my chest ready to burst open with all the grief bottles up.

No love, no asset; just a thousand dollars.

And deep down, a chilling thought settled:

What if walking away from him was the most terrible decision I had ever made?

HarperI didn’t stop him.Even when I remembered the agreement; the emotional impact it would have on me later on.I didn’t stop him because I didn’t want to. I was wet, shivering and my body ached for more of his touch, his lips…‘Xavier…’ I whispered his name again, a silent plea building up within me.‘Don’t do that,’ his voice dropped. ‘Don’t say my name like that unless you’re ready for what comes next.’I raised my hands to his chest, feeling his body hard under that wet clothing. He was so close I could feel everything: from his musky scent to how hard he was. And I wanted it all.He drew closer, as if testing how far he could go. I felt his lips before they reached mine, and it almost did.‘Xavier!’ Terese’s voice called out from outside the bedroom, followed by a sharp knock on the door.We paused, our breath coming in shallows.Xavier looked at me, his eyes still dark and wanting. I also wanted more, even if I shouldn’t.‘Xavier!’ Terese called out again.‘Coming,’ Xavier r

  • Faking It With The CEO   Chapter Eighteen

XavierIf there was one thing I was sure of, it was that nothing was certain. And driving over to meet me my father, that belief struck again like the Tower clock at midnight.Father had called me for an important discussion this morning, and although my anxiety had skyrocketed, I had composed myself enough to linger at home before going there. An hour to two of lateness could count as good composure. Stan was already there when I walked into the office, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window. When he turned and saw me, a sneer spread across his face, but he remained calm and controlled as usual.‘You’re late,’ my father’s voice cut through the room before I could say a word.‘Traffic,’ I slipped my hands into my pockets.‘You’re never one for giving excuses, Xavier,’ he didn’t look up from the file in front of him. ‘Don’t start now. Sit.’Stan ambled towards me, an amused expression on his face. Of course, he was enjoying this.As we both sat side by side, Father closed the file a

HarperThe flowers that arrived the next morning were unprecedented. After signing and receiving them, I carried them to the kitchen where Xavier was having his breakfast, and Terese was still conjuring up something from the pot.‘I didn’t know your mom sends you flowers,’ Xavier laughed.‘It’s not from my mom,’ I groaned as I placed the flowers on the counter.‘Well, don’t add them to my food,’ Terese turned to glare at me.‘I’m sorry,’ I shifted it away from her. ‘So who sent it?’ Xavier asked.I checked around the wrapping until I saw a piece of cars stacked with a string. It read: HI. IT’S THE GUY WITH THE GLASSES. HOPE THESE MAKE YOU SMILE. YOU LOOKED LIKE YOU NEEDED IT-JOSH.‘It’s from a friend,’ I said to Xavier, a small smile tugging at the corners of my lips. The flowers were a mixture of daffodils, pink carnations, and light purple lavender sprigs. They weren’t much but they were beautiful.‘So we’re having friends now?’ Xavier’s tone lost the joke it had once carried w

Harper ‘Xavier Blackwood was a terrible choice, Harper.’I looked at the picture of me and Xavier Melissa showed me on her phone. It was taken last night, with the ring glittering on my finger. The ring I still wore.‘I have my reasons,’ I looked away, feeling Melissa’s eyes still on me.‘You know I’d always look out for you, Harps,’ Melissa said. ‘Still in that same circle of family? Horrendous idea.’‘At least mom’s bills are being paid,’ I avoided her gaze.‘There would’ve been other ways than getting engaged to him, Harps. Where was he anyway? I never knew Stan had a brother.’‘I didn’t either,’ I shook my head. ‘He just appeared out of the blue and…’‘All the more reason why you should know this is a bad idea; because whatever reason made him go extinct at that point must have been a very good reason.’‘He didn’t go extinct, Mel. He just…didn’t exist then…’ those words came out as a question.‘The Prince of Wales would’ve been a better choice than a twenty-first-century Casanova

  • Faking It With The CEO   Chapter Fifteen

XavierI had wanted her more than I’d wanted any other woman. Her scent, her soft moans, the way her smooth hands moved her around my body…It was invigorating. And I wanted more. With the frustration eating up inside me, I left the guest room and walked straight to our bedroom- as she had called it.Our.I was ready to take her, feel her in places I’d never felt her, make her lose control. But once I opened the door, I noticed she had fallen asleep on the bed, the robe she wore showing more skin than I could stand. She looked so calm, beautiful, almost like something ethereal. Seeing her like this made me wonder how Stan could fathom hurting someone like this. But, of course, he didn’t love her. He never did. Harper didn’t know it yet, but I was the reason he had married her in the first place.Because of me.I gently covered her with the duvet, and headed to the other side of the bed. But I couldn’t sleep; I needed a drink so bad.Even if it was just a sip. After few minutes of batt

  • Faking It With The CEO   Chapter Fourteen

Harper I had walked away again, and I regretted it. All my life, I had walked away from confrontations; even my marriage. But I knew this last time I should have stood up for myself; I should have looked Mrs. Hart in her face and said what needed to be said. But I had simply walked away. With a deep sigh, I hugged my hands around my body, feeling the night air brush my skin with a light chill. Sitting on a bench, overlooking the city’s night landscape, I felt a bit better. Calmer. I didn’t know what to think anymore, so I decided not to reminisce and just enjoy the view. ‘You look like you’re about to freeze.’ I turned around at the sound of a male voice, and I saw a man standing behind me. His metal-rimmed glasses flickered in the street light, and although he was tall, he stooped over a bit as he spoke to me. ‘I’m fine,’ I shook my head, but I was done talking before he pulled off his coat and draped it around my shoulders. ‘There you go,’ a faint smile passed his lips. ‘W

  • Faking It With The CEO   Chapter Nine

HarperIt wasn’t just the words that made me stiffen. It was his smirk; the people around, the way his father shifted uneasily in his seat while all their eyes focused on me. They were all looking at me, waiting to see my reaction. It was almost like the last time…I turned to Xavier, but he kept

  • Faking It With The CEO   Chapter Eight

Harper The first thing I noticed was the sunlight. It poured like liquid gold through the windows, forcing me to squeeze my eyes shut.I hadn’t slept this long in months, and the feeling left a pleasant heaviness in my body. When I finally opened my eyes again, the bedroom around me slowly came in

XavierI knew I was stalling, but I had half expected her to change her mind afterwards. So when Craig told me she was waiting in the living room, I didn’t know how to respond at first.Hell, I still didn’t know how to act when I saw her sitting by the edge of the couch, her fingers curling around

  • Faking It With The CEO   Chapter Ten

XavierI had shared a bed with different women, all willing to satisfy my needs, but my body never responded to them the way it did when she was near.I couldn’t sleep all through the night. I was aware of the woman lying next to me, her breathing coming in and out softly, her fragrance drifting so
