LOGINOne year later, Alyssa stood in the middle of the ballroom. She was stunning, and her dark hair shone under the light.
“To think they'd get married. Is Clara going this far for a couple of gold?” Alyssa muttered, twirling her wine glass. The whole room had a holiday style to it. It was a month till Christmas, and the marriage was to happen on Christmas Day. Alyssa smiled. The 25th of December was her birthday, and Clara knew this. This was always her plan, to take the attention away from Alyssa. Clara soon spotted her, and she was walking over. “Alyssa, is that you?” With the deliberate way she called Alyssa’s name, she pulled the attention of the high level, gossiping parade around her. Everyone knew about the girl from a year ago, the one who had begged for love. Clara's smile didn't reach her eyes. Seeing the incoming crowd, Alyssa straightened up. Her plan was in motion. “Hey, waiter, please can you help me out for a moment?” she smiled at the man beside her. Wasn't he too handsome for a waiter? especially that sharp jawline? “Focus, Alyssa.” She looked at the incoming bridezilla before turning to her hired boyfriend. Alyssa smiled at him. “You’d pretend like you know me for a moment,” she said, stuffing some dollar notes into his front pocket. Tipping forward slightly, she placed a kiss on his cheek. Then someone coughed, as if interrupting them. Clara gave a small smile. “Alyssa. I'm so glad you could make it. How did you get an invitation card, please?" Then she looked at Conner, and there was a hint of concern in her tone. “Darling, did you send Alyssa a card?” But Conner wasn't paying attention to her, his eyes narrowed at the man beside Alyssa. “Don't tell me I'm not invited to my own sister's engagement?” Alyssa raised her wine glass to her lips. The way she spoke casually seemed like an insult to Conner, and he erupted. Taking a step closer, he said in a voice that was low and furious, “I can't believe you haven't changed, Alyssa. You are still as disgusting as ever, and it's been a year.” He raised a scrutinizing gaze to the man beside her. “You are sleeping around with a mere waiter? Have your standards dropped to the same level as your minuscule dignity?” Conner smirked, pleased by the fact that she could amount to nothing without him. Alyssa tightened her hold on the wine glass. Just before she could say anything, the waiter stepped forward, his posture straightened. He was three inches taller, so his presence bore down on Conner. "Who do you think you are calling a waiter?" He curled his lips. "I didn't think the first son of the Winters Family would be this displeasing." His voice was calm, but strangely elegant. Conner raised a brow, who did this man think he was? And why did he look so familiar? Even Alyssa looked up, wasn't this waiter playing his role a little too well? Seeing how the tension was taking her moment, Clara frowned. She hated that this sister of hers didn't know when to back down. "It's fine, Conner. Alyssa has always tried to reach our level. Don't undermine her efforts. Besides, we have an engagement to focus on, darling," she said, rubbing his arms soothingly. Conner smirked and pulled her closer. "You are right, darling. There's no way she'd pick up the pieces of her nonexistent life in minutes." A chuckle rang out, and Alyssa stepped forward. "My life is no longer your business. I only came here to greet Granpapi. I'm sure he'd love to see me." Conner's face twisted when he heard that name. His grandfather loved Alyssa, so it was obvious what she wanted to do. He wasn't going to let her. "You would leave here now, Alyssa. You have nothing to do with my family." Alyssa's smile widened, and Conner instantly had a bad feeling. A light flashed in the centre of the large ballroom, attracting everyone's attention, followed by a recording. 'Hey, Granpapi, it's Alyssa. I'm sure you must have wondered about my whereabouts. I'm sorry I kept you worried, but I didn't leave your grandson. Instead, he betrayed me, cheated on me, and drove me out.' The recording was loud enough for both families to hear, and it was followed by the scene that happened a year ago. Grandfather Winters, who was seated at the upper level, almost crushed the arm of his chair, hearing how disgraceful his grandson had been. That naughty boy had told him his beloved Alyssa ran away when she was caught stealing the company's files. When the video stopped, Alyssa's voice came again. 'Grandpapi, I couldn't abandon you without giving you a reason. Thank you for all your help, but I have severed all connections with the Winters Family.' Conner's eyes went red, and he turned to Alyssa. "You—Alyssa, you can't do this. After everything I did for you? You can't be this ungrateful. Tell grandad that it was all for humour now, and that you were drunk!" Conner said, and he grabbed Alyssa's hand, pulling her to his grandfather. However, he felt an iron grip on his arm. It was the waiter again. "Take your hands off her. Now!" Conner quickly stepped back. Who exactly was this person? "Alyssa, why are you doing this to me?" Clara stepped forward, tears were already flowing from her eyes. "If you hated me this much, why do you have to twist the truth to grandfather? You could have told me if you still loved Conner. I'd have let you marry him instead." Her voice was shaky, and she continued weeping. But unlike the guests, Alyssa wasn't fooled. "I don't love Conner anymore, Clara. As a matter of fact, Mother always told us to give our used toys to the less-privileged, so Conner fits you best," Alyssa said with a soft smile. Clara, "...." Conner, "...." The guests, "...." Alyssa placed her wine glass down. "I wish the couple a good marriage, and I hope Santa puts them on the naughty list," she said with a soft gaze, masking her pain. "I'd take my leave now as I can't keep my boyfriend waiting."Clara was so pissed that she didn't say anything throughout. In fact, she went to another lane.Alyssa stood, choosing her jewelry. The sales attendant suddenly came by, “Ma'am. I have something that would go exactly with your new dress.”“Oh please lead the way.” Alyssa smiled at her. Before long, a pristine gem stone stood in front of her.The earrings and the necklaces were perfectly crafted to an expert level. This was perfect for her and it looked very simple too.“Please pack it up.” The whole trip to the shop was exciting. And when Alyssa was done, she decided to go to her company. It would be good to check up on Joshan now.She had told the man to be the face of the company, but her expert computer skills were still needed in building some of their deal-breaking machines and code.“Have we gotten a buyer for the CD-S22.” Alsysa said as she walked down the hall with a file in her hand.“Not yet. The older CEOs are barely concerned with technical things and technology. They bel
Alyssa walked into a store, holding the card tightly in her hand. “What dress would I get?” She asked herself. Her fingers brushed lightly over the sleek surface of the black card, as if reminding herself that this was real. On a normal day, she couldn't care less about getting a dress, but Harrison wanted her to. And maybe, deep down, she wanted his eyes to remain on her on that day. To see that quiet admiration in his gaze. So she'd definitely pick the best dress. Joshan had picked this place for her, saying it was one of the best. The store was filled with elegance, soft lighting bouncing off polished floors, racks lined with exquisite designs that whispered luxury. But anytime Alyssa's eyes scanned the price tag, “It's so expensive.” She bit down on her lips. She wasn't used to spending such an amount on a single day. Even with the card in her hand, her instincts still resisted it. “What is wrong with you? Can't you watch where you are going?” Someone had bumped into A
The phone rang shrilly, and this time, Alyssa didn't waste time picking it up. Before she could even speak, Harrison took the phone from her hands. “Good day, Dutch.” He said into the phone. On the other side of the call, the hand that held the phone instantly paled. Harrison sat down on the bed, his lips curving into a calm, confident smile. “I'm sure you are surprised I know your name,” Harrison said. Dutch wasn’t the only one surprised—Alyssa was flabbergasted too. Maybe she had underestimated Harrison. This man was a billionaire. Of course, he would have certain advantages. “I might be cancerous and bedridden now, but never think of me as weak, especially when you try to blackmail my wife.” Harrison’s tone was brutal, cold, and unwavering. Earlier, when his guards informed him that a man had escaped, he had instructed them to let him go, hoping the man would lead them to his higher-ups. But this Dutch fool had been reckless enough to threaten his wife. “I
“Alyssa.” Harrison looked at her. It was a look that meant that he could already spot that something was wrong. "What's going on? was it a bad call?" Harrison was quick to throw in the questions. “It’s okay, Harrison. It's nothing really.” Alyssa said, standing up. She wanted to get fresh air, and maybe find a way to think. She had to leave immediately. The space choked up and with the way he looked at her. Her chest tightened and her pulse raced. She might blurt everything out. “I need to speak to the doctor. Maybe I can find a way to get him to release you earlier.” She pushed the right buttons with her words and Harrison brightened up. A faint smile appeared on his lips, though the worry in his eyes remained. He thought it was best not to push her yet. “Okay, I'd wait for you.” He said. Alyssa nodded and walked out the door. As soon as she was outside, she shut the door and leaned on it, sinking into a nightmare abyss. Her legs trembled, and she felt like collapsing on
Harrison was moved to the hospital and then the doctors began the next therapy session. Clear tubes carried the medicine slowly while machines beeped around him. Alyssa had escaped from the drilling questions given to her by the media with the help of Kate. Even now, echoes of flashing cameras and invasive questions lingered in her mind. They had questioned her relationship with Harrison to which she publicly denied. There was no way she would let another creep into their family, because she was married to the man. She sat in the doctor's office. Her hands rested on her lap, fingers slightly intertwined. “Mrs Alexander. Your husband is strong but he still needs all the strength he can get. You shouldn't allow him to do some strenuous work. Going out…” The doctor paused and then his face darkened. His expression shifted from professional calm to clear disapproval. “No, sneaking out of the hospital wasn't the wise decision.” The man continued. Alyssa coughed, hiding the chuckl
The applause inside the Supreme Vida Hall had not died down. Alyssa completed her final turn on the runway and walked back behind the curtain. The moment she stepped backstage, the models and assistants surrounded her. “That was incredible!” “You owned that stage!” “The designer is going to love this!” Compliments poured in from every direction, but Alyssa barely processed any of them. Her mind was still stuck on the moment she saw Harrison in the audience. He was supposed to be in the hospital. Yet he had come. A warm feeling spread through her chest. Kate rushed toward her and grabbed both her hands excitedly. “I knew it! I knew you would crush it!” Kate said proudly. “You should see the reaction online right now. Everyone is talking about you!” Alyssa smiled faintly. Her eyes drifted toward the stage entrance again. “I saw him,” she said quietly. Kate blinked in confusion. “Who?” She asked, until a realization dropped in her heart. Alyssa confirmed it with the nex
She had decided to stay up and wait for him, only for the clock to hit midnight. Harrison still was not back. “I should not expect much.” She rubbed her arms before heading back to her room. If he wanted to stay with his ex, who was she to refuse that? Especially when she would leave in eighteen
“Kate, I do not think I can get out of this bet.” Alyssa was on her bed, talking to the one person who made her feel safe. “Why do you want to leave? This was really good for you, Alyssa. What about Conner and Clara?” Kate asked. “I would leave the city after the gala. Run away from Harrison. Get
“Watch your words, Helda. It is my wife you are talking about,” Harrison’s frown deepened. Helda scoffed. “You do not understand, Brother. It happened the first time, and it will definitely happen again. Women like this are gold diggers.” “I have more than enough gold for her to dig, Helda. What i
At first, Alyssa widened her eyes, and then she shook her head. “I don't need your money, Harrison,” she said, turning back to her laptop. Seeing her defiance, Harrison's frown deepened and he turned her face back to him. “I am your husband. Your concern is mine. And you don't have to pay me back
