Chapter 4

Autor: Washing Wheat
I stared at her blankly. I had used my hair, my blood, and my bone marrow to keep this man alive, and in the end, I was the vicious one.

"That's enough, Evelyn. Please don't hit Elio anymore," Hudson said weakly from the sofa. "This is all my fault. If I just died, you two wouldn't be fighting."

Evelyn immediately turned to soothe him. "Don't talk like that. I said I'd save you, and I will."

She turned around and pulled a medical kit out from under the coffee table. It was full of needles and blood collection tubes. She tore open the packaging with practiced ease and walked toward me.

"We'll draw 200 milliliters of blood today to keep Hudson going. As soon as the match results come in tomorrow, we're going straight to the hospital for your bone marrow."

I looked at the long, thick needle in her hand and backed away on instinct. "I'm not doing it."

Evelyn's eyes turned hard. She grabbed me by the collar, shoved me down onto the sofa, and pinned me there. "You don't get a say! You owe me this, Elio! If I hadn't taken you in, you would've starved to death on the street a long time ago!"

She tied the tourniquet tight around my arm with practiced hands. The cold needle pierced my skin and slid into the vein. I watched dark red blood run through the clear tube and into the collection bag.

As the blood drained out of me, I felt the warmth leave my body little by little.

It was cold, just like the starless night I had first fallen into the mortal world.

When the draw was done, Evelyn carried the blood bag down to the freezer in the basement. Only Hudson and I were left in the living room.

Hudson sat up straight on the sofa. The weakness vanished from his face, and open mockery took its place. He strolled over to where I lay slumped on the floor, stretched out one long leg, and nudged my limp legs with his foot.

"See? So what if you're some kind of angel? To her, you're nothing but a walking blood bag."

He crouched down and lowered his voice. "Elio, I actually feel sorry for you. Want to guess where she'll dump you once she's drained the last of your marrow?"

I lifted my heavy eyelids and looked at his greedy face. "You'll pay for this."

Hudson let out a scornful laugh. "Pay for it? All I know is that I'm the one who's winning."

At that moment, the front door opened again. Adeline walked in carrying a first aid kit. She did not glance at Hudson. She went straight over and knelt beside me.

She looked at my red, swollen cheek and my bruised arm, and her eyes filled with pain. "Elio, does it hurt?"

She took out some ointment and dabbed it onto my wounds bit by bit. It felt cool and eased the pain a little.

I looked at her. "Why didn't you help me earlier?"

Adeline's hand paused. She looked up, and there was something obsessive, almost unhinged, in her dark eyes.

"See, Elio? Evelyn doesn't love you at all. She hit you and took your blood for another man.

"The world out there is too cruel. It's only me, Elio. I'm the only one who truly cares about you. Just be good and give Hudson your marrow, and let go of Evelyn for good. After that, you'll belong only to me, okay?"

The cool ointment on my wounds suddenly felt fake. I shoved her hand away. "Don't touch me."

The tube of ointment fell from Adeline's hand and rolled to the edge of the coffee table. She was not angry. She only looked at me with those endlessly gentle eyes. "Are you still mad at me, Elio?"

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 14

The clouds began to churn, and faint golden light flickered among them. I knew the passage to take me home had opened."Nothing." I turned my gaze back down, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather. "It was only a judgment that came three years too late."I turned and walked out one step at a time. The crowd parted on its own, leaving a wide path for me.Just as I was about to step through the hospital doors, Evelyn summoned the last of her strength. She scrambled out of the crowd and shouted at my back."Elio! If... If we could start over... If I had never brought Hudson home, if I had always treated you the way I did that first year... Would you... Would you have stayed? Would you have been my husband for the rest of my life?"Her voice was full of desperate pleading and one last shred of hope. She was trying to use "what if" to cover up the wrongs she had already done.I stopped walking, but I did not look back. I only turned my face slightly and left her with

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 13

"Did you really think acting devoted could cover up how selfish you are? You kept saying you loved me, but you never cared how much pain I was in."What you wanted was never me. All you wanted was a plaything you could control, something that depended on you completely."Adeline was drenched in sweat from the pain, but she still stared at me, her eyes full of an obsession that would not let go."That's not true... I do love you... If it weren't for you, I would've frozen to death under that bridge when I was eight! You gave me a second chance at life, so why shouldn't you be mine?"I looked at her and gave my right hand a light flick. A streak of golden light shot into Adeline's forehead.Adeline's whole body jolted, and her eyes suddenly lost their focus."Since you miss that bridge so much, I'll take back everything you've gained in this world. Go back to being the beggar who was about to freeze to death."The moment the golden light sank into her forehead, it was as if her so

She clutched her chest, as if a gaping hole had been torn through it.On the gurney nearby, Hudson was barely breathing. He struggled to turn his head, and his eyes, which had always been so calculating, held nothing but endless fear."Elio... Save me..."He reached out a skeletal hand toward me, his voice as shrill as a lost soul's. "If you don't save me, Evelyn will kill you!"He was still trying to use Evelyn to threaten me.I walked unhurriedly over to the gurney and looked down at his face, now covered in age spots from how fast he was aging. "Kill me?"I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Evelyn, who was still on the ground, clutching her finger and howling. "She can't even stand up right now. How exactly is she going to kill me?"Hudson was desperate. He suddenly threw himself off the gurney and wrapped his arms tightly around my ankle."I was wrong! I'm begging you, give me back my life! I don't want your clothes anymore, and I won't try to take Evelyn from you either! Ju

I looked down at Evelyn, who was kneeling at my feet. "Why?"I tilted my head, my voice full of innocent curiosity, just as it had been when I first arrived in the human world. "Didn't you say he had a terminal illness and would die, while I was an angel and couldn't?"Evelyn nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes! So save him! Nothing will happen to you!"I smiled, and it was a dazzling smile. "But I already died just now."I pointed at the patch of concrete where I had fallen. "Besides, the reason he's like this now is that I took back all the life I blessed him with before."I watched Evelyn's pupils widen and spelled it out word by word. "I've taken back the life I gave him.""You!" Evelyn pointed at me, her eyes wild with rage, as if she were looking at a monster. "You're so vicious! How could you be this cruel?"I raised my foot and brought it down on the finger she was pointing at me, grinding it without mercy. There was a sharp crack."Ahh!" Evelyn let out a piercing scream.I

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 9

Both women were flung backward and slammed hard into the hospital lobby's glass doors. The glass shattered with a piercing crash."Ugh..." Evelyn clutched her chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood. She stared at me in shock, as if she could not believe that force had come from me."Elio... What are you doing?"Adeline struggled to her feet, one hand pressed to her shoulder. Her delicate gold‑rimmed glasses lay shattered across the floor, and her eyes were full of disbelief. "Elio, did you just hit me?"I walked slowly toward them and looked down at the two mortals as if they were insects. "I told you before. I won't be anyone's cure, and I won't be anyone's caged bird."My voice was calm, yet it carried a weight no one could resist. "Evelyn, you took my blood and my bone marrow and told me I owed you. Now I have paid that debt with my life."Adeline, you used that so‑called light to guilt me and tried to lock me in a cage. Now that light has gone out."I watched their faces g
