ELARA'S POV

The house was quiet.

Everyone had gone to bed. The Vipers were at the compound. Maria was asleep in her room upstairs. Anastasia was in the guest bedroom, finally sleeping through the night without screaming.

Elara stood at the kitchen sink, looking out the window at the dark garden. Her hands were dry. Her shoulder ached.

She turned away from the window.

She walked through the back hallway, past the pantry, to the narrow door that led downstairs. The basement. The one Knox had sho

ELARA'S POV I woke up smiling. That was new. I didn't wake up scared. I didn't wake up reaching for a knife. I just opened my eyes, and the sun was on my face, and the bracelet was warm on my wrist. It didn't move. It didn't slide. It was part of me now.Knox was already gone. He left a note on his pillow. Went to the compound. Back by dinner. I love you.I read it three times. Then I put it in my nightstand drawer. I am keeping them all now. His notes. Proof that he came back.I was still lying there when the door burst open."Get up, bitch!" Kathy flew into the room like a hurricane. She had coffee in one hand and a garment bag thrown over her shoulder. She was wearing a dress so short I worried about her underwear. Her blonde hair was piled high. Her lips were bright red."We have work to do," she said.I sat up. "What time is it?""Time to get married." She dropped the garment bag on the bed. Coffee sloshed onto the sheets. She didn't notice. Or she didn't care. "Well, not today.

  • FORBIDDEN AFFAIR WITH THE BIKER I CAN'T HAVE    CHAPTER 188: THE BRACELET

KNOX'S POVI woke up before the sun was even up.Elara was asleep beside me, her face turned into the pillow, her good arm thrown across my chest. The scars on her back were healing better. It was even more than I realized, and it filled me with so much sorrow that she suffered so much. I didn't move. I lay there and watched her breathe. I counted her breaths. Ten. Twenty. Fifty.I had something in my pocket.I'd been carrying it for three days. A small torch. A silver solder. The tools to close the bracelet she'd worn through hell and back. It was loose on her wrist, and I had the overwhelming urge to fix all her bad memories; I wanted to take it away. I pulled on jeans and a shirt and went downstairs after hours of watching my Elera. The house was empty. The Vipers were at the new compound. Kathy had taken Anastasia into the city for women stuff. Maria was in the kitchen, humming.I sat at the table with my coffee, the torch, the solder, and the little clamp I'd bought from a j

  • FORBIDDEN AFFAIR WITH THE BIKER I CAN'T HAVE    CHAPTER 187: THE PHONE CALL

KNOX'S POVThe phone rang at three in the afternoon.I was in the study, going over numbers I didn't care about. Even though I didn’t care about the company, it doesn't change the fact that my father built it with his sweat. And even if I didn’t like him, I’ll keep it running. I picked it up. "Yeah.""Mr. Reyes." It was my lawyer, Chen. "You need to come to the office. Now.""I’m busy.""Victoria made a move. She went to the feds this morning. And she contacted a journalist in London. She's talking about the auction. And the club- we have no idea how such information got to her, sir"My hand tightened on the receiver. The plastic creaked. "I'm on my way."I hung up. I sat there for a second, breathing slowly. Then I stood, grabbed my jacket, and walked out.Marcus was waiting by the car. He didn't say anything when I got there. He opened the door. I got in. We drove in silence.Chen sat at the conference table with three folders spread out like a hand of cards. He looked nervous. He

He's down there, he had said. Wrapped up nicely. Waiting for you.She opened the door. The stairs were wooden and old. They creaked under her feet. The air got colder with each step she took. It smelled like concrete, damp, and something else. Fear, maybe. At the bottom, she reached for the light switch. A single bulb flickered on.Dmitri was chained to a metal chair in the center of the room. His hands were cuffed behind him. His ankles were bolted to the floor. He was still

ELARA'S POVI stood in front of the mirror and took a deep breath. My hands were shaking. I wiped them on my jeans, then on my shirt, then on my jeans again. Nothing helped. I looked at myself in the glass. My hair was down, brushed out, falling past my shoulders. I wore a simple blue dress Knox had bought me. It was soft. It had pockets that I liked. But I didn't look like me. I looked like a girl playing dress-up. A girl who was supposed to be happy and normal and whole.I wasn't whole. I was in pieces. I was glued, and tape and Knox's hands held me together at night when the bad dreams came.Knox had dropped me two blocks back. I'd asked him to. I didn't want him idling at the curb like a guard dog while I did this. I didn't want it to be about him, or the club, or the men who followed me everywhere now. For one hour, I wanted to be a girl meeting an old friend for coffee. That was all. That was everything. My phone buzzed.I picked it up. It was a text from Kathy. I could see her

  • FORBIDDEN AFFAIR WITH THE BIKER I CAN'T HAVE    CHAPTER 184: THE GARDEN

KNOX'S POVThe grass was wet under his boots. Morning light cut through the trees, bright and sharp, but the air was still cool. Knox walked with his hands in his pockets, his shoulders tight, his jaw working like he was chewing on something bitter.Marcus followed him quietly not knowing what to say at first. "Knox," Marcus said.Knox didn't stop. He kept walking, toward the back wall, toward the old fountain that hadn't run in years."Knox," Marcus said again, louder.Knox stopped. He turned around. "What?"Marcus looked at him. His face was the same as always…calm, careful, the face of a man who had built a life out of managing other people's chaos. But his eyes were different. They were scared."You can't be serious," Marcus said. "You can't throw everything here away."Knox stared at him. "I'm not throwing anything away.""Yes, you are." Marcus stepped closer. His voice dropped, but it got harder. "You know this is the reason I didn't want to tell you about Elara in the first p
