The tears wouldn’t stop. Sky sat alone in the dimly lit closet, her knees pulled tightly against her chest, her head buried between them. The muffled sound of her soft sobs bounced off the closet walls, wrapping around her like a suffocating fog.

Her entire body trembled as if grief itself had taken residence in her bones. She pressed her palms to her ears, as if that would somehow make the pain disappear. But it didn’t.

She kept replaying the image of Jace and Eden sitting together in their home, the home she once believed was hers alone. The thought made her stomach twist with rage.

He hadn’t just invited Eden into their house. He’d made her see to it that dinner was served. He’d given her the same hospitality he’d denied Sky for months. The same warmth that had made her fall for him once upon a time.

Her jaw tightened, tears spilling faster.

What did he even see in her? What was so special about Eden that he c

Eden lay sprawled across her bed, staring blankly at the faint pattern of the ceiling. The gentle hum of the city filtered through the partially opened window, mingling with the distant whoosh of passing cars and the occasional barking of a restless dog on the street below. Nights in San Francisco had a particular rhythm that was mostly soft. She had left Haley’s home a few days ago and returned to her apartment. Tessa had also moved out as well. She had just finished a long call with Haley and Tessa, relaying every single detail of what had happened during the dinner with Jace. She hadn’t sugar-coated a thing. From how Sky had kept her distance, how Jace had performed his usual charm act, and how the air in that house felt like a cage wrapped in silk.“So, Sky is a victim now?” Haley’s voice had been measured, almost too calm. That was how she sounded when she was restraining herself.“Serves her right.” Tessa sc

The dinner had gone far too smoothly for Jace’s liking. He had spent most of the evening talking, boasting, really, about everything he’d been doing in San Francisco since she left. He spoke about business expansions, of deals that made the local news, and of parties hosted at this very house. His voice rolled on and on, confident and controlling.Eden sat opposite him at the long oak dining table, her attention not on him but on the meal in front of her. The room smelled of fresh rosemary and seared salmon, the kind of pretentious meal he’d always preferred. She ate slowly and carefully and only responded to his monologues with small nods or an occasional noncommittal hum. It was a tactic she had learned over time: don’t give him fuel, just let him talk himself out.She tilted her wrist subtly and glanced at her watch. 8:15 p.m.She’d promised Kyrell she wouldn’t stay longer than forty-five minutes. He’d been texting, reminding her to keep to their plan. And she had already crossed t

Eden stood by her bedroom window, her gaze fixed on the man who had been stationed outside since morning. The man leaned casually against a lamp post, wearing khaki shorts and a striped navy jacket, today. When he noticed her, he raised a hand in greeting. Against her better judgment, she waved back, her lips curling into a faint smile. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She turned from the window and grabbed it.“Hey, Baby,” she answered softly.“Finally.” Kyrell’s voice came through the line, tinged with both relief and concern. “I’ve been trying to reach you for over fifteen minutes. Where were you?”“We were downstairs having breakfast,” Eden replied. “I’m so sorry; I left my phone upstairs.”Kyrell exhaled. “I had Luke keep an eye on you. I couldn’t reach you, and… well, I’m not taking any chances. I told you I wasn’t going to l

The shattering sound did not come from the crash but from the sharp sound of Haley’s voice as it sliced through the air.“You agreed to have dinner with him?” She practically yelled, the coffee cup in her hand slipping slightly, splashing onto the marble countertop.Tessa, who was casually perched on a stool at the breakfast bar, nearly choked on her turkey sandwich. She blinked twice, then raised an eyebrow at Eden.“I don’t know why you’d do something like that, but if you must go, then we’re coming with you.” She declared, wiping the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. Eden leaned back in her chair, her tone calm and measured.“Come on, girls. It’s just dinner. I’ll be fine. It’s not like it’s some secret date. I’ll be at his house, probably with Sky there too.”“With Sky?” Haley’s voice increased by several decibels; her disbelief was almost comical. “You’re joking.”“Calm down, Haley,” Eden replied, taking another bite of her fluffy scrambled eggs. “I told him I’d have

The scent of sautéed garlic and butter drifted through the air, filling the warm kitchen with a delicious aroma. Haley stood by the island counter, wearing one of Mrs. Bellamy’s floral aprons. A soft hum escaped her lips as she plated fluffy scrambled eggs, just the way Eden loved them.Beside her, Tessa, still half-asleep, leaned against the counter with a yawn. She lazily reached for the stack of clean dishes to help set the table.“I made scrambled eggs,” Haley said with a grin, brushing a strand of hair away from her face.“Where’s Mrs. Bellamy?” Tessa mumbled through another yawn, rubbing her eyes.“You need to snap out of that sleepy fog, young lady. It’s too late in the morning for that,” Haley teased, letting out a small laugh.Tessa crossed her arms, feigning a look of disbelief.“I can’t believe this is happening. You’re lecturing me about getting up ear
