A Different Victory

My skates dug into the ice as I pushed myself off hard, the cold air hitting the little skin my gear left exposed, my lungs already burning. I could already feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, setting my heart into a familiar, chaotic beat.

I picked up speed.

“Captain!”

I looked right just in time as Mason sent the puck flying towards me.

My stick caught it.

Perfect.

I pulled it in and kept moving, controlling it from one side of my blade to the other as I crossed the blue line. One of their defensemen came for me immediately.

Big bloke. Twenty-three. He lowered his shoulders as we got closer to each other.

I almost smiled.

He slammed into me hard enough to rattle my fucking teeth, but I’d already shifted my weight. My shoulder drove back to his, my skates scraping across the ice as I tried to stay upright.

The puck slipped ahead.

Fuck!

Twenty-three went for it, but I was faster.

I pushed off, caught the puck, and controlled it before his stick could reach it. Someone shouted a warning from my left.

Another white jersey was coming. Two of them.

Perfect.

I dragged the puck towards me, changed direction, and slipped through before they could close the gap.

The crowd erupted. I barely heard them.

All my focus was fixed on the net.

The goalie dropped slightly, watching me, waiting to decide which direction I would shoot.

I moved left. He did the same.

I smirked. “Got you.”

At the last second, I snapped my wrist and sent the puck flying to the right. It flew past his glove. The red light flashed. The horn blared through the arena, and the place fucking exploded.

“YES!”

Mason crashed into me first, nearly sending us both into the boards as the rest of the boys surrounded us, slapping my shoulders and helmet.

“You beautiful bastard!” Ethan yelled, hitting me harder.

Outside the rink, he wouldn't have been this free, but that’s what being in the rink does to you: it loosens something in you.

I smirked. “I know.”

But the smugness only lasted approximately three seconds before my eyes moved into the arena. They found her immediately. And once again, our eyes were glued. She was on her feet, cheering, not in some subtle way. But in the way you cheer when you care.

I grinned straight at her. She rolled her eyes away. A laugh burst out of me before I could stop myself.

“Captain!”

My eyes snapped to Ethan before he caught me.

“What?”

“Are you planning on getting back to the game or flirting with someone in the stands?”

“Piss off.”

His gaze snapped towards the stands. I grabbed the back of his jersey and yanked him around before he could find her. Not like he would know it was her.

“Eyes on the fucking game.”

He scoffed. “Mine were!”

Prit.

We moved back into position. But something had changed in me. I could feel that. The exhaustion that had been slowly creeping into my legs was gone. The ache in my shoulder from where twenty-three had hit me had vanished. I could feel fire leaking through my skin. I could feel her eyes on me even though they were a thousand eyes on me.

And before the game resumed, I knew: I was now going to play to impress her.

I rolled my shoulders and lowered myself slightly as the referee approached.

Across from me, their center glared at me. “You look happy, M’Call.”

I tilted my head. “Do I now? I wonder what might be the reason.”

He bared his teeth at me. “Let’s fix that attitude of yours.”

I smiled around my mouthguard. “Give it a go, mate.”

The puck dropped, and I went for his throat.

Figuratively.

Mostly.

~.~

We won. Of course we did.

As my team celebrated and the crowd cheered, my eyes searched for one person. When my eyes found her, my heart almost stopped.

She was cheering, but it was different this time. She had the wildest smile I've ever seen on her face. And she wasn't just standing; she was jumping, clapping, laughing like she’d won something, too. And that… that beautiful smile only widened even more when our eyes found each other again.

I thought she might look away or stop cheering since I caught her like that, but she didn't. She went on, her cheeks flushed with happiness, her eyes bright with a light I've never seen before, crinkled slightly at the corners.

This time, I felt a different kind of victory in my chest.

“Did you see that?” my eyes asked her, my cheeks aching from how hard I was smiling. “Did you see how marvelous I played?”

“I did see,” her eyes answered. “But maybe try not to look so smug about it, you prick.”

I found myself laughing again. My teammates thought it was because of the outcome of the game. The crowd thought the same. But only my heart knew it was because of the wayward angel who has rocked my world without warning.

At that moment, with the sound of a thousand cheers and my heart still racing from the adrenaline, I vowed I was going to win her heart.

I was going to win it no matter what.

~.~

I couldn't wait for the dinner to be done so I could go home. Not my apartment, but her home. They were waiting for us to have our dinner, but I was just waiting to see her again.

“I think Jackson was flirting with his piece of heaven back in the arena,” Ethan said, across from me, already stupidly drunk.

“Yeah, I noticed it too!” Collins, another teammate, added. “He had stars in his eyes!”

I said nothing, and just sipped my beer slowly.

“Tell us about this piece of heaven you’ve found,” Mason slurred from beside me, throwing his hand around my shoulders. The alcohol had made him relaxed and stopped him from being so shy.

“This one is all mine, mate,” I said as I dropped my beer and picked up my keys. “And you bastards are keeping me away from her.”

I shot up to my feet, and they broke into cheers and roars.

“Go, Jackson! Go find heaven between her legs!”

“Don’t wear her out and let her lose that piece of heaven!”

“I want to find my piece of heaven too!”

“Bastards,” I muttered as I left the bar.

There was a smile on my face as I drove to my wayward angel.

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Today's Joy. Tomorrow's Pain

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Repented And Born Again

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed
