Never Again

“Look at yourself, Siri. Do you honestly think that someone like me could love you? Do you think anyone, for that matter, could love you? No. You’re fucking pathetic, and will only ever be a plaything. You were a bet. An easy one. So clean those tears and get out.”

I remembered the pain in my scalp where he had gripped my hair. I remembered the burn in my eyes as I sobbed. I remembered the pain, the humiliation, and vowing to myself, “Never again.”

I remembered that vow again today as I looked into another's eyes, as I looked at another handsome face. I remembered it when I was starting to falter. It sent a shock up to my brain, and I snapped out of it.

I ripped my hand away from him and shot to my feet. I pointed to the door, my teeth bared. “Get. Out.”

He remained on the floor, staring up at me with a tight expression. His head lowered as he sighed, his hand passing through his hair. He stood up, tension in his jaw even as he said, “I’m sorry.”

“Out,” I snarled, still pointing at the door.

He nodded, turned, and walked to the door.

But before he left, he turned back to me, a look I couldn't decipher in his eyes, and then he was gone. When the door closed behind him with a soft click, my legs gave out, and I crashed to the floor, my chest burning.

“Don’t ever forget,” I choked out, hitting my chest. “Don’t ever, ever forget, you fool.”

But how could I? Even though I wanted to, how could I?

That was the darkest part of my life. A time when I was drowning, and there was no one to pull me out. Sure, I pulled myself out, but I almost gave up and just let the water fill my lungs and take me. So never again. I wasn't going to fall for another handsome face again.

I wasn't going to think about Jackson. I wasn't going to think about how this night had made me burn.

~.~

But it was fucking hard not to think of my stepbrother when everywhere you turned at school, he was all they were talking about.

“I have never seen anybody play hockey like that.”

“He looked so hot, God!”

“I couldn't stop myself from drooling!”

Girls, boys, even the professors talked about him.

It was fucking hell.

I wanted to yell and tell them to shut up.

I was trying hard not to think about last night.

Not to think about that dark, sexy look in his eyes, or the slight shake in his deep voice, or the bulge in his pants that even to this very moment I could still feel in my hand. I didn't want to think about what he said of him fucking someone else while still thinking about me.

I refuse to think about that.

I released a breath as I splashed water on my face, looking at my face in the mirror. Bags under my eyes screamed that I hadn't slept last night. Even my braid wasn't as tight as it always is.

I was a mess.

“See?” I whispered. “This is what happens when you let a man into your life. Don’t, okay?”

But then… his words from last night wouldn't stop haunting me. Those words: “I’m looking, and I still want you.”

They kept replaying in my head, and my eyes trailed from my face and down to my body.

I was wearing a large brown sweater and black high-waist pants. But no matter how tight or high-waisted the pants were, they couldn't hide the roundness of my stomach. And the tightness of the pants did nothing to hide my thighs.

“Yeah, right,” I muttered, my voice hard as I turned away. “Yeah, fucking right.”

I picked up my bag and was about to leave the restroom, but then Sandra walked in.

I paused as our eyes met, and held.

In the past, I might have looked away, kept my head low, but not anymore. When she said nothing and just watched me with that harsh gaze, none of that fake nonsense from that day visible, I kept walking.

I was about to walk past her when she said, “I heard your father got married again.”

I paused, not turning to her.

She went on. “What number is she? Wife number three?”

“Four,” I corrected, my voice giving nothing away.

She scoffed harshly, turning to me, her eyes filled with bitterness. “Do you have no shame?”

I looked into her eyes. “None. But tell me, Sandra, what should I be ashamed of? Did I kneel with my father and propose to the women? Did I confess my undying love to them? What crime have I committed except being his daughter?”

“Exactly that,” she shot, getting riled up, when I was the one being bullied.

I scoffed as I turned away from her. “Maybe if I had had the option of choosing my father, and chose a dick like him, then that would have been my crime. But since I didn't, I believe I'm innocent.” I walked away. “Find a new way to try and make me miserable, Sandra. That shit is getting old and boring now.”

I left the restroom, sighing through my nose. Maybe I should move out of town? But I had no money, so I'd have to endure at least for now, and till I graduate. Then I would leave this stupid town and never look back.

As I walked down the hall, I saw him, surrounded by people, and yet he wasn't even paying any mind to them.

His attention was on his phone, his expression flat. But then I saw a slight tension in his jaw, and he raised his head. His eyes met mine, that flat expression falling away and giving way to something almost… tender.

I looked away from him and kept walking. As I walked past him, I still felt his eyes on me, but I didn't turn my head, even as I could feel my heart slamming against my ribcage, as if saying, “Look at him, stupid.”

“You’re the stupid one,” I muttered under my breath as I kept walking. “You’ve always been the stupid one.”

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed

“You good, mate?” Jacob asked as he sat beside me and handed me a cup of hot chocolate. I took it without a word, cupping my hands around the mug and staring at the steam. He said nothing for a while, just drank his beverage, and then said, “The game is tomorrow, you know.”My shoulders stiffened. I heaved a sigh, sipping the hot drink, but I barely tasted anything. “Yeah,” I said, my voice scratchy from lack of use. “You haven't slept, haven't eaten anything. How are you going to play like this? Don’t expect us to go easy on you because you were our captain.” He said it as a joke, nudging my shoulder with his, but I remained silent, unmoving. He sighed deeply, placing his mug down and turning to face me. “Listen here, mate: it’s not your fault. It’s neither of your faults. You both have a shitty past, and she’s been hurt, yeah, but have you ever done anything to hurt her?” He didn't wait for an answer he wasn't going to get and just went on. “Sure, you were a fuckboy just three

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Hands Made Of Feathers

JACKSONI haven't moved for an hour or two. It might be three. I don’t bloody know. I sat on the bench by the bar, my eyes fixed on the glass of liquor in front of me. A glass I haven't touched since it was placed in front of me. Usually, I would have downed the drink just to try to numb these painful feelings in my chest. But no. No, I wanted to feel them all. I wanted them to burn. I wanted them to hurt. Jacob has been sitting beside me since the-however-long hours I've been here, but he hasn't said a word, just nursing his drink. I wish he would say something. I wish he would call me a bastard or a fool. Why? I didn’t know. I just needed something to hurt. I needed it to hurt even more. He suddenly shifted beside me, going tense. “What the bloody fuck do you want, Toria? Here to push the knife in deeper?”“Calm down, J. I just need to talk to him.”“Well, he doesn't want to talk to ya. Piss off.”“Did you love her?” she asked anyway, and Jacob was already shaking with anger, wh
