FOUR YEARS AGO

I was covered in sweat by the time I pushed the double doors to the locker room, my harsh pants shaking my chest from how hard I had run here. My phone burned in my pocket, the text I had gotten from Michael echoing in my head like a gunshot.

Mike: I don’t think this is working, Siri. People stare at me everywhere I go because they know I'm dating the daughter of a con man. It’s almost like they think I scam people too! I’m sorry, but let’s call this off.

Me: What?! Michael, please don’t do this to me! I love you. You know I do! We can make this work. I’m not my father, and you're not either. What they say doesn't matter when we have each other, right?

Mike:

Siri, my reputation is at risk here. I have so much to lose as the captain of my team, so much responsibility on me.

Me: Please, Mike, I'm begging you. Don’t do this to me. We can make it work. We can date in secret if that’s what you want. Just don’t leave me, please. I’ll do anything, I swear.

Mike: This is something we should talk about in person. Come meet me at school right now. I’m in the gym locker room.

It was ten at night, but I hadn't hesitated to throw on clothes and sneak out of the house, even though my father wouldn't care where I was going so late at night. He doesn't care about anything when it comes to me, and yet everywhere I go, everyone I meet seems to care that I was Marshall James' daughter.

Everybody saw him before they saw me, and now he was about to ruin my relationship.

Never in a thousand years would I have thought that a popular, handsome guy like Michael would look my way. Never would I have imagined that he would be interested in me, and we would even have sex.

I wasted no time giving my virginity to him when he asked for it. I never questioned it when he asked for sex just in the first week we started dating. The sex had been painful and not all that enjoyable like I've heard people talk about, but to me, it had been magical.

He had been magical.

He said he loved me. He had whispered it into my ears, and looking into his eyes that were filled with pleasure, I knew it. I knew he really loved me, and I loved him even more.

So him wanting to end things now because of my father was ruining me; it was breaking me in ways I never thought I could be broken. I couldn't. I couldn't lose Michael. He was the only bright thing in my life right now.

So I rushed into the locker room, panting and sweating, my heart beating so fast I feared it might stop. I looked around, but all I saw were rows of black lockers lining both walls, with wooden benches in front of them.

My heart sank when I didn't see him.

Did he leave already? Did he decide it wasn't worth it, and was just going to end things like that? Oh God, please no.

“M-Michael?” I called, my voice shaking, my hands pressed to my chest. “Mic–”

“In here!” his voice called out from the bathroom stalls, and relief hit me.

I released a breath as I ran towards it, pushing the doors open.

“Please, I–”

My words died in my throat when I saw he wasn't alone. There were three of his teammates with him, all of them standing with their arms crossed, and a look on their faces that sent a shiver down my spine. I turned to Michael, who was leaning against the wall with his hands shoved into his pockets, and his legs crossed at the ankle.

My heartbeat picked up when I saw the look in his eyes, but still, I slowly made my way towards him.

“M-Michael. Y-you said we should talk.”

He didn't push off the wall, didn't move any closer, and just stared at me with that dark look in his eyes that was scaring me.

“I did,” he said, and even his voice sounded different.

That should have set off alarms in my head and made me turn and run out of here, but my legs were glued to the floor, and I just kept staring at him, waiting for that softness and light to return to his eyes, his voice. But the darkness there only seemed to spread.

“I did call you here to talk, but I didn't say talk with our mouths. Or…” His lips lifted into a smirk. “With clothes on.”

His teammates behind me snickered, and I flinched when I felt them coming closer to me. My body was shaking now; everything in me was screaming at me to run, but I didn't move, just kept staring at him, pleading with my eyes.

“I-I don’t understand, Michael.”

“Y-you will soon, my pretty girl,” he said, mimicking my stammer, and my cheeks heated as his teammates joined in his laughter and mockery.

He finally pushed off the wall, his hands still in his pockets as he slowly made his way to me. When he got close, his hand reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his knuckles brushing against my heated cheek, and I leaned into that touch.

“You said you would do anything to save our relationship, right?” he asked softly, and I nodded without hesitation, my heartbeat slowing down for a second. “Then do this for me, Siri.”

He grabbed my shoulders and spun me suddenly, turning me to face his mates who were now standing too close to me, all grinning, and my heartbeat thundered in my ears.

Michael leaned in, his lips brushing against my ear as he whispered, “My friends here want to see what the hype is all about. You see, I couldn't stop talking about the taste of your pussy, and they all think I'm lying.”

His hand moved up my stomach and cupped my breast, and I gasped, my eyes wide, fear and panic making my entire body tremble.

“So why don’t you help your man out and prove my innocence.”

He pushed me, and his friends caught me, their hands moving all over my body.

Panic made me nauseous.

There were too many hands. Too many voices, and laughter. I screamed, I begged, I threatened. I fought until my body stopped listening to me. And Michael watched it all with a grin, with a camera to capture everything.

That night, I lost my voice.

And half of my soul.

Jackson doubled over, his eyes almost popping out of their sockets, his face turning red in a blink. He wrapped his arms around his stomach, shooting me a hard, shocked look. “Why the bloody fuck would you do that?!” he yelled, his voice cracking on a cough. I got on my feet, staring down at him, my chest heaving. “Why the bloody fuck did I do it? Because, you idiot, here I am confessing my feelings for you, and you’re still saying I’m not real?!” I clenched my fist, fighting the urge to hit him again. “So I fucking hope that punch confirms that I’m not a fragment of your damn imagination. I hope you choke and drown in alcohol, asshole!” I turned, heading towards the door. “I hope the hangover threatens to kill you, and maybe it will–”His arms came around my waist, and he pressed me to his chest, his head placed on my shoulder. “My Siri,” he whispered, his voice trembling, and a rock got stuck in my throat, my hand hovering over the doorknob. “My love.” “Am I real to you now,

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    You're Not Real

I looked into the room, at Jacob, who was staring at me as if he'd just seen a ghost, at Toria, who looked a bit guilty, and back to the room again. “Oh, thank hallelujah!” Jacob literally cried. “I think I might be going bald from all the hair I've been pulling!” “You can curse me later,” Toria said softly. “Pull my hair if you want to—though I can't promise I won't fight back—but please just get your man off the floor before he pukes on my expensive carpet, and I might forget the love I have for him and just dismember him.”Said man was sitting on the floor, his upper body naked, his eyes half shut, and his face the color of a tomato as he tried to wrestle a bottle of whiskey from a fed-up Jacob. “I love him, Siri,” Jacob grumbled, “but I might crack his head op–”Jackson perked up suddenly, his eyes going wide, and the fog clearing there for a second as his head snapped to the door. When his eyes landed on me, they went even wider. And then he smiled, a smile so wide I could cou

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Today's Joy. Tomorrow's Pain

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my
