Darkness.

That's all there is at first. Thick, suffocating darkness that wraps around me like a shroud.

I try to move, but can't. Try to speak. Can't do that either.

Am I dead?

The thought drifts through the blackness, detached and distant.

Maybe this is what death feels like. Nothingness. Absence. Just... void.

But then pain registers. Distant at first, like an echo. Then sharper. More insistent.

My ribs. My jaw. My entire body screaming that I'm broken.
