"You're smiling." Gabby narrowed her eyes at me as we stepped out of the boutique, shopping bags hanging from both our wrists. "I'm not" "You've been smiling for the last five minutes." "I have not" She folded her arms. "You're thinking about a certain grumpy Mr. Expensive." "I absolutely am not." She gave me a look that screamed liar. I chuckled lightly trying to get her to stop talking but before she could tease me again, I casually glanced at the reflection in a nearby shop window. There they were. Two men. One pretending to study a display of watches. The other scrolling through his phone. Neither of them was interested in shopping. They were interested in me, it was too easy to tell. I almost laughed. "What?" Gabriella asked. "Nothing." I kept walking. "Just... don't look behind you." She immediately tried to look behind her. I grabbed her arm. "I literally just told you not to." Her eyes widened. "Someone's following us?" "Two someones." "Oh my God." "Relax." "They could be dangerous!" "They're not." "How do you know?" Because they work for Viktor. I didn't say it out loud. Instead, I smiled to myself. So... sending Romanov to tail my car while I was on my way to the boutique this morning wasn't enough. They decided to keep following my every move with this bunch of hobos. I couldn't even be annoyed. Yesterday when I returned from visiting Nana and found Viktor's office door standing wide open. The first thing I thought was... That's strange. Viktor wasn't careless. He wasn't the kind of man who left confidential files lying around for anyone to find. Then I saw the documents spread neatly across his desk. It was too obvious. It was practically screaming "look at me" I don't think he knows that I know about the cameras. I had seen enough of them around the mansion to know they covered almost every hallway. There was no way his office wasn't under surveillance. I immediately knew it was a trap. I knew it the moment I stepped inside. I also knew Viktor expected me to take the bait. So... I did. I picked up the files. Pretended to study them. Even took photographs with my phone... just to give him a show. I knew he was watching me through the cameras. It took every bit of restraint in me not to look at one of them and smirk. I mean how dumb did he think I was? Ugh. The fact he thought he could easily trap me was irritating me just thinking about it. I was one of the best detective. I might not be perfect but there was no way I would have fallen for that trick. Anyways sometimes the best way to fool someone was to let them think they had fooled you. The corners of my lips lifted. I hoped he'd enjoyed the performance when he was watching the cameras... "What are you smiling about now?" Gabriella asked. "Nothing." "Liar." We continued walking through the shopping mall, stopping every now and then to browse different stores. As we rounded another corner, someone familiar caught my eye. Natalia. She stepped out of a luxury jewelry store carrying several expensive bags. She wasn't alone. A man in a blue suit walked beside her, speaking quietly as they headed toward the escalator. Before I could get a better look, they disappeared into the crowd. I frowned. Something wasn't right. Was Natalia going out with another man? While still trying to get Viktor? Sometimes I try to understand the woman but I just can't. We hadn't crossed paths in the last two days and that was nothing but relief for me. Breakfast was more peaceful. Speaking of breakfast, Natalia hadn't been at breakfast this morning or yesterday. In fact now that I thought about it she was hardly ever at the mansion. She was constantly leaving or constantly returning late. Always with some excuse. At first, I'd assumed she simply enjoyed going out. Now I wasn't so sure anymore. "What is it?" Gabriella asked. I kept watching the direction Natalia had disappeared. "Do you ever get the feeling someone's hiding something?" Gabriella laughed. "You are literally a cop and a detective, you never tell me anything about that life" "Fair point" I sighed Still... Something about Natalia bothered me. A lot. But that was something I'd figure out another day. By the time I returned to the mansion, the sun had already begun to set. The shopping bags felt heavier than they had a few hours earlier. I had caught the two guards following me when Gabriella left and I gave them my shopping bags to carry instead. The moment I stepped inside, one of the guards approached me. "Mr. Svyatoslav is waiting for you" Of course he was. I found Viktor in the living room, seated comfortably with a glass of whiskey in one hand. He looked up as I entered. "You took your time." "I was shopping." "I noticed." I raised an eyebrow. "You noticed?" His lips twitched ever so slightly. "I receive reports." Right. The two bodyguards. "I hope they enjoyed carrying my shopping bags." "They complained." "Good." A hint of amusement flashed across his face before disappearing. His expression turned serious. "We're leaving in two days." I frowned. "Leaving?" "For a vacation." I stared at him. "You?" "Yes." "You take vacations?" "Occasionally." That was somehow harder to believe than him smiling. He set his glass down. "Everyone is going." "Everyone?" "Anya, Natalia, My security team." His gray eyes settled on mine "And you." I blinked. "Me?" "You heard me." "I wasn't invited." "You are now." "I don't think that's how invitations work." "They do in this house." I sighed. "So I don't really have a choice." "No." He stood, adjusting the sleeve of his shirt. "Pack for a week." "Where are we going?" A faint smile appeared on his face. "You'll find out when we get there." Before I could protest, he walked past me and disappeared upstairs. I stared at his receding body. A vacation. With Viktor. Natalia. Anya. And an entire team of armed bodyguards. How was I supposed to explain to Commissioner Harris that I was leaving the country... with the man I was supposed to arrest?KATHY 3 days later we were back in the US. I was very glad to be back. Being attacked wasn't part of the vacation specifications and I didn't like that very much even though I had caught the rat. Viktor had killed him without even thinking twice. Would he do the same to me when he finds out who I really am? I had better start making escape plans just in case. The drive back to the mansion somehow felt heavenly. Three cars, Viktor and Romanov in one, Natalia and Anya in the other and I in the last car. It was peaceful. I looked at my arm which had healed enough that I no longer needed a bandage, though the scar was still there. I would have to wear long sleeve shirts to visit Nana. It would be hard to explained that my life was at risk at my employer's home. The car I was in finally came to a stop last. Anya and Natalia had already gone inside while I walked behind Viktor who was many steps away from me. The moment I stepped on the foyer, I saw Zuri. "Kathy" he gre
KATHY"Call the doctor."Viktor's voice was calm, but everyone moved immediately.Romanov gave a short nod before disappearing down the hallway.I looked down at my arm. The adrenaline had worn off, and the burning pain was becoming harder to ignore. Blood had soaked through my sleeve, staining my shirt.About 15 minutes later, the doctor arrived. He cleaned the wound, stitched the cut, and wrapped my forearm in a neat white bandage."It isn't deep," he said. "You'll be sore for a few days, but you'll be fine. I'll give you some painkillers"As soon as he finished, Viktor looked at me."Go get your things."I frowned."My things?""We're leaving."I stood up to leave but Anya wouldn't let go. So we both went into my room together and I packed my bags. I didn't leave anything behind. We also went to Anya's room and picked some of her clothes and stuffed toys inside her school bag and we both went downstairs.Viktor took one look at my bag and back at my face.I shrugged. KATHYI knew something was wrong the moment Viktor said we were leaving the country. "A vacation" was what he called it. Although the few days I had been here had been beautiful so far, something just didn't feel right. I could feel it. I wish I could just know what was happening. But my best guess was that the Mafia was under attach. The security around Viktor had doubled since we'd arrived. Romanov was constantly on the phone. Guards rotated shifts more frequently than before, and Viktor himself rarely relaxed, no matter how calm he appeared.Which made it all the more reason to believe that they were having some kind of fight. Would running away for a week really protect us? That afternoon, I wandered through one of the quiet hallways, hoping to clear my head, because something just kept nagging at me.I heard voices through a half-open door."...I've told you before."It was Viktor's voice.I stopped involuntarily.I wasn't trying to eavesdrop or anything.I had every intent
VIKTOR I hadn't stopped thinking about yesterday. It was becoming a problem. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Katherine diving into the pool without a hint of hesitation. The moment she came back out of the water in her swim suit, I knew all hope were lost for me. I wanted her. Beautiful. Dangerously beautiful. I let out a quiet sigh and rubbed a hand over my face. I had meetings to think about. A war brewing back in New York. Shipments that needed rerouting. Enemies who wanted my head. Instead... I was thinking about Katherine. Pathetic. I left my room and walked down the hallway toward hers. Just as I was about to knock, I heard laughter. Not just laughter. Her laughter. "...Gabby, stop!" she giggled through the phone. "No, I'm serious!" She laughed again. "I am not blushing!" A smile threatened to form on my lips. It disappeared the moment I realized I was smiling because of a woman talking on the phone. Ridiculous. I knocked o
KATHYI had never been on a private plane before. The moment I stepped into Viktor’s private plane I immediately realized we lived in twice completely different worlds. The cabin looked more like a living room in a 5 star hotel than an airplane. The whole seats where made of black leather. And everything else looked just as expensive.I sat on one of the seats at the back, pretending like this was all normal to me but it wasn’t.Anya had no problem at all though. She bounced on the seat beside me like she had been doing that all her life, which I was sure she was.She looked at me smiling then she eagerly grabbed my hand and started showing me around while Viktor discussed something with Romanov near the front area.I watched them for all of two seconds before turning my attention back to Anya. I already knew something was wrong the moment he said we were going on vacation. I just didn't know what.Nana wasn’t happy about me leaving the country when I told her I wouldn’t be around for

KATHY When the car came to a stop I looked out the window then froze. My house. My actual house? A chill ran down my spine immediately. How did he know where I and Nana lived? I looked at him and a small smile creeped up his lips. He knew what I was about to ask. I decided to bru
KATHYI opened my eyes groggily, for a moment I had no idea where I was.I was in a bed that was not mine and that was the first problem. The second problem was that the sheets were too expensive. The sheets would cost higher than my rent... If I paid rent. The third problem was that I sat down too
VIKTOR Most people bored me. Politicians. Business men. Criminals. They all bored me. They all wanted something. Money. Power. Revenge. The only difference was how honest they were about it. I was sitting in the bar exactly 11 minutes before she walked into the bar. She was trying not to lo
