Chapter 1

Autor: Zoe Lynch
The wind was raging, as if it wanted to tear the whole world apart. I was helping with exterior wall repairs on the twelfth floor of a high-rise when I happened to glance through the window. That one glance shook my world.

My wife, Bailey Hannold, who was supposed to be on duty at the hospital, was inside the apartment, wrapped tightly in the arms of her ex-boyfriend, Derek Crane. They were kissing like they couldn’t bear to let each other go.

Inside, everything was heated and intimate—a contrast to the howling wind outside. My heart felt like it had been ripped open, and a cold chill flooded me.

“What the hell are you doing?”

I slammed my fist against the window in fury, desperate to break up the disgusting scene in front of me. The thick glass muffled my voice, but the heavy thudding at least caught their attention.

Up on the roof, one of the guys heard the noise too, but he thought I was signaling him to lower the safety rope. By the time Bailey and Derek pushed open the window to look down, I was already being lowered to the ninth floor.

Derek looked worried as he asked her, “Bailey, do you think he saw anything? Is he going to use this to blackmail us? I mean, you are a married woman…”

Bailey let out a dismissive laugh.

“Please. These broke, powerless construction workers get shaken easily. We should cut his rope and teach him to mind his own business… and keep his mouth shut.”

Derek hesitated. “Isn’t that taking it too far?”

Bailey shot him a harsh glare. “What are you afraid of? What can he possibly do to us?”

With that, she grabbed a kitchen knife and started sawing at my safety rope.

The wind was already whipping me around, and with the rope getting thinner and thinner, I was on the verge of falling to my death. Terrified, I swung wildly, trying to find any foothold or surface to steady myself.

The ridiculous sight made Derek burst into laughter. “Look at him! He looks like a clown doing some over-the-top stunt in a circus!”

Wanting to entertain him even more, Bailey dug into the rope with extra force.

I shouted with everything I had, hoping someone would hear me. Alas, the roaring wind was too loud. All I could do was slam myself against whatever parts of the wall I could reach, creating noise so the workers above would lower me further.

It worked. Slowly, they lowered me toward the fifth floor. Unfortunately, by then, the safety rope had been cut so badly that it finally snapped in two. My body dropped instantly, just like a kite that had lost its string.

The wind screamed in my ears as I fell. Faintly, I could still hear the manic laughter coming from the twelfth floor. The overwhelming weightlessness wiped out every thought in my mind.

Then, my body crashed into the ground with a violent impact. It felt like every bone in me shattered at once. Pain shot through me like sharp knives, spreading from my right leg throughout my entire body.

I could feel the bone in my right leg break. The agony was so intense that I couldn’t stop myself from groaning. Sweat and tears poured out uncontrollably, soaking my clothes in seconds.

The betrayal, the despair, and the sheer physical pain twisted together, slicing through my heart. I couldn’t believe my wife, the woman I loved so deeply, could be so cruel. The same woman who once promised me forever was now the demon who threw me into hell.

With both my body and my heart crushed, I sank into overwhelming darkness.

Bailey’s death sentence was scheduled surprisingly fast. Before that, our divorce went through smoothly. When I went to the prison one last time to get her signature, the scene was almost tragic. She sat there with empty eyes and messy hair, looking completely unhinged. As I handed her the documents, she didn’t say a word; she just took them and signed. However, her hand was shaking so violently that she could barely hold the pen. After signing it, she suddenly grabbed my hand. Tears poured down like a broken dam.“You still won’t forgive me, honey? If you don’t forgive me, they’re going to beat me to death! If I die, what’s going to happen to our baby?”Her voice was hoarse and desperate. Anyone who didn’t know the truth might have felt a sharp sting in their chest hearing her like that. I, however, knew exactly how vicious she could be. So, I frowned and stared at her coldly, refusing to respond. She seemed lost in her own world anyway, muttering to herself, “Derek, divorce tha

The incident where Derek had a public meltdown in my apartment complex spread online like wildfire. Plenty of people recorded it, and soon enough, he and Bailey became infamous, especially around our neighborhood.Even though there weren’t any security cameras facing the building across from theirs, a car happened to be parked right below Derek’s apartment that day. Its dashcam captured everything, from the moment they leaned out the window smiling to the moment they ruthlessly cut through my safety rope. The moment I heard about it, I immediately contacted the person who posted the video and offered to pay a large sum to buy the footage. However, the uploader turned out to be far more generous than I expected. He clapped my shoulder and said, “Dude, that guy did something no man should ever do. Forget the money, I’m helping you put him behind bars so he gets a proper lesson!”I was overwhelmed with gratitude. Without wasting a second, I gathered all the evidence and rushed it str

She really had no moral compass. Everything she did was calculated perfectly, just enough to drain every last cent I had.“You’re insane! I’ve given you everything I earned. Where the hell am I supposed to find another thirty thousand dollars?”When Bailey saw that I clearly had no intention of giving her money, the fake sweetness on her face instantly vanished. She dropped the act and went right back to that vicious, take-no-prisoners attitude of hers.Hands on her hips, eyes glaring at me, she snapped, “Don’t pretend to be broke! After you fell from that building, the insurance payout alone has to be way more than that! I’ve humbled myself enough to save your face. Don’t push it!”I immediately caught the hidden meaning and demanded, “So you knew I was the one who fell? In that case, do you also know that you and Derek were the ones who cut the rope?”Her expression instantly went pale as she realized she’d slipped up. Her eyes darted around anxiously, panic flickering across he

After Claudia left my place sobbing, Bailey—who had been missing for several days—finally came home. I didn’t need to guess where she’d been. She had definitely spent all that time at the hospital, tending to Derek day and night. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the dirty tricks Claudia pulled had come straight from Bailey’s suggestions. I would never forget the horrifying smile on her face as she cut my safety rope. So, from the moment she walked through the door, I was on guard. This time, though, she came home acting like a completely different person. The woman who used to order me around like I was beneath her was suddenly quiet, soft, and unbelievably obedient.Early in the morning, she stood by the bedroom door wearing a thin camisole nightgown. The moment she saw me wake up, she practically threw herself into my arms and cooed, “Honey, you’re finally awake.”Then, she dragged me into the living room, where she’d scattered rose petals everywhere and lit scented

Sure enough, it didn’t take long before Derek suddenly burst out of the bushes like a terrified rabbit. His face was twisted in pain, with one hand scratching himself all over like crazy, while the other hand was clamped tightly over his crotch. The whole posture was so awkward and pathetic that it was hard to even look at him.The moment I saw him, a wave of satisfaction washed over me. I immediately shouted at the top of my lungs, “Thief! There’s a thief in the neighborhood!”My voice echoed loudly through the quiet night. Within seconds, lights across the complex flicked on one after another. Residents woke up, leaning over their windows to see what was happening. At the same time, the property management and security guards rushed over, grabbing whatever they could find—kitchen knives, forks, tools—that could serve as a makeshift weapon.Derek was completely naked, itching all over, and overwhelmed with panic. His stress spiked so badly that he triggered an asthma attack. He col

Even though it was Derek who had made the mistake, both Claudia and I were nothing more than two unlucky, miserable people caught in the mess.During the month I spent in the hospital, Bailey called and texted me nonstop, but it was only to ask for money. She never once asked why I hadn’t been home for an entire month. The more time I spent around Claudia, however, the more I realized just how rare a woman she was. She was kind and hardworking, always helping me get in and out of my wheelchair, even though supporting a grown man was clearly exhausting, but she never once complained. Whenever the weather was good, she would even suggest taking me out to the courtyard for a walk, even though I never asked her to do that much for me.Derek did not deserve someone like Claudia, and after hesitating many times, I finally decided to show her the photos the private investigator had taken. Shock and fury instantly filled her eyes. After more than a month in the hospital, the doctor said I
