Liam's POV

I stood at the edge of the field and watched Colton walk back to his side like he owned every inch of ground he had ever stepped on.

Tate jogged over and stopped beside me, still catching his breath from the last drill. The drill had been cut short because of Colton's drama. He followed my gaze across the field, took one look at my face, and let out a slow breath.

"Tell me you are not about to do what I think you are about to do," he said.

"I am thinking," I said.

Liam's POV"Deal," I said.Colton's smile came back fast. Too fast. It was the smile of a man who thought he had just gotten exactly what he wanted and was already enjoying the version of events he had written in his head. The team reorganised itself without being asked. Players pulled back to give us room, forming a loose half circle around the space between the hash marks, the way a crowd always arranged itself around something it expected to be worth watching. The squad on the track had stopped pretending to run formations. Everyone was watching now and nobody was hiding it.Tate fell in beside me while I pulled on my gloves."You know you did not have to say yes," he said quietly."I know," I said."He is trying to humiliate you in front of both groups.""Let him try," I said.Tate looked at me for a second and then stepped back without another word. He understood that I knew exactly what I had gotten myself into. Colton was already talking to two of the other receivers, loose an

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   039: The clash

Liam's POVThe field went quiet as I walked. It didn't go quiet all at once. It spread outward from the point where people first noticed me heading in the wrong direction, one player at a time, a ripple moving through both groups until the whole offence had stopped to stare and the squad on the track had also stopped practicing. The only sound left was my footsteps on the grass and the distant noise of the wind moving across the open end of the stadium.I kept my pace steady. I was not rushing, neither was I dragging it out. I had made the decision and I was walking toward executing it and there was nothing left to think about. The time for thinking was gone.Tate called out from behind me. "Harrington."I did not stop.Colton heard the silence before he saw me. He turned when I was about five feet away and I watched him put together what was happening in real time, watched him read the situation and land on a decision about how to handle it. The smile he settled on was the same easy,

Liam's POVI stood at the edge of the field and watched Colton walk back to his side like he owned every inch of ground he had ever stepped on.Tate jogged over and stopped beside me, still catching his breath from the last drill. The drill had been cut short because of Colton's drama. He followed my gaze across the field, took one look at my face, and let out a slow breath."Tell me you are not about to do what I think you are about to do," he said."I am thinking," I said."You are not thinking. You look like a man who already decided something and is just waiting for his legs to catch up."I did not answer him. Down on the track, Avery had already pulled her squad back into formation like nothing had happened. Her voice carried over the noise of both practices, steady and sharp, calling out her counts. Her coach was beside her with her clipboard tucked under her arm. Her back was straight and she had the look of someone who had swallowed something bitter and was absolutely not goin

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   037: Colton's games

Avery's POVTuesday afternoons were shared. The football team took the main field and the squad took the running track that curved around the outside of the stadium, and for ninety minutes we coexisted on opposite sides of a white boundary line without much crossover. It had been that way since my first year, a sensible arrangement that worked because both groups were focused enough on their own sessions that the other barely mattered.Today it mattered.I noticed it in the first ten minutes. I had been doing a warm-up lap with the squad when I caught the energy coming from the main field, and it was different from a normal Tuesday. The coaches were calling the same drills they always called but somehow it was different.I kept running and I counted my laps and I did not let my eyes drift to the field more than was necessary, which was a discipline I had to actively maintain for several reasons. I ran the squad through the warm-up sequence and I kept my eyes on the formation.Jade was

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   036: Done being quiet

Liam's POVJace had a rule about new situations. He had explained it to me before I left for Crestwood. I thought he was clearly joking for the first two minutes but as he continued to talk, I realized he was serious."Keep your head down for the first month," he had said. "Just watch. Learn the room. Figure out who matters and who is just loud. Then you can start making moves."I had been keeping my head down.I had let the film session go. I had walked away from the corridor conversation with Colton and told myself it was the smart play, that Jace was right, that there was nothing to gain from making it a thing before I had established myself properly. Besides, he was the captain and I would stand to lose a lot by challenging him. I had focused on the training sessions and the playbook and getting the offence running the way it should and I had been disciplined about not giving Colton any form of reaction at all. This was now two and a half weeks of keeping my head down. Two and a

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   035: Jade's confrontation

Avery's POVJade had not said much to me since the incident at the library steps. Not about Liam, not about the argument, not about what I had told her. She had come back to me a few days later with an apology that looked real even if it was not complete, and we had found our way back to something that felt like ourselves again. We had been careful with each other since then in the way you were careful with something that had recently broken and we were painfully aware of the cracks. What I had not accounted for was how much attention she was paying to me.Jade had always been observant. That was not new. But there was a difference between her normal attention, the kind that came from loving someone and knowing them well, and the kind she was running now, which was sharper and more deliberate and had a specific subject.I felt it the way you felt someone watching you from across a room without looking up. Small things. The slight pause before she answered when I mentioned the project.
