Avery's POV

I got to the athletics complex at eight forty in the morning and Liam was already coming out after changing into his gear.

He had his kit bag over one shoulder and his hair was a bit damp from the cold. h

He saw me before I saw him, which I knew because when I looked up from my phone he was already watching me with the easy expression that had been on his face since last night in the parked car, the one that did not have to work at being relaxed because it actually was.

Avery's POV"Jade is going to find out," I said suddenly after a few minutes of silence between us. "Yea," Liam said. "She should be expecting it. We are together after all.""She is going to find out and she is going to have another reaction about it.""Is there anything else I should expect from her?"I thought about it. "You remember the tantrum she threw the day Colton sent her the picture of us in the car?""How can I ever forget?" "She thanks to go crazy before she realizes that she has no business going crazy about the situation."Liam was quiet for a second. "But why though? It's not like you're doing anything wrong.""Thirteen years of friendship makes her feel like she owns me," I said.He laughed at that, and I felt it in his chest under my ear and smiled at the ceiling."What if she walked in right now," he said.I turned my face into his shoulder. "She does not have a key to my house.""That is very good to know," he said. "I am glad someone thought about that.""I have

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   220: Make love

Avery's POVMy bedroom was dark except for the light coming in through the curtains from the street outside.Liam had his hands on my waist and I had mine at the front of his shirt. We were standing at the foot of my bed and neither of us was in any hurry. The whole evening was behind us now, the game and the crowd and Zoey and Brianna and all of it, and what was left was just this room and the two of us in it. That was more than enough for right now.I pulled his shirt loose from his waistband and he reached down and pulled it over his head and dropped it on the floor. I looked at him in the low light and thought about the different times I had imagined this exact moment and how thoroughly I had tried to talk myself out of it.He reached for the hem of my kit top. "Can I?"My voice failed me and I just nodded instead. He pulled it over my head and his eyes went over me in the low light with an expression that was open and unhurried and made me feel like someone being seen properly fo

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   219: Come in

Avery's POVWe talked for most of the drive. The decompression kind, the talking that happened when the adrenaline had burned off and what was left was lighter. He told me something he had overheard in the corridor after the game involving two of the defensive linemen and a bet about the food at the post-game spread and I laughed harder than the story probably deserved. I told him about the freshers looking at Brianna on the formation call and he said Keely sounded like exactly the kind of person you needed in your corner and I said yes, she was.He asked me if Brianna had said anything at squad wrap-up and I told him she had left without looking at me. He nodded once and let it go. A few minutes later he told me the offensive coordinator had clocked the Colton situation and was going to raise it with Reyes on Monday. I sat with that for a second. That meant it was already moving without either of us having to push it."What about Zoey?" I said."Not tonight," he said. That was enough

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   218: His defense

Avery's POVHer eyes had gone to our hands. To where Liam's fingers were threaded through mine. She looked at them and the look went on for long enough that none of us could pretend it had not happened. Then she looked up at Liam."Are you two now together?" she asked.Neither of us answered. The corridor was quiet for two full seconds while she stood there and waited for one of us to deny it.She looked between us. "Like actually together. Officially."I felt Liam's hand tighten slightly around mine. Not dramatically. Just present."Zoey," he began."I just need to know," she cut him off, and the careful composed version of her was starting to show cracks now, the practised patience of the apology and the professor speech giving way to something less managed. "I came here tonight to apologise and to ask for help with the project and I had no idea that you two were—" She stopped. She looked at the hands again. "You guys must be kidding me. You're together!??""Now you know," I said.

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   217: Zoey begs

Avery's POVThe squad wrap-up took at least twenty minutes and I got through it and sent everyone home. I then went to stand outside the changing rooms with my kit bag and my phone and waited for Liam. Brianna left without looking at me. I noted it and kept moving. I couldn't honestly care less about whatever it is that was going through her head. Right now, she was a problem I refused to acknowledge. The stadium had quieted down. The crowd was mostly gone and the lights were on their maintenance setting and the grounds staff were doing their rounds and the whole place was settling back into the ordinary version of itself after three hours of being something else. I thought about what Keely had said on the field and I let myself feel good about it for a few minutes before I started checking my phone.Liam came out about fifteen minutes later with his bag and his jacket and his hair still damp from the shower and he saw me against the wall and the look on his face changed into a wide s

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   216: First win

Avery's POVGetting across the field after a home win was like trying to move through water that had decided it did not want to be moved through.Students were everywhere, climbing over each other to get to the players, the noise was enormous and directionless, with everyone celebrating the same thing in a hundred different directions at once. I pushed through with my elbows doing more work than was probably appropriate and looked for number seven. Someone was spraying a water bottle in the air and I got most of it on my shoulder.Tate found me before I found Liam. He was standing with two other offensive linemen still in full kit and he saw me coming and pointed right without me having to ask."Good game," I said to him."Tell him," Tate said, and went back to his conversation.I followed his hand through another stretch of celebrating strangers and found Liam at the edge of the crowd. He had his back to me and I could see from the set of his shoulders that the coordinator was still

Avery's POVHe did not answer straight away.I had asked about Jade like I was asking about a random stranger I didn't know. He was quiet as if there was an elephant in the room for a second or two before he picked it up. I lay still and waited and told myself I was just curious, that it was a natu

Liam's POVI was three blocks from the library and still talking to myself.Who the fuck does she think she is?I kept walking with my hands deep in my pockets and my jaw so tight it ached. I had gone over it three times already and the answer was the same every time. Jade had stood on those steps

Avery's POVFor a moment nobody said anything.Jade stood two steps below us on the library steps with her shopping bag in her hand. I wondered how she knew where we were. Either way, the look on her face was not the quiet, contained version of hurt she had worn all afternoon at practice. This was
