Chapter 97

“Are you saying goodbye because you’re going back to England? Or are you saying goodbye for forever?” he asked with look of concern on his face.

Clara was impressed with Xavier’s perceptiveness. He was the only person to guess everything almost correctly with no real clues.

“I will never see you again,” she said calmly. “I won’t even exist in two weeks.”

Xavier frowned. “Why not?”

“I was only able to live longer for revenge,” she explained. “Now that I have achieved revenge, my extra time will come to an end.”

Xavier didn’t say anything at first. Clara noticed that there were tears forming in his eyes and he looked like he was about to start crying.

“Is there any chance you can change that?” he asked. “It doesn’t seem fair.”

"That’s not how it works,” Clara said gently. “Humans aren’t supposed to live beyond their time. I died four years ago wanting revenge. Now that I’ve got what I wanted, my time is nearly up.”
