I've never loved my fiancé. No matter how much I've tried to bring myself to. I feel nothing. Maybe because I'm just a piece given to him for whatever business my father has gotten into again. Or because I caught him kissing his secretary twice. He said it was only a kiss, nothing more. He loves me instead. Even though nothing in me believed his words, I stayed because I needed to. My father says it's my duty to him for everything he has provided for me. I've always been his little pawn in some bigger picture. A business deal, some contract, whatever is good for business. I'm good for business. I clutch my black purse tighter as I make my way to my fiance's doorstep. Asher O’Neill was a better option than the rest. Tall, blue eyes with a muscular build any woman would drool over. Other than my father's selfish reasons, Asher's looks made it easier to agree to this marriage. I'm sure he's no different than the others, a scum with a dick that never stays in his pants. My heart skips a beat as I stare at the door slightly open. Asher has been gone on a business trip for a month now and we've barely seen each other since his return. The wedding preparations have taken most of my time. Emma's presence is the only thing holding me together. She has me going all out even though she knows how I feel about him. I still have no idea how she managed to convince me to make myself happy by throwing my dream wedding anyway. It would suck so much if I let my father ruin the one thing I can control. Asher had no problem agreeing to everything I wanted for the wedding. He also has no idea I'm at his front door. I can feel my heart racing as I slowly push the door open. “Asher,” I call quietly as I walk into his apartment. A scoff falls off my lips as I stare at the pair of red heels scattered by the couch. Two glasses half-filled with alcohol on the wooden coffee table. Loud moans fill the hallway as I slowly walk to his bedroom. A part of me somehow knew it was always more than just a kiss with him. There's a black bra on the floor next to a dress and a tie and a blue shirt. The one I got him. Fucking asshole. I hear his grunts as I reach the door. It's the same one he makes every time he's inside me and about to have a release. I can't believe I ever let him inside me. God. Asher's butt is in clear view as I stand in the doorway with my jaw open. He has his secretary bent over and gripping the edge of the bed frame. “Fuck you Asher.” His blue eyes pop out as he turns to stare at me. The muscles in his jaw tense. “And your fucking whore.” The red hair scribbles to her feet, pushing Asher away. She doesn't have to gut to stare in my direction as she reaches for the covers. “Olivia, I had no idea you were coming over,” Asher says. I stare at him with disgust as he walks closer to me. “Don't you dare.” I pick up my pace as I walk back to the living room wishing I never came here. The image of them fucking stuck in my head. “Olivia! Olivia, hold up!” He calls behind me, I can hear the struggle in his voice as he rushes to me. I grip the door handle, opening it wide enough for me to step out. His fingers grab the arm of my coat as I try to leave. “Olivia, please hear me out.” “Let go of me!” I yell, yanking my arm from his grip. “She means nothing to me. It's just sex.” I look down at his naked body. He tries to cover his dick with his palms. His face is almost believable as he looks worried. I cough out a laugh. “It's over between us.” The worry in his eyes grows even more as they bulge out. “You can't. Your father won't let you.” “Fuck you and my father. The wedding's over. I never want to see your fucking face again.” It's anger in his eyes now. “Olivia!” he yells as I walk away. I slip into my car, my blood raging with anger as I grip the wheels. I hate myself more as a tear falls down my cheek. My father would be pissed if he were here. He always said tears make you weak. But that was a tear for me and everything I've had to put up with for him. Not again. Not this time. I drive away dialling Emma’s number. She's my best friend and probably my only friend. We've been together ever since I lost my mother. Emma answers the call on the first ring. “Emma.” My voice sounds shaky as I suck in breaths to suppress my anger. “Olivia, what's happening? Where are you?” Emma responds worried. I hit the brakes knowing I'm far away from Asher's apartment and park beside the road for a minute to steady my breath. “Driving. In the middle of some road.” “What's wrong Olivia?” I squeeze my eyes shut. An action I regret almost immediately as the image of Asher's whore bent over his bed frame pops in my head. “He was fucking his secretary. I saw it Emma, and I ended everything. I'm not getting married to that stupid scumbag.” “That son of a b-” I hear some noise in the background as she gruffs loudly into the phone. “Meet me at Nextar Night Bar in twenty. You have to tell me everything,” she says before cutting the call. I look ahead at the road, troubled by how to tell my father I'm no longer moving forward with the marriage. I suck a sharp breath, putting my car in drive. Emma's right. All I need is a few drinks for tonight. And a good fuck if I'm lucky.Chapter 25LeoMy front door rattles with three sharp knocks just after ten o'clock. I'm not expecting anyone, and the late hour sets off immediate alarm bells.Through the peephole, I see Emma standing in a black dress that seems far too deliberate for a casual visit. What does she want this time?I open the door but don't invite her in. "Emma. Why are you here?”"I hope I'm not interrupting." Her smile doesn't reach her eyes. "I was in the neighborhood and thought we should talk. Clear the air after everything that's happened."I stare at her closely for a moment. My head screaming warnings as I really look at her. Her makeup is perfect and her hair styled in loose waves. This doesn’t feel like a coincidence one bit. Emma can’t just happen to be in my neighborhood at ten PM dressed like she's going to a cocktail party. But I need to know what she's playing at, so I step aside and gesture her in. This is my shot at finding the truth."Can I get you something to drink?" I ask, clo
Chapter 24Leonard“I’ll shoot myself in the leg if I have to show up for one more dinner with your father.”Olivia's eyebrows are creased as she gawks at me. It's almost feels like she's trying to find something. “Hey, chill,” I laugh. A failed attempt to ease the situation. “I was only joking yunno.” “Hmm,” she replies with her lips in a pout. Olivia turns her gaze away from me and sits rigid in the passenger seat. An uneasy silence follows next as I navigate through the quiet suburban streets toward her house. I try to circle back in my thoughts to a moment I must have fucked up at the dinner to piss her off but nothing comes up. The dinner at her father's went well enough—except the moment I almost got caught. But Olivia doesn't know about it right? Or does she? Her father might–"Leonard." Her voice cuts through the hum of the engine and my thoughts. "I need to ask you something, and I need you to be honest with me."I keep my eyes on the road, though my grip tightens on t
OliviaI down some red wine just as Leonard slides back into his chair next to me. His fingers rest on mine as he leans into me. My nostrils fill up with his sweet woody scent.“How much longer?” he whispers. I fake a smile to the rest of my father's business associate at the table. “I have no idea but we'll be out of here soon,” I whisper back. Leonard gives me a pursed smile, squeezing my fingers before he lets go. I mouth an apology knowing how much dinners with my father suck. The notification buzz of phone steals my attention. I glance at the screen mentally registering to ignore the call. Leonard’s eyes are fixed on me before slowly moving to his plate. My phone buzzes the second time and make a hushed grumble. I turn to Leonard noting the way his shoulders remain rigid. His jaw works silently as he unfolds his napkin. Something must have happened with my father. Everything always goes wrong with him. "Everything okay?" I ask, reaching for my wine glass instead of the pho
Chapter 22LeonardI stare at my phone as Olivia's name flashes on the screen. Third call today. It takes every ounce of restraint to keep my fingers to myself, letting it go to voicemail. Nick is worried she's a distraction and hasn't stopped reminding me of everything at stake if I fail to do my fucking job. It's been three days since we've met. I know she's getting suspicious about my sudden need for privacy and the distance. Nick isn't wrong. She's a distraction I've entertained too many times that it's addicting now. Like a drug. I want her invading my space with no more secrets. The double life is driving me crazy. But I need this…. the promotion I've waited years for. Nick counts on me too, I can't let him down. Running my hands through my hair, I stare at the wall of evidence I've been constructing. Photos of shipping containers, financial records, names and dates all connected. The O'Neill family tree takes up half the wall, but it's the Murray side….Olivia's family that
Chapter 21 OliviaStanding dangerously close to the hallway, I press my back against the wall and hold my breath. Leonard's voice is clear from here. My curiousity got the better part of me when he got the call. "We have a problem, boss. I've lost Asher."My heart hammers against my ribs. Leonard has someone watching Asher. Why? And what did he mean they had lost him? The conversation continued, but I'd heard enough. I slip back to the living room on silent feet, my mind reeling. I was right to fucking worry. Leonard is keeping something away from me and my guts tell me he's up to no good. Him asking about Asher proves me right even more. Something is happening. And I need to find out what it is. He can't know I'm already suspicious again. Instead, I play along.“Our deal, remember? I need to know where he is.” I act surprised and nod in response. “I have nothing new. I'll let you know if I find anything out.”The room falls silent for a heartbeat. His conversation echoed in my
Chapter 20 LeoMy phone buzzed against the mahogany desk, breaking the silence of my study. Ben's name flashed on the screen. I groaned. It was never a good sign when he called this early in the morning. I'd stationed him to watch Asher weeks ago, knowing that bastard wouldn't give up on Olivia without a fight. I've seen this plot play out too many times. "What do you have for me?" I answered without preamble."Boss, we've got a problem." Ben’s voice carried that edge it always had when delivering bad news. "Emma Stewart met with Asher yesterday evening. Café Place, downtown. They talked for over an hour."My grip tightened on the phone. Emma—Olivia's best friend, the same woman who had tried to seduce me. What kind of games was she playing? "What kind of conversation?""From what I could gather, she's offering to help him get Olivia back. Seems like they struck some sort of deal.”I scoff, standing to my feet as my fingers drum on the edge of the desk. My mornings never end the w
