Chapter 1

Inside the ballroom, a few women in gowns came over with their glasses raised.

"Sarah, Don Matthew treats you so well. I heard he went to three auctions in Milan just to get that ring."

"And remember when you had that fever? He canceled a negotiation with the Colombo family on the spot and had his private doctor come stay with you all night."

"He even transferred that penthouse on Fifth Avenue to you, didn't he? Closed on Valentine's Day. Talk about perfect timing."

I forced a smile. If I hadn't heard what I'd heard, I would have believed I was the luckiest woman in the world.

They chatted for a while and drifted off. I turned and walked back to the sofa.

That was when Matthew came back.

Ruth followed close behind, walking in with him.

Now I could see clearly. His shirt was wrinkled, the collar pulled up just enough to cover the hickeys on his neck.

But his men kept asking in Sicilian about his little escapade.

"Ha! So, Don? How was it with Ruth? Fucking intense, right? You're a madman."

Matthew looked at me, then walked over and sat beside me. He laughed.

"Couldn't get enough."

Then he leaned in and kissed me on the lips, still smiling.

His men burst out laughing. Ruth laughed along too, her eyes glinting with barely concealed triumph. She raised her glass and purred in Sicilian:

"Don, why don't you just marry me? I'm clearly the woman who fits you best."

Matthew didn't look at her. His fingers traced along the back of my neck. He let out a low chuckle.

"Marry you? What do you have to compare to her?"

"My Donna will only ever be Sarah. She's the only one I love."

Ruth's smile faltered for a second, then snapped back into place. She bit the rim of her glass, her eyes cold as they fixed on me over the rim. At Matthew's signal, she slipped away.

I pretended I hadn't understood a word. Lowered my head and sipped my wine.

Matthew's hand slid from my neck to my shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze.

"Sarah, I'm really sorry. We're just used to using Sicilian when we talk business. One of these days, I'll teach you."

I looked up at him and managed a smile.

"Sure."

He kissed my forehead, satisfied.

Then they went back to Sicilian.

"Don, are you really going to keep Ruth as your canary forever?"

"No. She's just a good fuck. My Donna will always be Sarah. Once Sarah and I are married, I'll cut her off completely."

He said it while twirling a strand of my hair between his fingers.

I slowly set my glass down. Got up and went to the restroom.

The moment the door closed behind me, I pulled out my phone and replied to my mentor: [I accept the research position in France.]

The reply popped up on the screen: [Aren't you engaged? Does your fiancé know about this?]

At the word "fiancé," my knuckles went white around the phone.

I typed back: [I don't have a fiancé anymore. He betrayed me. So Professor, please apply for the highest level of security clearance for me and erase all public records of my existence.]

My mentor fell silent. After a long pause, he replied: [I can do that. We leave in seven days. Take care of yourself.]

I stared at those words for a long moment. Then I locked the screen.

The bathroom mirror reflected my face. I pressed a hand to my stomach, and the tears came, streaming down my cheeks.

Sorry, baby.

I'd known Matthew for five years. I'd seen the cold, ruthless look in his eyes when he took down rival families. I'd also seen his lashes lower at three in the morning when he stayed up caring for me when I was sick. I used to believe that the man's brutality and his tenderness were both meant for me.

Turns out I was wrong.

He only wore tenderness as a mask. And I had fallen too deep for the performance.

Seven days. In seven days, I would walk off his stage for good.

Seven months later. On the outskirts of Paris, a medical research center ringed by high walls and electronic fencing.I'd just stepped out of the sterile lab, still in my white coat, when my phone buzzed. A message from my mentor: Core research team meeting at three. An important donor will be present.I replied "Got it," pocketed the phone, and kept sorting through the day's experimental data.At 2:55, I walked into the conference room with my coffee, found a seat in the back corner. The main screen displayed a remote feed—the donor wasn't attending in person. Just video. And then I saw his face.Matthew Gambino. He looked thinner. Cheekbones sharper, eyes hollowed out, his suit hanging loose off his shoulders. But those dark green eyes, sweeping across the screen, were exactly the same as I remembered.Applause filled the room. The director stood at the podium, warmly introducing the "philanthropist"—six months of effort, billions of dollars, nearly half his family's assets, all pour

  • Farewell, My Don   Chapter 7

Matthew's POVAfter taking care of Ruth, Matthew mobilized every resource the Gambino family had to find Sarah. FBI informants. The entire East Coast intelligence network. Federal government contacts. All of it.But nothing turned up.No exit records. No bank statements. Every credit card in her name sat dormant. Her social media accounts hadn't been updated since the engagement night. It was like she'd been wiped from a higher-dimensional system—clean, no trace, no residue."Impossible." Matthew sat in his study, stacks of useless reports spread before him. The bandage was still wrapped around his hand—the cuts from the shattered glass had barely scabbed over. "A living person can't just vanish into thin air."He'd been in that room for two days. Empty coffee cups piled on the desk, refilled and gone cold, not a single sip taken. Outside the window, New York's sky had turned gray three times and black three times. He hadn't drawn the curtains. He hadn't turned on a light. He pressed h

Matthew's POVMatthew stormed into Ruth's apartment. The rain was still coming down.Ruth pulled the door open. When she saw him, a wild flash of joy lit up her eyes. She was still lost in the fantasy of becoming the next Donna. "Matthew, are you here to take me home? I knew you—"Before she could finish, a slap cracked across her face. She slammed into the doorframe, her cheek swelling instantly.Matthew stepped inside, soaked through with rain and cold. He didn't turn on the lights. Just stood in the shadow of the entryway, those green eyes colder than the night outside.Ruth clutched her face, braced herself against the wall, her voice shaking. "Matthew, what the hell are you—""What the fuck gave you the nerve to send her those photos?"Ruth's pupils shrank. But she swallowed her panic fast. "What are you talking about? I didn't do anything. Did Sarah misunderstand something—""Misunderstand?" Matthew pulled the plastic bag from his pocket and threw it at her feet. The screen glowe

  • Farewell, My Don   Chapter 5

Matthew's POVAfter Ruth's prenatal checkup, Matthew ran into Sarah's cousin, Barbara. She'd just flown in from London and hadn't told Sarah yet."Congratulations. Heard you two got engaged." Barbara smiled and handed him a glass. "My sister takes relationships seriously. Always has."Matthew nodded, returned a polite smile."But she's got one flaw." Barbara took a sip, casual. "She hates lies. Hates betrayal. Cross that line, and she'll walk out on you."Matthew's smile froze for a split second. He raised his glass and said nothing.Barbara seemed to remember something, set her glass down. "I've been meaning to ask—where are you from? Your accent sounds familiar."Matthew threw out the name of a small Sicilian town.Barbara's eyes lit up. She slapped the table. "No way! My sister and I grew up there."She pulled out her phone, scrolled to an old faded photo, and handed it over. Two little girls squatting in front of a stone house. The family crest on the gate in the background—Matthew

I was taken to a private hospital in the city. When I woke up again, it was the next morning. The doctor stood at the foot of the bed, clipboard in hand. She looked at me, kept her voice flat."I'm sorry, ma'am. The baby didn't make it."I placed my hand over my stomach. Nothing there anymore.I lowered my head. Tears blurred everything in front of me.Baby. Mommy's sorry.Tears hit the blanket.I looked up at the doctor. "Please don't let anyone know about this. Act like this child never existed."The doctor didn't ask questions. She just nodded.Matthew didn't show up until noon. He pushed the door open and walked in, still wearing yesterday's wrinkled shirt. He sat down by the bed. First thing out of his mouth:"Why didn't you answer your phone? Why'd you go to a hospital so far away? Took me forever to find you."I didn't say anything."Didn't I tell you not to wander off?"I looked at him. No expression on my face."Phone died. My fault."He paused, like my answer caught him off g

The next morning, Matthew packed his things and said to me:"Sarah, get ready. We're heading out this afternoon.""Where to?""Out of town. Need to check a shipment. Thought I'd take you along for some fresh air."His voice was soft, gentle. I said okay. That afternoon, Matthew came to pick me up. He was driving himself. The passenger seat was empty. I opened the door, sat down, and buckled up.Through the rearview mirror, I saw Ruth's car following behind us, two car lengths back."Who's that?" I asked."Ruth. She brokered the deal on that shipment. She needs to be there.""Mm."The car left the city and wound up the mountain road. The trees grew thicker on both sides. The air outside the window shifted from the city's haze to the damp cool of the woods. Matthew kept one hand on the wheel, the other reaching over to squeeze my fingers before pulling back.At a clearing halfway up the mountain, Matthew parked. He said he needed to go into the woods to inspect the goods and told me to l
