Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
I immediately burst into tears when I heard his familiar voice.

I cried and told him about what had happened to me recently. However, he interrupted me impatiently.

“Eleanor, why are you telling me all this?”

He sneered and said, “Your mother died. Your father is as good as dead. Your company has filed for bankruptcy!

“Have you ever considered that maybe this is your own fault?

“Maybe you’re a jinx! You’ve cursed them!”

I could not speak at all through my sobs.

However, Oliver continued, “Look at you now!

“I can’t even stand your disgusting face. Let’s break up.

“You bring bad luck to your own family! I’m afraid that I might end up dead if I continue to date you.”

After that, he hung up and blocked my number and accounts.

I felt a little helpless. I intuitively felt that something was wrong, however, I did not know what it actually was.

It was not until I video-called Bella that something dawned on me.

Her face, usually covered in pimple scars, appeared smooth.

She covered her mouth shyly. “Eleanor, what did you do to yourself?

“Look at me! A woman has to know how to take care of herself.”

As she spoke, I noticed someone walking behind her.

It was her parents who were supposed to be bedridden at the hospital. I stared at them as I asked anxiously, “Have your parents been discharged from the hospital?”

Bella looked furious. She said indignantly, “Eleanor, what’s that supposed to mean?

“Are you hoping for them to die in the hospital instead?

“Why are you so cruel? It’s no wonder your mother’s dead and your father’s paralyzed! Serves you right!”

Her harsh words stung me. Before I could react, she hung up.

I felt frozen. I felt stiff and awkward as I put my phone away.

I crossed the road in a daze and got hit by a car.

The two of them quickly announced their engagement after my death. Bella even flaunted her wealth on social media.

“Eleanor? Let’s pay and go!

“Aren’t you done yet?”

I heard Oliver’s voice. It was only then that I realized I was still stuffing food into my mouth.

Both of them stared at me in confusion. “If you’re still hungry, maybe we can order more for you.”

I smiled awkwardly and wiped my mouth. “That’s alright. I’m full.”

After we paid for the meal, Bella wanted to go home. Oliver looked at me hesitantly.

“How about I drop you off at your company first before dropping your best friend home?”

He deliberately emphasized that Bella was my best friend. He knew that I would definitely let him drop Bella home first.

I nodded. “You should head home after you drop Bella home.

“I’m going to the office to handle a few things. I already called the driver while we were eating.”

When he heard that, Oliver grabbed my hand reluctantly. He leaned in to give me a peck. “Alright. I was hoping we could have dinner together tonight.”

He looked reluctant to leave me, but the flicker of triumph in his eyes did not escape me.

“Let’s go on a date in a few days when I’m finally free.”

Just then, my ride arrived, and I got into the car.

“Bella, I’m heading out.

“Oliver’ll drop you home. Don’t worry.”

The moment the car window rolled shut, Bella grabbed Oliver’s hand intimately.

The driver passed me an unopened box of a polaroid camera. “Ms. Smith, I got the thing you wanted.”

I looked at the two identical polaroid cameras and smiled.

“Let’s go to the zoo.”

I wanted to walk around and use the camera Bella had given me.

I was flustered as I rushed to comfort her. “Are you alright?”However, the hatred in her eyes made me pause. After a long while, she caught her breath and snapped, “Oliver is a piece of trash! Eleanor, where’s the camera I gave you?”I stared at her in surprise. “It’s at home.“Why? What’s wrong?”She took a deep breath. “You should head home and destroy that camera.“Remember, you have to destroy it completely!” After that, she hailed a cab. “I need to head home now.“I’ll call you later.” When I saw her leaving, I felt relaxed. [Alright, you can stop texting me now.]After I texted fake Oliver, I pulled the drawer open. The polaroid camera that Bella gave me was inside. As for the texts that she had seen earlier, I had fabricated them. I knew Bella too well. She was stupid and vain. I looked forward to the moment when she and Oliver would turn on each other. I looked at the camera in my hand and let the memories wash over me. Apparently, if I destroyed thi

The fiasco finally ended when Bella paid the man fifty thousand dollars. The crowd had dispersed. Things had finally calmed down a little when Bella’s mother started to eat bugs. Bella stomped her foot in anger. “Mom, what are you doing?!”Her mother had lost her sanity. She could not even recognize her own daughter. She stared at Bella with blank eyes and drooled. “I’m hungry. I want to eat!” Bella teared up. “Mom!” The funeral ended hastily. After all, Bella was taking care of her mother on her own while she took care of the funeral arrangements. She was overwhelmed. After the funeral ended, Bella finally decided to send her mother to a mental hospital. A day before admitting her, Bella took her mother for a full-body check-up.The doctor told her that everything was normal. There was nothing wrong with her. Despite the results, we could all tell that something was seriously wrong with Bella’s mother. After she sent her mother to the mental hospital, Bella wanted

I did not return to the office. Instead, I went home. I quickly fell asleep on my bed. I was mentally drained. I was afraid of making the wrong move that would send me back to hell. Thankfully, everything was still under my control. I did not expect Oliver to call me and woke me up.“Eleanor, quick, come over!“Bella’s mother has gone insane!” Then, he sent me a video. It was interesting, to say the least. Bella’s mother knelt on the ground and ate a sparrow. The crowd was terrified as they ran away. However, I noticed Bella standing in the corner and gulping excitedly. When I reached there, the police were already at the scene. They quickly brought the situation under their control. Bella’s mother was curled up on the ground. She was not responding to anyone. She did not allow anyone to touch her, not even Bella. A few sparrow feathers were spilling out of her mouth, and her mouth and hands were covered in blood. She murmured incoherently. She should ha

My heart sank at the news. Even though I had anticipated a day like this, it still felt unreal to hear about it.“Alright.” Before I left, I put on a thick layer of foundation and added dark eye shadow to make myself look sick. I wanted to sell the act.I was happy with what I saw in the mirror. It was already late when I reached the hospital. Bella tried to stand up when she saw me. But she huffed and puffed and could not do it. She stopped trying and looked a little embarrassed.“Eleanor, you’re finally here!” She started crying. I felt immensely satisfied as I looked at her huge frame. When I walked over to her, I smelled something bad.The smell came from the woman lying next to her father’s feet. Bella’s mother had gained a lot of weight. Her mouth hung agape. The horrible smell was coming from her mouth. Bella looked a little embarrassed when she saw me trying to cover my nose. “Eleanor, where are your parents?” To continue with the act, I pretended to

She could not control her emotions. Her hair looked a little frazzled. “Bella, what’s wrong with you?“Why is it that I can only take a photo of my family with the camera and nothing else?”Bella seemed a little anxious when she realized that she had lost control of her emotions. She immediately said, “No! No, that’s not what I meant.”I stared intently at her, as if I could read her mind. She licked her lips and apologized to me. “Eleanor, you can, of course, take photos of whatever you want with the camera I gave you!“But I really wanted you to take a photo with your family using that camera.“The films are quite expensive. I know you’re rich and able to afford them, but I hoped you’d use these particular films for you and your parents.”I looked at her. I could see that her forehead was beaded with a thin layer of sweat because she was very nervous. She was trembling uncontrollably, too. Finally, I agreed to her request. It was only then that she seemed to relax.

I spent the next week at work and refused to meet Oliver. He was happy about it, as he kept meeting up with Bella. Then, Bella posted something on social media. Even though she deleted it immediately, I still managed to see it.[Help! What should I do if my family starts growing fur?]She had even attached a photo of her parents. I felt like it was time to visit the hospital again. It was 10 a.m. when I reached, and the hospital was just starting to get busy.I had informed Bella that I was coming to visit that morning, so she was waiting for me at the entrance. “Hi, Eleanor, showing up empty-handed?” She stared at me in annoyance. I smiled awkwardly. “I did prepare something, but I forgot it in the office. I’ll bring it over on my next visit.” She looked pleased after that. I followed her into the hospital ward. It was only then that I noticed the two people on the hospital beds. They looked very different. Her father was very skinny and resembled a monkey. He
