JULIUS’S POV

I froze. “A note?”

She nodded, still crying. “Yes. It had your handwriting and your scent. I swear, Julius, I thought you wanted this.”

My mind went blank for a moment. Then it hit me like a punch to the gut. Someone had set us up. Someone wanted Angela and my mother to catch us together.

But who would do something like that? And why tonight, of all nights?

As Kimberly sat there sobbing quietly, I could only stare at the floor, my hands clenched into fists. Whoever did this, whoever destroyed everything between Angela and me, was going to regret it.

I threw on the first shirt I could grab, barely buttoning it as I ran out of the room. My heart was pounding in my chest, not just from panic but from sheer desperation. I couldn’t let her walk away like that, not again. Not like this.

I sprinted down the hallway, ignoring the curious stares from a few servants I passed. The moment I reached the end of the corridor, I heard faint music and laughter echoing from the party hall.

Angela’s POV“Not today,” he said finally, his voice rough. “You will rest. You will heal. You will eat everything Elara puts in front of you. And when she tells me you can stand on your feet without swaying, when your mind is clear and your strength is back, then I will take you to her myself. You will ask your questions. And I will be the wall between you and her venom. Do you understand?”It was a compromise, forged in the fires of his fear and my resolve. It was permission, and it was a plan.“Yes,” I whispered. The tension drained from me, leaving only exhaustion and a fragile, burgeoning peace. He pulled me closer, his forehead resting against mine. “We face our ghosts together,” he murmured. “But we do it on our terms. When you’re ready.”I nestled back against him, and the hard knot of unresolved terror in my chest began, for the first time, to loosen. The war outside was coming. But first, there was a quieter, more personal reckoning to be had. For the first time since the fe

ANGELA’S POVAaron’s heartbeat was steady against my ear, marking the slow minutes. The pain in my head had settled into a dull ache, softened by the warmth of him. But I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Kimberly’s smile in the crowd, not the crazed sneer from the room, but that polite, empty smile she wore just before everything shattered. The bond between us hummed with his quiet, strategic fury. I could feel it churning beneath the calm he was holding onto for my sake. Plans forming, contingencies weighed, threats sorted and ranked. It was a cold and efficient fire, and I was its hearth.“You’re thinking too loud,” I murmured into his sweater. His chest moved with a sound that wasn’t quite a laugh. “Impossible. My thoughts are very quiet and orderly.”“Liar.” I tilted my head back carefully to look at him. His gaze was fixed on the far wall, seeing maps instead of plaster, patrol routes and weak points. The green of his eyes had cooled from a fractured emerald to

ANGELA’S POVMom gasped, clutching my hand. “Sweetheart, what is it? Is the pain worse?”I shook my head. Tears leaked from the corners of my eyes, hot and silent. “She was supposed to be gone,” I whispered. My voice was raw with a grief I thought I’d buried. “I changed everything. But she… she’s still here.”Rainey’s face contorted with fury. “She won’t be for long. Aaron has her. He’ll make sure she never hurts anyone again.”But that was the other half of it, the chilling truth I could barely hold in my hands. Last time, I’d died alone on a rooftop. This time, I’d woken up in a soft bed, with my family around me and the fierce, protective pulse of my mate’s bond thrumming in my chest.I hadn’t just changed my fate. I’d armed myself.Kimberly might have been an unchanging constant, a venomous thread in the tapestry. But I was no longer the same fabric. I was stronger now. Protected. Loved. This time, she wasn’t just facing a lonely, betrayed woman. She was facing a King. The thought

Angela’s POV"I need to see him," I said. I tried to push myself up on my elbows. The room swooped dangerously around me."Absolutely not," Elara said, her voice firm. She pressed a gentle hand to my shoulder. "You are on strict bed rest for the next twenty-four hours. Any sudden movement could make things worse." Her expression softened. "He will be in the second your body is stable enough to handle his energy, Luna. I promise you that. Right now, his anger would be a storm in this room, and your mind needs calm."She was right. I could feel the storm in him through the bond, even muted. I sank back against the pillows. The fight drained out of me, replaced by a weary, aching kind of fear.Kimberly was here. The past wasn’t just a memory. It was in the dungeon below, and it had just declared war on my present. And my father was down there with it.The quiet of the room became a vacuum. It was broken only by Mom’s soft sniffles and the sound of Rainey’s restless shuffling. And into th

ANGELA’S POVI was swimming up through something thick and black, like oil on water. There was no gentle drifting. It was just nothing, and then it was everything. A crushing, throbbing pain right at the base of my skull, and a low, persistent ache everywhere else. The light hit first. It was harsh and blurry. I winced, squeezing my eyes shut tight."Angela? Sweetheart?" It was Mom’s voice, close by. It was trembling with a fear I’d never heard in her before.I forced my eyes open, blinking against the blur. Her face slowly came into focus, leaning over me. She looked terrible. Her mascara was smudged into dark, tired circles under her red-rimmed eyes. Rainey hovered beside her, pale and fierce, her usual brightness completely washed out by worry."You’re awake," Mom breathed. Her hand came to my cheek, her touch so light. "Oh, thank God.""Wha…" My voice was a dry crackle, barely a whisper. My throat felt packed with sand. "What happened?"The last clear memory was the festival. The

  • Fate Or Mates   0151:Ex Friend From Hell

AARON’S POVAll conversation died when I entered. The power that usually made men bow now seemed to only amplify the dread in the room. I was the Alpha King, and I had failed to keep their daughter safe in my own house.“David, Ma’am” I began. My voice was rougher than I intended. “Angela is stable. Elara, our head healer, is with her. She has a severe concussion, but there is no critical damage. She is unconscious, but the bond means she is holding on.”Her mother let out a choked sob and collapsed into a chair. “What happened? She just went to fix her dress.”“A coward’s attack,” I said. The words felt like ground glass. “From behind. In a secluded courtyard.”“Who?” David’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble. The businessman was gone, replaced by a wolf father whose pup had been threatened.I met his gaze. “A woman named Kimberly.”The reaction was instantaneous, but not what I expected. David’s face did not contort with rage. It drained of color, his knuckles whitening around the g
