Carson

“Dig up everything you can on that bastard of an uncle. He’s hiding something,” I said, voice low and tight. Grant gave a grim nod.

“What makes you so sure?” he asked.

“Because if he had nothing to hide, he wouldn’t have reacted the way he did last night.” I started pacing, heat rising under my skin just thinking about it.

“When I approached Graham, I laid it out—told him we understood his situation, that handing Lisa over to us meant she’d be safe. He didn’t even flinch. He let you take her without hesitation.”

“But Michael…” I stopped, grinding my teeth. “Michael was different.”

Grant watched me carefully. I could see the pieces starting to come together for him too.

“He seemed ready to pay the tribute. I assumed, since Natalie isn’t his biological daughter, I’d be doing him a favour—freeing him of a burden. Told him I’d claim her. Said she’d be protected, that all she had to do was relinquish her father’s estate and inheritance. I even said I’d take care of her and her mothe

  • Fated In Darkness   176 Ash and Accusation

AdrianDimitri and Lancly didn’t leave when I expected them to. Instead, Dimitri stayed, humoring Alison as she chattered on, trying to uncover anything they might have in common. She was clearly taken with him. It wasn’t hard to see why. He had that cold charm, detached, but just attentive enough to keep someone like her leaning in.And for once, he didn’t push her away.I watched her laugh at something he said, her eyes shining, unaware of the game she’d stepped into.Eventually, it was time to leave. My body was heavier than usual, my thoughts fraying at the edges. I needed rest. But I hadn’t even stood up before the club exploded into chaos.Screams. Shattering glass. A pulse of dark energy that hit like a wave.I didn’t need anyone to tell me.Strigoi.They’d attacked.I was on my feet in seconds. The air was already thick with panic, the scent of blood and fear rising around us.I turned to Dimitri and Lancly without hesitation. “Take them to my office,” I ordered. “They’ll be s

  • Fated In Darkness   175 The Dragomir Revelation

Adrian“What is it?” I asked, already bracing for something I wouldn’t like.Dimitri leaned forward, his voice low and even.“Dragomir is alive. And he’s building an army.”I went still.“That’s why I leveled Ashberge Manor,” he continued. “The place was crawling with freshly turned Strigoi, humans twisted through deception. Lukeman was complicit. He knew.”I shifted in my seat, my mind racing, trying to connect this to what the Dhampir sentries and Abbot had warned me about days ago. It fit, too well.“Trickery?” I asked, my voice tight.“They’re harvesting Strigoi venom,” he said. “Refining it. Injecting it into humans, without consent. No rites. No preparation. Just pure venom and transformation. Some family heads are already siding with Dragomir because he’s promising them a new era, one without tributes.”He paused. “And of course, he doesn’t need tributes. He’s not honoring the accords. He’s taking people.”The weight of it sank in, slow and sickening. My father would understand

  • Fated In Darkness   174 When Monsters Make Promises

AdrianThe moment Dimitri entered, I felt Natalie shift beside me. Uncomfortable. Guarded. I didn’t blame her. After everything that had happened, seeing him now, here, was bound to twist the knife.“Natalie,” Dimitri said, offering her that practiced, charming smile he wore like a mask. I kept my silence, though every instinct screamed to tell him to back off. He wouldn’t push it, he knew better. But still… I watched him closely.“Dimitri,” Natalie replied smoothly, returning the smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. That’s when Alison gasped, her attention snapping to him like a moth to fire.“Wait, is he the friend you were talking about?” she asked, her voice practically bubbling.I blinked, suddenly remembering the offhand comment I’d made to her about introducing her to Dimitri. Before I could answer, she leaned forward, eyeing him like a runway model. “He’s hot.”If only she knew.Dimitri looked mildly confused at first, then glanced her way. True to form, he remained c

  • Fated In Darkness   173 Nocturne's Teeth

NatalieI returned to my mother’s room, hoping, just hoping, that I could speak to her before sleep claimed her. But she was already out, exactly as Margaret had said she would be. Peaceful. Still. I watched her for a while, listening to the soft rhythm of her breathing, memorizing the face I feared might never look the same again. Then I left, the ache in my chest tightening with every step back to Adrian’s room.He came in a few minutes later, his shoulders heavy with fatigue. There was a stiffness in his movements that told me he hadn’t stopped thinking about this either.I told him what his mother had said, about the venom, the transition, the impossible situation we were walking into, and he didn’t argue. He didn’t offer excuses or explanations. He just stood there, silent, like someone who already knew and had been breaking under the weight of that knowledge.“We’ll get through it,” he said finally, voice low but sure. “Together. I promise. And if she stays here, my father will h

  • Fated In Darkness   172 A Truth Worse Than Death

Natalie“I haven’t been this hungry, or eaten this much, since I got sick,” my mother said, settling back against her pillows, her voice touched with surprise and a flicker of joy.“That’s because,” Lady Margaret said softly, stepping forward, “you no longer have cancer.”My mother’s head snapped toward her. “Wait, what?”“You don’t have cancer anymore,” Margaret repeated, the words landing with quiet finality. My mother stared, blinking as if trying to decipher a language she no longer understood. “You mean… the treatments? The ones Michael was paying for? They actually worked?”The silence that followed said more than any answer could.I felt the weight of it settle around us like a storm about to break. We wouldn’t be able to delay this much longer. The truth, the real truth, was clawing its way to the surface.Lady Margaret, ever composed, stepped back with a warm smile that didn’t quite hide the caution behind her eyes.“We’ll discuss that soon. For now, you need to rest. You may

  • Fated In Darkness   171 The Taste of Becoming

NatalieMy mother sat upright in the hospital bed, talking easily with the doctor, too easily. Her cheeks held colour, her eyes sparkled with a vitality that didn’t belong to someone who had been slipping away just a day ago. She looked radiant. Whole. Alive. No one would believe she'd been dying. But I knew better. This wasn't recovery. This was transformation. My stomach twisted. Was this what Professor Alester meant? Had her body adapted to the venom... or surrendered to it? A miracle on the surface, maybe. But underneath? Something ancient had taken root.I lingered in the doorway, steadying my breath, trying to silence the storm of questions rising in me. For now, she was alive. Warm. Present. I would not let fear ruin what might be the last moment we truly had together.I stepped inside. The doctor glanced at me, then gave a courteous nod before slipping out silently, as if he too feared the stillness might break.“You’re awake,” I said softly. Her face lit up at the sight of me,
