CHAPTER FIVE

Charlotte.

There was something about this strange man that seemed particularly intruiging, but also absolutely unsettling... like, terrifying might be the better word, but I could not deny the allure he had, and I wondered why it was working on me. It had not even been a week since I broke up with my long time boyfriend, Lucas, and to be fair, I was not yet able to say whether or not I was over it... I mean it made me sad, but I was not particularly heartbroken... I suppose the reason for the break up in the first place was still my primary preoccupation.

"You play?" I asked in response to him saying "let's play".

"Would I be saying let's play if I didn't know how to?"

I rolled my eyes. "What's with all the sassy men these days..."

He chuckled and licked his lips in a very... elaborate way? A way that reminded me of hungry predators in the wild that I saw on nature documentaries. This, oddly enough, was not off-putting to me... just an interesting observation.

I was the one with the white pieces so I was to play first. I made my first move with my Knight, jumping over the pieces in front of it- what I considered to be a very proactive start. He played, something simple... a pawn in the middle. I brought out my other night and he sighed.

"Why did I assume you would be good at this?"

I was baffled. "What?"

"Chess. You looked like some kind of savant and this is your opener?"

"What are you on about? What's wrong with my opening?"

"It's just..." He looked up at me and shook his head. "Don't fret about it." He said and lifted his hand to make a move but I slapped it away.

"No, I fret." I said, mockingly with regards to his choice of words. "Speak."

"Opening with the Two Knights Defense is just... primitive, you know?

"Primitive? Wait, that's what this is called?"

"The Two Knights Defense? You didn't know the opening you were using?"

"It's just a game, why would these moves have names?"

"Oh. I severely overestimated your abilities, I'm afraid."

"Now you're just insulting me." I said and knocked some pieces over irritably and made to stand but he grabbed my hand in an iron grip that frighteningly appeared effortless.

I stopped to stare at his face, expecting an apology or explanation, but instead, he said:

"It was not my intention to."

"Well that makes it all the more better doesn't it?"

"Please, sit." He said softly but firmly. "I will be more gracious with my words... and we have something very serious to discuss."

He was baiting me just to avoid saying 'I'm sorry'? And I was taking the bait?

"And what might that be?" I stuck my nose in the air and feigned disinterest.

"Sit." He commanded.

Every fiber of my being wanted to 'defy' his order and walk off because who did he really think he was to be telling me what to do? But I found myself obeying, sitting quietly, while trying to make sure my face said I was only curious, not intimidated or impressed or anything. He better not get the wrong idea. He sat down and slowly began to rearrange the pieces that I had scattered angrily.

"So?" I did not want to wait. "What important things do we have to discuss?"

"Well..." He seemed so preoccupied with such a mundane task as putting wooden carvings in their respective square boxes on their flat board. "You can start by telling me why you want to kill yourself."

"Oh my God, that again?"

He nodded while still looking at the board. "I mean I know it's not because of that guy from the bowling alley. Boyfriend? Ex-boyfriend?"

I suspected he was one of those people that needed everything to be perfectly, circumspectly arranged, otherwise it would bother them, because at this point, all he was doing was shifting some pieces to be exactly in the center of their squares.

"First of all, it's rude to eavesdrop. Secondly, what's it to you? Why do you care?"

"Why do I care... like about why you were thinking of killing yourself or why do I care who he is to you?"

"Both."

Finally, he looked up, and I could tell he was about to say something really important.

"Because I want to marry you."

I threw my head back and laughed. It was the most genuine laugh I'd had in what felt like forever.

"What? Is this some new way of hitting on girls?"

"I'm too old for that." He said.

"Dude, you're like twenty five. Twenty seven tops."

"Twenty eight. And you?"

"Isn't it rude to ask a woman her age?"

"No, I don't think it is."

"Ugh. I'm twenty five."

"That's what I thought."

"You just looked at me and guessed my age?" I said with an eyebrow arched.

"Pretty much." He said, shrugging, which ironically was the most normal I had seen him do. Everything about him was strange- the way he behaved, the way he spoke, his choice of words and where to lay emphasis on within his sentences, even his actual physical features seemed... out of the ordinary.

"And you are going to marry me."

"Precisely. And I am in fact here to propose marriage to you."

"What the hell? You HAVE been stalking me!"

"No, iI simply knew you'll be here."

"How?"

"The same way you expected to see me. Intuition."

"No that's..." I sighed and shrugged."Whatever. I'm not going to marry you, or anyone at all really, not like it matters if you know that."

"Wait, here me out."

I chuckled and folded my hands. "Go ahead." I said, genuinely curious to hear whatever he thought he could say that would convince me to marry him after two borderline creepy meetings.

"I have an obscene amount of riches. I need a wife for the next two years."

Why did him saying "I need a wife" sound similar to someone trying to make a purchase or place an order?

"I... I don't understand."

  • Fated To Kill My Mate   ELEVEN

CHAPTER ELEVEN Noah.I sighed in disappointment as she ran out of the room, but I didn't chase after her. I was too irritated. Today had been an irritating day for me.Green came in shortly after, looking curious, but smart enough to not ask me a question that would further aggravate my brewing anger. He simply stood by while I held the unsigned contract in my hand, my eyes scanning the text for anything wrong or off-putting but I could find nothing out of the ordinary. She stood to gain much more than she would potentially lose, so what was the matter? She was still in the building, I could sense her presence strongly, and I wondered what she was doing just standing around."Green?" I called and Green walked to where I sat."What's wrong with it?" I slid the document to the edge of the table he stood at."Nothing in particular, sir.""Then why didn't she accept?""Er... I believe the reason to be the price.""The price?""I don't think she's ever seen that kind of money, sir. It wou

CHAPTER TEN Charlotte."Whew, sorry about that." Noah said and planted himself on his seat again, as if something extraordinarily crazy did not just unfold right before me.I was still sitting on my seat, but I was as far as I could be from him while being perched on the edge of the chair in fight or flight (really just flight mode)."What was that about?" The guy's words echoed in my mind. You'd better get as far away from him as possible, while you still can."Just some prick.""No, Noah, that wasn't 'just some prick', and you and I both know it.""It's too much to unpack, my dear, and we're here on a date. It'll sour the mood."I was starting to speak but Green came in, looking a bit cautious; I presumed the bald man had warned him to proceed carefully based on the events that had just transpired.Noah turned his head sharply and nodded when he saw who it was."Right on time." He stretched out a hand to collect a document from him."Sir," Green held on and Noah turned to look at h

CHAPTER NINE CharlotteI spent the rest of the ride with crossed arms and pouted lips while Noah simply relaxed into his seat and crossed one leg over the other until we finally got to some sophisticated looking part of town that I was not sure I knew existed prior to this. The car pulled up outside a building designed like a cottage, but you could just tell that it was cottage-like in looks and looks alone, nothing more than the architect's artistic choice. There was a large windmill outside it which clearly served only aesthetic purposes. I sat still, arms folded, half expecting Noah to get the door for me and half expecting him to drag me out of his own door, but he too remained in his relaxed state. The driver finally came around and it was Noah's door that he held open while offering a hand of assistance that Noah did not take. I stared, a little flabbergasted as he shut the door behind his boss and came to get my door, offering the same hand that Noah rejected. I grunted "I'm f

CHAPTER EIGHT Noah.It was impulsive, but it was happening. I was taking Charlotte out for lunch, and I had no idea where to go because I had not planned this. The reason was because I needed to rope her into the marriage contract fully as soon as possible, and for that to happen, I needed to stop her from going back to her home in Romulus territory where I couldn't reach her without stirring up trouble."Where are we going?" Charlotte asked timidly. I wonder whether it was the brief display of violence from earlier that had quelled her fieriness, but she had seemed somewhat scared since she got into the car."To a restaurant.""Which one?" She asked, seeming to gain confidence with every passing second."Green?" I called for my assistant who sat at the edge of his seat facing the window- a show to make us forget he was there."Sir?""Call for another car. I would like to travel privately with Charlotte.""Of course."Charlotte's eyebrows furrowed into a deep frown. "What-" She looke

  • Fated To Kill My Mate   SEVEN

CHAPTER SEVEN Charlotte.I really said I was going to marry this weird stranger. I was going to die soon anyway, what did I have to lose by embarking on one last great adventure? To be fair, this would actually be my first great adventure as I had spent most of my life just trying to survive, trying to build a future it turns out I was not even going to be a part of. Ha!"One year. I can't give you two years, I can give you one." I told him, being at least halfway honest with that. His eyes seem to light up but the rest of his face was as blank and bland as ever."So, you're going to marry me?" He asked, his voice alternating between nonchalance and excitement in a not so graceful manner."Do I have to spell it out for you?" I turned and started walking again without him, and for some seconds, I didn't hear his footsteps, so I figured he wasn't following me, but just like he did before, he was suddenly beside me."To which address do I send the paperwork?" He asked."Oh you really

CHAPTER SIX Noah.Well, I did not intend to let her know right off the bat that I wanted to put a ring on her, but the words had slipped out already, and I was not a man who would retract or take back what he said, so I stuck to my guns."I have an obscene amount of money." I said, hoping to appeal to her fleshly, materialistic desires, but for some reason, I did not think this would work, even if she knew it was true. "I need a wife for the next two years." I said, getting it out of the way."I don't understand" was her very fair and reasonable response, although I expected more laughter.I cleared my throat and straightened my back. "It's a... business proposal kind of thing." I said."Wait," her eyes gleamed with excitement, "like one of those contract marriages thingys?" She laughed."Uh... I suppose so."More laughter. "No way. That happens in real life?" She put her hand over her mouth to laugh some more, hiding her beautiful smile. "Is this like a regular thing?""I wouldn't k
