Settling back into a routine was the next step for me. I threw myself into my writing, focused on my articles and did anything to keep my mind occupied.

Overthinking had become my worst enemy, and I knew dwelling on things I couldn’t control—like Chandler’s disappearance—would only drive me mad. So, I channeled my energy into my work, hoping that, as an outpatient, I could talk to Dr. Nelson during my checkups.

Maybe he could take me to Chandler’s house so I could see what was going on for myself. But I couldn’t get Dr. Nelson’s phone number when I was discharged.

My stupid ex started trying to worm his way back into my life, bombarding me with texts and apologies.

“I miss you, Lex. I've been carried away for a while, but there's nothing out there for me. Let's get married and pick up where we left off.”

Brad was an entitled prick. Maybe two or three months ago, I would have jumped at having him back. But now?

Never.

I wasn’t the pushover I used to be. The first heartbreak had

VanessaMorning crawled in slowly, dragging the weight of my thoughts behind it. I didn’t want to think about anything. I wanted my mind free from worries. So I resumed my morning duty, dusting and folding.Somewhere below, a grunt echoed through the air. Then a laugh followed by the clatter of bodies hitting sand. The sounds came in intervals. My curiosity edged forward.I set the cloth aside and walked to the nearest window. The courtyard was alive. Three males sparred shirtless under the rising sun, blades in hand and adrenaline thick in the air. But only one of them made my breath catch like a snare.Alec.His back was turned at first. Muscles stretched across his shoulders in perfect lines, moving with precision. Each step was calculated and graceful. His laugh rang out as he ducked under Lucas’s blade and struck clean across his side.He turned, and I swallowed.Tribal markings sprawled across his torso, half-faded in places, carved into flesh. My heart betrayed me with a thud.

Alec Vanessa's scent curled into my lungs like a slow-acting drug. That damned scent. I wanted to tear my skin off just to stop feeling it.Everything in me burned. My wolf was pressing harder than ever, raging and clawing beneath the surface. One second more and he’d take over.Vanessa had no idea what I was holding back. If she did, she would’ve run.Instead, she held her ground like she wanted to die pretty.I narrowed my gaze. “You will show me respect.”Nothing.“I’m not one of those foolish nobles who chase skirts in the shadows. I am Alpha. My word and will is law.”Still nothing. Not even a flicker of fear.“Do you even know who you’re speaking to?”“Loud and clear,” she said, unbothered. “The almighty Alpha who follows his cock more than his crown.”I took a step forward. Her back touched the tree.“I should punish you for that.”Her mouth twitched, amused. “But you won’t.”I leaned in, enough to brush her cheek with the heat of my breath. “Keep talking like that and I’ll ma

VanessaI didn’t go upstairs. Nina said I was assigned there, but nobody else had told me anything. The head maid hadn’t, and until someone made it official, I was going to mind my business.Besides, I wasn’t ready to be near him again.I needed somewhere quiet, somewhere people rarely went. So I slipped into the kennels. They were built near the east garden, tucked behind the laundry building. I didn’t know whose dogs they were, but they were so beautiful. Sleek coats, clearly imported breeds. They looked hungry, and I couldn't ignore them. One nuzzled my arm as I poured food into a bowl.“You’re so beautiful,” I whispered, rubbing the ears of a small brown pup.I moved slowly, cleaning out the cages, wiping down metal bars, changing water bowls. There were maybe twenty pups, and a few adult dogs. The sun was already high, but this was the first time all morning I felt something close to peace. Then I heard two boys arguing somewhere nearby.“I told you the third verse is about the b

VanessaI sat in front of the broken mirror, brushing through my hair like it was a mission. Each stroke was precise. I wasn’t going to give Maya the satisfaction of finding fault again, not over something as ridiculous as hair. The stupid comments from yesterday still rang in my head. Smelling like a mutt? Filthy hair in her food? Tch. If she wanted to see how wild I could get, she should try touching me again. But I wasn’t going to let it get that far.I parted my hair down the center and began twisting the ends inward, tucking the length into itself, pinning and styling it low against my neck in a way that made it look shorter and almost forgettable. If I had a few flowers, I’d stick them in and call it a crown just to spite her.Cut it? Goddess forbid. I’d rather rip the sheets off her precious Luna bed.I stared at my reflection. The cracks in the mirror blurred the image, but I could still make out the final look. Clean. Simple. Not the wild beast look Maya accused me of. Let he

AlecVanessa rushed off down the corridor. Her maddening scent still lingered. Lucas was pissed.“What the hell are you doing?” he barked, marching over. His glare was sharp, but I didn't care. “Relax. It’s my house.”“Your house?” Lucas laughed bitterly. “You were kissing her out there like no one could walk by and see. Do you know what would have happened if anyone else had seen you? Maya's room is down the fucking hallway.”“I couldn’t help it,” I said flatly. “If you’ve got a problem, go argue with the moon goddess.”I didn’t wait for his reply. I turned and started walking toward the wine bar. My body was hot, my wolf kept prowling beneath my skin like it hadn’t calmed since the last time she touched me.Lucas followed me, fuming. “Alec, this won’t end well. You know that, right? People loved your father. He was respected. And you're screwing the daughter of the man who killed him.”I stopped walking and glanced at him with a smirk. “My father wasn’t the saint everyone paints him

AlecMaya's scream cracked through the hall like glass shattering. At first, I ignored it. Maya screamed often over dresses, food, and maids. I had learned not to respond. But then I heard something else.Begging.My chest tightened. I stood frozen, listening. A low whimper. Another hit. The sound of something being dragged.Vanessa.My wolf roared beneath my skin, pacing, agitated. I clenched my fists. My steps were fast, nearly thunderous, across the corridor. I reached the door, ready to kick it down, but I stopped.Breathe. Think. She’s still a servant.I couldn’t go storming in like she was mine.I opened the door. And there she was. On her knees. Hands raised in defense.Maya stood above her with a fistful of hair and

Vanessa The silence between us stretched too long. I remained curled on the couch, covered in Nina’s blanket, but the heat from Alec’s presence had already replaced any comfort it offered. I didn’t look at him. I didn’t have the strength. His voice broke through the quiet. “What did you take?”I stayed still. My lips pressed together. He stepped closer. “That was a deliberate attempt to poison yourself.”I blinked up at the ceiling. If I opened my mouth, I might say too much. The truth was bitter on my tongue. But my thoughts betrayed me. Why would Olga give me something that made me bleed? And then the answer sat in my chest like a stone.Because if it worked, the bond would decay without ritual. No breaking ceremony. No madness. Just slow death. He sat on the arm of the couch. His eyes scanned my face. “Are the servants getting enough to eat?”I scoffed quietly. “What do you care?”His jaw twitched. I turned to him, glaring at him.“We used to run this land. We bled for it. Now we’

A sharp crack of footsteps snapped us out of it.I tore away from his mouth, breathing hard, lips swollen and wet with everything we shouldn’t have done. The light of a torch spilled onto the edge of the garden path.Shit.I ran.I didn’t even look at him. I turned and bolted in the opposite direction. I ducked through a side gate, cut across the yard, and didn’t stop until I slammed the door to the servant quarters behind me.I stood in the dark. My hands trembled. My body still throbbed where he’d touched me.What had I done?Shame wrapped around me like cold fingers. My wolf pulsed in my chest, wild and needy and angry with me for leaving him.I staggered into my bedroom and locked the door. On the table, still untouched, sat the small, corked bottle Olga had left me. The liquid inside was black. I’d asked her for something to help with the pull. Just something to numb the damn bond.My fingers shook as I uncorked it.I took only a mouthful. The right dose. Enough to dull the sense

VanessaMy wolf whimpered, then took off.Her lungs pumped like we were chasing something and running from it all at once. My paws barely touched the ground. The garden blurred into streaks of silver and green. The pull of the bond was a drug. And I was losing my grip.Alec’s wolf was closing the gap too quickly. My heart skipped. My legs moved faster, but I knew he would catch me.And he did.His weight slammed into my side, tackling me hard to the ground. We tumbled across the grass, a blur of black and grey fur, until we hit a slope near the edge of the clearing.I tried to wriggle out from beneath him. He didn’t let me.His heavier wolf towered over mine. He pressed his weight down, growling deep in his throat.I snapped at him, twisting to bare my fangs, but he didn’t budge. His mouth brushed my shoulder. It wasn't a bite. It was a command to shift.I growled back, stubborn and furious.I wasn’t going to give in.His command echoed again, stronger this time. And my wolf cracked.
