The Montana Alpha stood at the border gate like a man who thought he owned the ground beneath it.

He was built like a barn door, gray at the temples, with a jaw that had never once been told no. Behind him, forty wolves in human skin shifted restlessly, muttering, their eyes sliding toward the royal guards lining the wall. The air smelled of sweat and old grudges.

Bryce walked through the gate alone.

He didn't hurry. He let the silence stretch until the muttering behind Montana died completely, and only then did he stop, close enough to see the vein ticking in the older man's temple.

"Montana."

"Your Majesty." The bow was stiff and brief. "I'm told my daughter crossed your border. I've come to take her home."

"Your daughter."

"Lillo. Eighteen years old and sharp as a splinter." Montana's mouth thinned. "She's been a headache since the day she could walk."

Bryce folded his arms. Somewhere deep in his chest, his wolf lifted its head and listened. "Why did she leave in the first place?"

"The girl likes trouble. Always has." Montana waved a hand, as if brushing off a fly. "She needs to come home and prepare for her wedding."

The morning went very still.

"Wedding," Bryce said.

"Her marriage. It's all arranged."

"Marriage to whom?"

"Damien Domenico." Montana said the name with relish, the way a man mentions a very expensive car. "She turned eighteen and still hasn't found a mate. So it's my duty as her father to see her married to a wealthy, respected man, and Damien is exactly that."

Bryce's voice came out low and level, which was far more dangerous than a growl. "She isn't going back. Not to a marriage she was forced into."

"That is between me and my daughter." Montana lifted his chin. "The arrangements have already been made."

"Then unmake them. Don't you have another daughter? A niece? A cousin?" Bryce stepped closer. "I don't care who. Send someone else to stand in her place."

Montana actually laughed, short and ugly. "Give any of my blood to that man? Never. I wouldn't do that to a dog." He spread his hands. "But Lillo? She's a perfect match for him."

On the wall, a guard drew a slow breath through his teeth.

Bryce didn't move. "You wouldn't give any other girl to him," he said softly, "but she's fine."

"She's useful. They are more alike and suited to each other."

That was the word that did it. Something ancient and furious stirred in Bryce's chest, and the air around him seemed to tighten like a drawn bow.

"Lillo is not going anywhere," he said. "She's my mate."

The silence that followed was total.

Montana's face went slack, then gray. Behind him, a ripple of whispers ran through the forty wolves like wind through dry grass. The king's mate. The runaway. Her?

"That's impossible," Montana breathed. "That girl couldn't possibly..."

"The moon disagrees."

Montana's eyes darted from Bryce's face to the guards, to the gate, to the ridge beyond it, where a thin smear of smoke still stained the morning sky. He wet his lips. When he spoke again, the swagger had crept back in, but it was thinner now, like a coat worn over a fever.

"With respect, my king, that girl is trouble. I don't think you can contain her. She'll cause trouble in your palace, I promise you that. The best option, the kindest option, is to let me take her back home."

Bryce looked at him for a long moment.

"I don't think you understand what I'm saying here, Montana." Every word fell like a stone into a well. "Lillo is not going to live with you. She is my mate."

Montana shifted his weight. "Then, well. There are ways, aren't there? You could break the bond or something. Sever it. It's been done."

A muscle jumped in Bryce's jaw.

"Do you think she would survive breaking the bond?"

Montana said nothing.

"And why would I do that?" Bryce's voice dropped lower still. "Why would I break the bond? Give me one reason."

"Because she's trouble, Your Majesty." Montana tried to sound reasonable and landed somewhere near desperate. "And you can't afford to have her. A king can't afford that kind of chaos in his house."

The temperature at the gate seemed to drop ten degrees. Several of the Montana wolves took an involuntary step back. On the wall, the royal guards straightened, hands drifting to their weapons.

"Are you saying," Bryce said, very quietly, "that I cannot handle my own mate, Montana?"

Montana went white. "No. No, Your Majesty, I'm sorry. That is not what I meant." The words tumbled out fast now. "I'm only saying she can't be contained. She's a rebel. She always has been. She doesn't follow rules, she doesn't follow orders, she doesn't..." He stopped, swallowed, and glanced at the ridge one more time. "She's a rebel, that's all."

Bryce noticed the glance. He noticed everything. He filed it away carefully, the way a hunter files away a track in the mud, and kept his face perfectly still.

"Here is what is going to happen," he said. "You are going to turn around. You are going to take your forty wolves and walk them off my border. And you are going to tell Damien Domenico that the wedding is canceled."

"Majesty, the arrangements—"

"Are canceled." Bryce didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. "If I find one Montana wolf on my side of that line again, I will not send a polite message first."

For a long moment, nobody breathed.

Then Montana bowed, lower this time, and so stiffly that it looked like it hurt. He turned and snapped his fingers, and the pack fell in behind him, a slow gray tide receding down the road. Only once, at the bend, did Montana look back. It wasn't at Bryce. It was at the palace on the hill.

Bryce stood at the gate until the last wolf was gone.

Then, without turning around, he said, "You can come down now, Lillo."

High above him, on the east balcony where the wind carried every word up the hill, a girl in a borrowed sweater went very, very still.

Lillo woke to sunlight across the pillows and a body that ached in places she hadn't known could ache.Bryce sat at the edge of the bed with his back to her, his elbows on his knees and his head low."Bryce?"He turned, and the sadness on his face stopped her from saying anything else. She tried to sit up and gasped. Her back burned, and every muscle protested. She reached behind her and felt long raised lines across her skin. When she looked down, she saw a deep mark just above her belly button, and when she touched her neck, she found another one there."I'm sorry," Bryce said."For what? What happened?""You don't remember?"Lillo frowned and searched her mind, but nothing came. "I remember leaving the gathering. I wasn't feeling okay. You carried me, and after that..." She shook her head. "There's nothing. What happened?"Bryce was quiet for a moment. "We made love," he said at last. "I couldn't control my wolf, and I hurt you.""Bryce...""I tried to stop him. I couldn't." His vo

The torches along the ridge had burned low when the sound of heavy pawsteps drew every head toward the path.A white wolf walked into the circle, tall and perfectly white, with silver eyes that caught the torchlight. The pack stepped back to let her through, and murmurs rose from every direction."A white wolf.""I've never seen one.""She's beautiful."Lillo glanced at the wolf once and turned back to Bryce. "Who is that?""Celeste," Bryce said. "The partner my mother chose.""Is she always late?""Apparently."The white wolf crossed the stone and stopped in front of them. A servant rushed forward with a white gown, and she shifted back into a young woman with long dark hair. Celeste took the gown and held her head high."Does my wolf not impress you?" she asked Lillo."Your wolf is nice," Lillo said."Nice?""Good coat. Well fed."Celeste's lips tightened, and she turned to Bryce with a smile. "Alpha King, forgive my late arrival. Isn't this the right moment to claim me as your Luna

Lillo locked the bedroom door that morning and told the guards no one was to come in, not even the king.Bryce tried anyway. He knocked twice."Lillo, open the door.""I'm fine.""You're not fine. I can hear you.""It's the new moon, Bryce. It will pass.""Let me help you.""You can't." Her voice cracked. "Please. I don't want you to see this."Something heavy hit the floor inside the room, and a long groan followed that ended in a roar. Bryce took hold of the doorknob, then let go, because she had asked him to."I'm not leaving," he said."Bryce...""I'll be right here."He sat on the floor of the hallway with his back against the door and stayed there while the sounds went on. They rose and fell for hours. Twice he stood to break the door down, and twice he made himself sit back down. The nanny brought Lilly by in the afternoon, and when she asked where her almost-mommy was, he told her Lillo wasn't feeling well and needed to rest."Is she sick?""She's working something out.""Can

The boutique was called Maison Lune, and it looked like the kind of place that charged you for breathing.Silver chandeliers hung over racks of silk and velvet in colors Lillo had only ever seen on butterflies. A tiny woman with pins in her mouth swept toward them the moment the door chimed, took one look at Lillo's borrowed white shirt, and went very pale."Your Majesty," she breathed, curtseying so deeply her knees cracked. "Is this the lady?""The lady needs a wardrobe," Bryce said. "Everything. By tonight.""By tonight? Majesty, a gown takes weeks—""Then show me what takes hours."The woman looked at him, looked at Lillo, and visibly decided not to ask questions. She snapped her fingers, and four assistants appeared out of nowhere like wolves answering a howl. What followed was the longest hour of Lillo's life. She was measured, draped, pinned, and turned in circles while strangers argued over her shoulders and the exact shade of her skin. She was handed a green dress and refused

The palace still smelled faintly of wet ash the next morning, which Lillo felt was fair. The old cook had spent the night scrubbing his stove, and he glared at her over a tray of breakfast eggs with the cold dignity of a man attending a funeral. She ate every bite. A truce, she decided, was easier than starving.Afterward came the shower, in a marble bathroom bigger than her father's entire kitchen, with water that was actually hot and pressure that could strip paint. She stayed under it far longer than was polite, letting the last of the forest, the soot, and the sprinkler water swirl down the drain. It was only when she stepped out, wrapped in a towel, that she noticed the problem. Her clothes were gone. The maid had taken her sweater "for laundering" the night before and had not returned it, and her denim jacket was presumably already ashes in some furnace. The room she'd woken in on the first day was Bryce's, he had made a point of mentioning, though he had graciously been sleepin

Bryce had said exactly one thing when Lillo came down from the balcony: "Eat. Rest. We'll talk tomorrow."Then he'd vanished into a war room with his council, leaving her alone in a palace full of silent staff and a very long list of things she didn't trust. The food was at the top of the list.Lillo had grown up learning that a stranger's kindness always came with a leash, and a meal cooked by a stranger's people in a stranger's kitchen was a leash with gravy on it. But by mid-afternoon her stomach was winning the argument. So she slipped down the back stairs, found the kitchen empty between meal services, and made a decision. If she was going to eat in the Alpha King's house, she would eat something she had made herself."Noodles," she told the empty kitchen, hauling a copper pot onto the stove. "How hard can noodles be?""Almost-mommy!"A small whirlwind in a tutu skidded around the corner, one sock missing, a doll tucked under her arm like a football. Somewhere down the hall, a na
