Chapter 4 : Wolfless... No More

“What…” I stepped back, fazed. “D.. did I heard it wrong?”

‘You tell me.’

My eyes widened even more. Was it my wolf? Holy— I have a wolf! It just spoke to me and I was sure it wasn’t one of my intrusive thought! Its voice was different, and I could feel its existence inside me. It was there!

“W-wha… How are you here? Why… Where have you been?” I had a lot of questions that I couldn’t think properly. “W-what is your name?”

‘Alice.’

“Alice…” I mentioned her name, still flabbergasted. “When did you came from?” I was still gasping, shock at the very good news. “I-I was waiting for you.”

‘I know.’

“Were you hiding?” I couldn’t help but look at the parts of my body as I spoke. I was both fascinated and astonished. It was my first time having a conversation with my wolf, after thinking my whole life I didn’t have any! “Oh my god. Alice…”

‘Enough with the questions. I have a news for you’

I tilted my head. “News? What news? Is it good? Bad?”

‘The rejection might have worked.’

I breathed in, and nodded. “Okay. What do we do now?”

‘You do know that rejecting your date doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be alone forever, right?’

Of course. After rejection, I heard another one will come to you. But I didn’t think about that earlier since I had no wolf—

“Wait. Is it what I’m thinking?” I asked, excited. “Oh my!”

‘There’s another one. He’s not here though.’

“You could smile him from miles away?!” I asked. “Is that even possible?”

Though I wasn’t seeing Alice, I felt like she rolled her eyes after I asked that.

‘There was a limit to it, but yes. And please, do not speak aloud. You look stupid.’

She even had an attitude!

Giggling, I nodded. A smile was carved on my lips before I even knew it. I was beyond happy. At long last, Alice finally appeared! I wasn’t wolfless anymore. I could shift now!

Perhaps now that I have Alice, the pack would allow me to join them in our pack run. I could finally get to ran with them! I could… now communicate with other wolves on my age. This would definitely change the course of my life, right?

‘So, tell me. Where is he exactly? Our new wolf?’

‘Avalynn, I said the rejection MIGHT have worked. Right now, I could smell the two of them. But considering the other one was far away that his aura was almost faint, I was guessing he was the new one.’

It was awesome.

‘So, you have like a radar? I stopped sensing Adler’s smell as soon as he vanished from my sight. But you can sense him in this distance?’

‘If you’d shift, you would, too.’

I licked my lower lip. I haven’t tried shifting. Alice had just arrived so I could only get to transmute starting today. But holy sheez, just thinking about showing it off excite me! I felt worked up!

‘I’d tell Jade about this!’

I felt Alice smirked. I took that as a response and ran to leave. I was smiling as I advanced. What happened earlier was bad, but Alice showing up made up for it! I felt confident! Now, after a decade and seven, I felt like I finally belonged to the pack. My title as the pack’s outcast would be junked now that I have a wolf!

That being said, I hurriedly went back to the house where Jade said we’d meet to eat dinner. It was still early and it hadn’t been that long since I left, but it was where my feet brought me. I was overjoyed that all I could think about was how I could explain what magic it was that happened.

“Jade!” I yelled her name as soon as I entered the house. “I’m home!”

I was never energetic. Nor was I the person who was enthusiast. But today was surely different than all the days I’ve had before. This day was an historical day.

“You’re back?” She yelled back.

Judging from where her voice was coming, she was at the kicthen. I followed my instinct, and appeared in front of her like a fucking kid who just got home after her teacher gave her enough stars to be proud of. Jade looked back at me curious and perplexed.

I smiled at her, with my hands clasped together on my abdomen. I couldn’t contain it.

“Alice appeared today.”

Those were the words I came up with. It was vague, but it was what came out when I tried to tell her the best part. Alice was the highlight of this day. Forget about Adler. Forget about the rejection. Alice mattered the most to me.

At least, at this moment it was.

“Alice? Who’s Alice?” Her brows furrowed, before she returned her gaze to the strove to turn it off. She removed her kitchen gloves afterwards. “Aren’t you suppose to meet your mate? Who is it? It can’t be a girl, so let’s skip Alice and jump to who your destined mate is.”

“Silly!” I chortled. It didn’t sound me, but it was the least of my concern. “Alice, my wolf!”

“Your wolf?” She tilted her head. “Your wolf— Wait. Fuck. You have a wolf?!”

“Damn, yes!”

Jade’s eyes widened in surprise. She stepped forward, closed the gap, and pulled me into a hug. Her other hand tapped my back repeatedly as if she couldn’t believe what she just heard.

“You have a wolf now…” She repeated. “At long last!”

“Finally, Jade.” I said, expressing my sigh of relief. “Finally.”

“So, now we have more reason to celebrate.” Jade pulled out from a hug. She was smiling wide. “And guess what? Your brother will join us.”

“Gunner?” My brows creased. “He’ll die before that happens.”

“For real!” Jade propped her other hand to the kitchen top. “I talked to him before you left. He just got out to buy a cake.”

My heart sank.

“My brother agreed?”

Gunner hated me. I was sure he hated me to death that I could die and he still wouldn’t care. What changed? Or was it their mate bond? Did Gunner feel compelled to join since Jade was her mate?

‘Are you being choosy right now, Avalynn? Take what you can get and smile,’ Alice said.

I shook my head. “Making him agree to it is a mystery, but I guess I can’t be choosy.”

My eyes went to what she was doing before I came. On the kitchen top were a lot of ingredients. There were also platic bags— groceries. On the stove was one caserole and one frying pan. Had I not came, she would have probably end up doing all of these alone.

It made feel overwhelmed.

“Why are you preparing a lot when it’s just us and Gunner?” I asked before I walked towards the cabinet beside the kicthen utensils. I opened it to get a pair of kitchen gloves.

“Because it’s your birthday.” She replied, and opened the stove. “By the way, about your mate, did you meet him?”

Oh.

Adler strictly told me not to tell anybody. But Jade wasn’t just anybody, and she wouldn’t rat me out so it should be okay, right?

“It was Adler.”

“Was? What the hell happened? Did he bully you? Did he—” Jade stopped, before she turned to me. “Fucking cunt. Adler? Adler Salvatore?”

I chuckled. I literally had the same reaction when I realized it earlier. “The dick, yes.”

“I’m guessing he asked you to reject him like the worthless piece of junk he is.” Jade rolled her eyes. “But it’s gonna be the best choice. Living alone is better than living with him.”

I guess the reason why Jade and I were friends because we were alike. We hated Adler, and his fanatic friends. We didn’t look up to them, whilst the others were worshipping them. We had the same energy, likes, and dislikes, that I felt like she was my soulmate.

If soulmates were real, that was.

“He did ask me to reject him, and I did. I have no idea if it worked though.” I picked up the potatoes to wash it. “Alice told me she wasn’t sure, but she sensed another presence of my mate.”

“You’re not supposed to sense them the same day. It takes time.” Now, Jade was all curious and confused. “I know one who undergone the same thing. She met her mate after a year.”

“A year? So how did Alice sensed another right after the rejection?”

My forehead crumpled. I turned to Jade who was then already looking at me. Our eyes locked, and for a brief moment we were thinking hard. Until she smiled.

“How about we find him?”
