A smile curved in my lips. Though I definitely had no idea why Alice sensed another presence of what seemed to be my new mate, when we still didn’t know if the rejection worked, I felt thrilled.
I wanted to indulge myself in it. The excitement and all these weird series of unexpectedness had to lead me to something. I had been living my life in hues of black and white. Now that Alice came, and there was a huge possibility that I’d soon meet love, I feel enthusiastic.
I felt like this day would significantly brought a big change to my life. Which I would love to venture.
‘You should accept, Avalynn.’ Alice said.
“Tomorrow, then?” I brought my eyes to what I was doing to continue, but I was pre-occupied. I was fired up!
‘How does your radar works, Alice? Can you see what he looks like?” I asked, excited.
The Moon Goddess first linked me to Adler, which was, as much as I hate to admit it, strong and good looking. I was hoping the new one would be more… handsome.
‘What am I, a crystal ball?’
Jade smirked. She tilted her head. “Before that, let’s tell your brother. He’s coming.”
The muscles of my face went rigid after hearing my brother’s name. For a while I had forgotten about him. Now, what am I going to do with Gunner? We haven’t spoken to each other for ages. I wasn’t sure how I could face him. Though we see each other every day, we never interacted. Not once since our mother died.
I moved my hand to slice the potatoes. Gunner did come shortly after I was done with two. It was awkward. But he helped us. The first minutes it was only Jade and him who was making interactions, but as time passed, Jade kind of like, gave us a time alone.
I wasn’t ready for it. But so was Gunner.
“Happy birthday…” Gunner greeted me in a tone I couldn’t tell if cold or monotone. “Jade told me I should greet you.”
At least he was bold enough to make that clear. “Thank you…”
“Let’s pretend this isn’t a forced interaction.” Gunner straight away said as if we’d lose the momentum if he’d think more of what to respond. He was honest. But I didn’t know if I would like it better. “What happened? I heard you went in the woods.”
‘You are so stiff.’ Alice commented.
I breathed hard. “You probably won’t believe me.”
“Go on…” He insisted. He stopped chopping, and put down the knife. He threw me his attention to listen, and it felt… off.
Am I really just about to open up to Gunner about my mate after he befriended my bully to see me suffer? Grudges aside. I knew Gunner wasn’t one to listen to stories like these.
“Adler is my mate.” I slowly moved to see him. “The future Alpha of the pack, yes.”
“Adler?” A knot formed in between his brows. He looked perplexed. “Adler Salvatore?”
I nodded my head, my forehead relaxing. “For real.”
“Adler…” He repeated. “Are you serious?”
Gunner threw me a confused look, as if he was convinced it was a bluff. My shoulders slumped down as I shook my head.
“I sure am hoping I’m not. But here’s what, we both rejected the bond. Alice, my wolf, came, and she said I have another mate,” I said, summarizing what happened. I couldn’t tell it in details.
“I’m not sure I could take all that at once.” His lips pursed as he stared at me more attentively. “Tell me everything. Why is Adler your mate when you’re wolfless?”
“I just said I have a wolf.” I turned to him with a bland expression. “I went in the woods just as Jade instructed me to do so. I saw Adler there. I’m guessing he followed my smell.”
“No, shit.” His brows furrowed. “If what you told me is in order, that means you were still wolfless when you found out Adler’s your mate.”
‘He’s quick.’ Alice said. ‘But let me make it clear. I just didn’t appear. I had been inside you the whole time.’
‘What?’ I stood straight. ‘You’re there and fucking watching the entire time the whole pack hated me for being wolfless?’
I was seeking for an answer. But just as I badly wanted to hear her response, Alice fell silent. Great.
“I heard my wolf’s voice after I rejected Adler. I’m guessing that’s the trigger.” My brows sloped inward. “But a trigger to what?”
“Ask your wolf.” Gunner raised a brow.
I rolled my eyes. “I wish she would cooperate.”
“You found yourself a good counterpart,” he said, probably a joke. I didn’t know. I haven’t talked to him much to tell. “Tell me what happened next. You said your wolf appeared and she told you she sensed your replacement mate.”
“That’s all there is to it, Gunner. I don’t know him. Alice could sense him, but I have no idea who he is nor where he is from.” I bit my lip. “We’ll meet him tomorrow, though.”
“We?”
“Me and Jade.”
Gunner’s eyes narrowed at me. “She’s not coming.”
I shook my head. “You should talk to her about that. She’s the one with the idea.”
I liked that she suggested it. Though I would probably eventually come up with it, I wouldn’t have to power to push through it. Which was why I felt stimulated when she asked me to.
I wanted to know him. I hoped he’d be far different to Adler. I yearned to see him. And so, the next morning, I woke up early. I made breakfast for Gunner and I, before I took a bath. Jade and I met at nine. We went to a salon before we shopped. Jade had the ends of my hair curly, before she picked set of clothes for me. She even bought make up. Said it was needed to caught my unknown mate’s attention.
It was tiring but fun. Comparing my definition of dolling up to hers, Jade’s was surely more better. Before I knew it, I looked like a different Avalynn. One that Jade called the hoe Ava.
“Ugh.” Jade groaned, looking down at her ringing cellphone. “Your brother is calling again.”
I turned to her. “Didn’t you settle it with him yesterday?”
“He told me not to come. I said I won’t to trick him but he found out after you left the house.”
“Answer his call. I’ll wait here.” I let out an assuring smile. Gunner would definitely hate me more if she wouldn’t. “At least tell him where you are, and that you are still safe.”
She nodded and held my arm before she looked around. “Okay. Wait for me here. Alright?”
“Not even a step.” I nodded.
The sky was turning dark blue. After we sent what we bought back home, I asked Alice to help me locate my mate. It led us near the boundary of our territory. And I could quite smell him. It was only faint though.
My gaze went on my body to scan what I was wearing. The skirt was short. The heels were high. The combination surely weren’t my style, but it wasn’t that bad. Jade always wear these types of clothes, and she looked incredibly hot in them.
‘Oh…’ Alice reacted.
I looked up. The vanilla and cedar wood smell grew stronger, and we both sensed it. My mate was near, wasn’t he?
I turned to the front. A few more steps and I’ll be leaving our pack’s territory. It’ll be the town of Hanseelvan. The territory of the Easter Passover’s Pack.
My brows furrowed. Does that mean he’s from the Easter’s pack?
I moved an inch, and turned to the opposite side. But as seconds passed, the smell I sensed turn into a presence. With that, I could both smell and feel him.
But there was something different. The sensation. The aura of his presence. It was odd...
‘He’s not one of us.’
Thank you for supporting this story! xoxo
My head turned to each direction. I understood what Alice said, but I couldn’t exactly pinpoint what he was. If he wasn’t a werewolf, then what? The smell was something I was a little familiar with, but I couldn’t remember how and why. Have we met before? His smell was extremely pleasant, and I understood that it was because he was my new mate. But the sensation of his presence was both familiar and strange to me. Where is he? His smell is strong but I still can’t tell where exactly he is! ‘Turn to your back. He’s near but still out of your reach.’ I heard Alice said. I turned to my back as Alice instructed. I stepped forward, and attentively scanned the area. It was already dark, and it was full of trees so I couldn’t tell. I couldn’t see even his shadow. It thrilled and scared me… if that was even possible. The thought that he didn’t smell like a wolf was scary to me— but knowing that he was my mate thrilled me. I wanted to meet him. That was the exact reason I allowed Jade to dr
“Is there something wrong?” Conrad asked. Each passing second, Adler’s scent was growing stronger. I couldn’t pinpoint which direction he was, but I could tell he was heading here. At full speed, at that. I didn’t know if he knew I was here, but if I could smell him, that’d mean he could smell me, too. Why could I still sense him? I have rejected him. It was supposed to work. Rejection would work if both parties wanted it. We did want it to happen. We didn’t like each other, so what went wrong? “Avalynn?” Conrad mentioned my name with concern, it was only then I got into my senses. Turning my head back at him, I forced a smile. “I… I’m sorry. I just remembered something.” Adler and Conrad shouldn’t meet each other. Not here. Adler shouldn’t know Conrad existed. The Alpha’s son shouldn’t know I have two mates, and that the other one was a Lycan. It would definitely cause a problem and that’d be the least thing that I’d want. I just met Alice. I haven’t redeemed myself. I haven’t
My brows formed a knot as I looked at Jade. She sounded a little frustrated. But since it was also what I was supposed to do before she called for me, I nodded my head and closed my eyes. Communicating with my wolf, Alice, I turned. My nails first grew longer, and then my fingers bigger. My size started to double, and I could feel it. I opened my eyes to look at myself amidst my turning. I was getting bigger. My skin were stretching, and although I was expecting it to hurt, it didn’t. It felt like I was naturally transforming, and it was foreign to me. In a fraction of seconds, I was standing in four legs. In front of me was the Alpha, who was in the same height as me. Now, we could see eye-to-eye. “White fur…” I heard Jade said. “You’re indeed a daughter of Analisse.” My mom was one of the strongest wolves in her prime. She was one of Adler’s father’s trusted wolves. Her fur was white, with a green eyes. Only mine was blue because I got it from my father. She was known as the whit
ADLER’S POV I rested the back of my head on the head rest of the chair. Clad in only a black robe, I swirled the wine in the glass. My hair was still dripping wet. After I’d gone home and return to my human form, I took a bath to clean myself. I was reeking. Almost as if I smell like her. Avalynn Hewlett, that bitch… Who did she meet in the Border? I was with Rake and Owen when I sensed her. But Asmodeous was too aggressive. He shifted without my command and went straight to her like a fucking dog. My jaw clenched. ‘You can do better than that, Asmodeous.’ ‘She is OUR mate, Adler.’ Asmdoeous retorted. ‘Whether you like it or not, Avalynn is our destined mate!’ ‘Not if the rejection will work.’ My face darkened. ‘Aren’t you wondering why the rejection didn’t work the first time?’ Asmodeous asked. ‘Knock it off.’ ‘You knew why, Adler. You knew damn well why it did not work.’ My jaw clamped hard. No matter what the reason is, I want it to work this time. I cannot fail my fathe
AVALYNN’S POV “Analisse?!” I froze on my spot. It was my mother’s name they called just now. But the fact that I realized why they mistook me for her gave me a comforting type of sadness. It made me want to cry in joy. Because at least… I have something that would remind them of my late mother. I guess my mother was the only one in this pack whose fur was white, given that my mother was the first they thought of the second they saw my appearance. Wolves who were joining the pack run walked close to me. Behind them was our pack leader, Abadon Salvatore. He had the same eye color as Adler. Same fur. Except he was bigger, and more intimidating. There were almost fourteen of them here. All were elders. “Jade…” Jade’s father spoke in our mind-link, his eyes reflecting confusion. “Is this…” “Avalynn, father.” Jade replied in a respectful manner, lowering down her head. “Avalynn Hewlett, Mrs. Analisse Hewlett’s daughter.” “It can’t be!” I heard the other say. “Analisse’s daughter is w
Jade was the one who chose the dress. The heels. The accessories. I gave her the power to do so as I trusted her fashion sense, and taste. But looking at myself now— I think Jade went a little overboard. I was hoping it was just me, though. The dress and heels matched. They looked pleasing together, but I didn’t think this sexy glamorous look was what I wanted to look like facing the Alpha. I mean, I thought we agreed I’d look formal and respectable. But instead, I looked like I was going to a… semi-formal party. Jade did my hair and make-up into a clean look. My hair was tied in a bun. I was wearing a silk baby blue dress below the knee, paired with a silver heels. I knew I wasn’t any better with fashion. But how was this formal? ‘You look pretty, Avalynn. You saw how you look before you left..’ Alice commented. ‘Besides, you’re also going to meet the Luna of the pack. You should impress her, too if you really want to be accepted.’ I wasn’t sure about the Luna of the pack. The Alp
The same way we were supposed to meet our mate when we reached seventeen, there was also an age requirement for us to be able to shift and communiate with our wolves. Though it was never definite nor absolute, most of our kind get to meet their wolves at the age of ten to twelve. Thus, when I failed to save my mother from the invaders; the rogue wolves, I was outcasted. I was considered as a wolfless wolf whose ability to shift was denied for eternity. The pack believed then that my fate was already decided. That I’d grow alone, live alone, die alone. But only until my seventeenth birthday. I met Alice, my wolf, whom I thought did not exist. The rest was history. Now, the question was how was my mother able to tell I was wolfless when I was just five when she was writing these letters? “Then…” My heart contorted. I was staggered. “If Alice was truly my mother’s wolf, what would happen to me?” “Nothing,” said the Alpha, before I heard his footsteps. “Nothing will happen to you, Avaly
Shit. I sat properly upon Alice’s remark. Suddenly, I was all ears. I was hoping it was a lie. But a few moments later, I started to smell his scent. At first it was faint. The same moment, I knew he could also smell me. Which only meant the rejection did not work. But why? The requirements weren’t strict. For as long as both parties wanted it, the rejection would work, so why did it not? Our mate ties was supposed to be cutted! I have Conrad now… I have no need for two mates! I looked over my shoulder to follow the cedar wood smell. I was both agitated and anxious. He said the last time that if the rejection wouldn’t work, he’d do something to me. And I feared that. I still fear him. He was Adler fucking Salvatore. The evilest of all the evil! The two-faced jerk who never think twice about hurting women. He was an ass, and I was sure that he would really do something now that the rejection failed! ‘What do I do, Alice?’ ‘I thought you said you’re never gonna speak to me again.’
